Have you ripped a dvd?

Has anyone here ripped a dvd? (That is, put in on their computer in a different file format, like avi, or mpeg) I'm trying to learn how to do it, and it seems to be a pretty complicated process. If anyone has done it, and is willing to let me pick their brain, or perhaps walk me through the process, I'd really appreciate it.
