I’m of two minds, I tend to enjoy coming of age stories where the romance serves to help the protagonist grow to shipping dramas where writers just put anyone with good chemistry together.
I do enjoy shipping and reading fanfiction with my favorite ships but I prefer that some of my favorite ships are non canon because I think the writers would have ruined them. With that said I love the whole and complete characters outside of the ships that I prefer.
Basically I think shipping should be low stakes fun but not the most important thing about a character/show.

You are undoubtedly right about that, as writers seem to have a compulsion to add DRAMA for the sake of it to relationships because apparently no viewers can cope with a depiction of a healthy and functional relationship.
The problem with assessing how good that relationship would be is that no one has a background at this point. No personal knowledge at all. They seemed fine with each other... for an hour or so.
You want a scary thought? Suppose Warren had been there and caught in the spell. It's likely that he would get along fine with everyone...at least at first.
So I'm not sure we can use that episode as a good example of what relationships might or might not work.
To me most 'ships are kinda to very badly written because they are written to service the viewer's expectations rather than to support the characters and/or plot.
So even excellent writers create boring to assinine 'ships that pander to the ratings gods and we all suffer.
Having said that, there are some 'ships I totally dig because of how they do support characterization and/or plot and (most importantly to me) are pretty realistic. Of course, some of them are just wildly fun (early Xandelia) to watch and those eps always make me smile.
Faith with Angel/us and Wood (this later relationship had potential and I was really sad that they finished Buffy when the did as it had so much more to give in my opinion.

Buffy & Angel - although I do respect Spike's friendship with Buffy I didn't care much for the relationship after SR.
I would say, I'm definitely more realistic in terms of romantic relationships given I was into Mills & Boons many, many years ago as well as authors like Jackie Collins, etc.
And in today's world, I can see and acknowledge the ways that most of the Buffyverse relationships are problem to toxic especially for those who don't like many if not any of them.
I'm just a person who usually will always like and love what I originally did for my own reasons and those that have very strong opinions I can respect but they don't really make me feel any differently.
I look at it as a product of it's time so I just accept it for that knowing that if it was to have been made now, it would be done very different. on terms of the romantic aspect for the lead character in Buffy. It would be interesting to see if there would still be a romantic slayer and vampire relationship or perhaps they would put her with a new and improved Xander?!?

I liked Faith and Angel having a strong friendship, no romantic attachments. You could definitely imagine Faith on season 5 of AtS.
Robin Wood had potential (hee!) with either Faith or Buffy - I think he had chemistry with them both. And it would make sense, the son of a Slayer having a relationship with a Slayer.

Yeah romantically it would have been Angelus with Bad Faith! But otherwise yeah a very strong friendship.
Also yes son of a Slayer with a SLayer does make sense 😀
The best kind of story is one of character development--especially if it's that of teenager to young adult. I have always enjoyed YA romances because of the strong character development element--not to mention the sometimes harsh forces of change which bring those character developments.
This has been the biggest change for me. I used to think "genfic" was boring and movies that were all SFX were ridiculous, but I now enjoy near-future dystopia fiction with very little to no romance, so...big change, there! Of note, there still has to be a traceable plot in anything I read. Another change: I used to be fine reading PWP, but now not so much. I need reasons for the things happening in my reading. (Yes, I'm guilty of writing PWP in my past, I know.)

Other than my change to needing a plot in my reading (see my reply to Kaitkat), I think my main other changes to my ships are I'm not as militant about them and I'm definitely less of a proponent of Spuffy after hearing from the actors about the relationship (the AR didn't help, either, I assure you, but then he went and got his soul, darn it) and less of a Bangel fan after seeing the last two episodes of BtVS and "The Immortal" episode of AtS:S5. Angel just went to immature a**hole for me in those episodes. My Briley shipping dilemma was pretty much solved when Riley returned to Sunnydale with his dull-as-a-doornail girlfriend. He couldn't handle Buffy, and his new relationship made that obvious. As far as Cangel and Kangel, I will always carry a torch for those ships; but all that means in my world is I hope to find journal userpics, fan art, and romantic fanfic about those two ships and will be ecstatic the rare times it's found.

Oh! I forgot to mention my dark side: I wood definitely read some Spriley and some Ensouled Spike/Wood if someone wrote it. Someone wrote an excellent h/c Riley/Spike fic where Riley rescued him from an Auschwitz-esque Initiative and nursed him back to health while he was still weak, and a relationship developed.
Nope, Spuffy & Tillow are set in stones as favorites. Quite a Bangel shipper sometimes too as I feel how much Buffy loved Angel & some pro Bangel posts can make me tear up.
I always loved Cluffy - Clem and Buffy. They had great chemistry together and there was mutual respect when Buffy took the potentials to the demon bar where she got a warm welcome from Clem. This is a romance that should have happened.
Depends what you mean. When I was a teenager I liked Bangel for a little while. I also liked Spuffy for a bit. I kind of let go of both soon after.
However my favorite ships in the past decade + have always been the same. I dig Cangel, Fresley, Woz, Fuffy, and Giles/Jenny. Most of the other ships I respect to a certain extent. I just don't get too excited over them.
Angel and Cordelia were interesting together. I'm not a huge Angel fan, and stopped watching it early on. I'd tune in from time to time. She became a whole different person on that show, which was refreshing, b.c. she was kind of brittle and one note on Buffy. Arrogant sarcastic princess.
