So... after looking around I didn't see a thread about Lawrence King's death on February 12, 2008.

Generally speaking (news coverage and all that), I find it quite disturbing that people would talk so much about Heath Ledger's death... just because he was famous (fair enough he was a good actor but still) and completely ignore the death of a 15 years old boy victim of hate crime (yet again, I know lots of deaths go unoticed, but I guess you can't talk about them all).

So since the story didn't get much coverage, I wanted to do something to help and raise awareness amongst you Buffy people.
You can watch this short cartoon video, it'll take 5 minutes and will tell you moslty what's the story about.

Lawrence King, killed when he was only 15

I couldn't open the link FF, so I did a bit of research because to be honest, I hadn't heard anything about this.

It is a truly terrible thing that happened here. It's so sad that someone so young who was willing to show their true colours cut down before they could really prove the world of what they could have done. And all because he dared to be different.

Ditto on the video not working- malformed video id or something- but this murder was truly awful. I mean the reasons for why he was killed....I mean the murderer is just a, well I can't actually use that language on the board. It's just this sort of thing makes me really, and understanably mad. And he was only in eighth grade too...it's just so awful. And what is even more awful is that what you said was true FF
(yet again, I know lots of deaths go unoticed, but I guess you can't talk about them all).

I mean how awful is it that so many people are being killed that only a few can be covered properly by the news?

well in all fairness to this post I hadnt heard anything and I decided to look it up. It is horrible. But in regards to why his death was qoute unqoute ignored in camparison to Heath Ledger. Is not to say that this kid wasnt important but EVERYONE just about has heard of Heath Ledger this kid was not known world wide so its not world wide media frenzy worthy news. Sorry to say. Like I said it is horrible and I am sure he will be remembered fondly amoung many members of the gay community having been a victim of a hideous hate crime. Its sad. Whats sadder is the whole world wont see it as sad. Some might even say that the kid had it coming which is just wrong, but I guess you cant force the world to care. Just as you cant force the world to accept homosexuals. unfortunately knowing about this kids death wont change the hearts of the world and hate crimes will ALWAYS exist. and that ultimately is the saddest part. that HATE will always exist 🙁

It's a terrible thing.

But I would be full out PISSED if I had to attend a "diversity class". Ugh.

Diversity Training is a complete waste of time. You can't force people to change their minds, and the way most classes are set up, white males are told that they are evil by virtue of being white males and must stop thinking anything at all about anyone who isn't a white male, because it's bound to be evil. Which just makes them mad. It would make me mad, too. (My hubby's in HR training, so he knows what a useless bunch of bull Diversity Training really is.)

I think it's funny how white males are so often made out to be the bad guys that they're starting to become the victim. Most groups aiming for "equality" are really just wanting more power than everyone else. Example: Hardcore feminists.

You're right though, it IS a complete waste of time. And I'm not sure it's all that ethical either because it still comes down to shoving beliefs down someone's throat and trying to change them, which does not work.

This stuff is to hardcore for me, it never processes right. I saw Ellen talk about it on her talk show and it makes me sick any death like this brought to my attention does. I can't believe that in this day and age that people (kids) are still killed cause of who they want to love. That people despise me and my friends so much they the only way to deal with it is to kill us. I have seen with this first hand and I know what its like, I've had a knife held to my throat and been kicked in the gut while being called a fag, the hate I have seen in these people eyes in unchangeable not matter how many laws you change.

bless your heart hun! Be proud to be who you are always! *Hugs*
That's...sick. Screw all those damn haters out there. Just let people be themselves, okay? I know just because I'm cool with gays and lesbians and all that stuff doesn't mean everyone else should be, but I don't understand why some people just can't live with it. In our day and age, it helps to have an open mind. I guess some people are just way too ignorant to see that.

April, that PM I sent you I think I made up lol! I just re-read your post -- you said nothing about what I said you said... *blushes*

Yeah Faith I heard about it on Ellen's show, frakking horrible.

(It's interesting that in topics related to minorities/oppressed groups/etc. someone always feels the need to defend the majority/oppressor/etc. or make sure they're recognised too etc. I'm not saying it's always wrong to do so, it's just interesting that the focus usually turns from "women are oppressed" to "feminists hate men".)
