Heads Up for Canadians: The Boys are Back

I know it seems like forever if you happen to be a Canadian viewer of quality 😉 television, but Trailer Park Boys is coming back tonight.

If you don't have the good luck to be Canadian and you have a vague curiosity concerning what TPB is, it's kind of like Candian Cable's answer to Doctor Who (what a lie). No. Seriously though...it's a television series about a group of pot smoking, dope growing, rum-drinking hosers living in a trailer park, and making a meager living from petty crimes. Believe it or not this is what we Canadians call a comedy. And not to worry there's a movie coming.

It's that time of year again. Ricky, Julian and Bubbles are out of the joint and looking to get wasted. No, it's not another session of Parliament. It's time for season five of Canada's coolest cult comedy, Trailer Park Boys (returning tonight at 10 p.m. on Showcase, Cable 31).

Ten new half-hour episodes are comin'atcha this season (with a big screen feature - produced by Canadian-born Hollywood mogul Ivan Reitman - in the works).

The series, which takes place in fictional Sunnyvale Trailer Park (somewhere near Halifax), was shot this season for the first time on a fake trailer park set. In past seasons, they used an actual trailer park, but that wasn't an option this time as Smith (Bubbles) told Sun Media a few months back. "There's this one guy who owns all the trailer parks (near Halifax) and he's not into it, he's really religious," said Smith.

Then there were all the fans showing up, looking for dope and disrupting the actual tenants (who didn't want to share their dope).

I should hasten to point out. This show is not for all ages. If you're not allowed to watch shows like Sopranos, or The Shield, definitely don't try TPB at home (or anywhere else for that matter)

There isn't really anything too graphic, like there is in the 2 shows mentioned above, and the violence (what little there is of it) is nothing out of the ordinary. The rare gunfight for example is reminiscent of A Team where hundreds of shots are fired, and no one gets hit (except on the odd occasion accidentally). But that's because the boys are bad shots, not because the producers are worried about family values.

The language on Trailer Park Boys, is about as bad as anything you'll hear anywhere, and to call the Moral POV questionable is being charitable. For example one of the characters (Ricky) thinks part of being a good father to his 10 year old daughter, involves getting enough money to afford her cigarettes.

And you know what? Even if you are old enough, it's not for all tastes.
 
Season 4 just came out on dvd. Can't wait to pick it up and watch it. I don't normally watch stuff on tv, but TPB is an exception when I get the chance to catch it.
