I've recently discovered I like those shows about healthy eating and dieting a lot. Anyone else?

It's really entertaining to watch, plus it's very educational. My favourite one is the British show Secret Eaters, in which people who don't have a clue why they can't lose weight are put under surveillance to discover where they go wrong. On top, they do scientific experiments to test why people tend to eat more in certain situations and give you advice on how to avoid those.

Also, do you think those shows are actually helping people live healthier, or just something you forget as soon as you turn the TV off?

There are several weight loss challenge shows I've noticed recently; which I don't find particularly entertaining or informative. Secret Eaters sounds like it would be fairly interesting, in that it would make you more aware of your own mistakes if you were dieting.

I think people have mixed results from being involved on shows like this. Often times they put the weight back on right away because once they aren't being watched by a trainer and camera they have no willpower (or desire) to maintain a healthier lifestyle. I suppose some people who watch the show may become motivated by it to be healthier, but my guess is that isn't the case for most people. IMO, if you want to be healthier, doing a physical activity will help more than being sedentary while watching others learn about health.

In my opinion we all have our own individual body type and there is no such thing as an ideal one. Personally, I believe that if most of what you eat is healthy, and you get some sort of exercise on a regular basis, you're fine. 🙂

Well the shows you mean use a pretty different concept than the ones I was thinking of. You mean stuff like The Biggest Loser, right? Where it's like a competition?

The ones I watch are usually about people who lead unhealthy lifestyles and are made to realize that, not told to lose as much as possible. Like, Secret Eaters is really about pointing out where people go wrong, even if they think they're eating healthily. And another one, Supersize vs. Superskinny has people that are either really obese or tremendously underweight swap diets for some days. And they do give explanations of what certain foods somebody might especially rely on is doing to their body.

That's what I like about these shows. It's not just about slimming down (or putting on weight for the underweight) per se, it's actually more about getting healthy and getting actual advice on how to get there and why you should follow that advice.

Love Secret Eaters 🙂 Such an eye opener show that really makes you think.

I love those episodes where you see people that are genuinely shocked to see how much they really eat when they think they're being healthy. Sometimes they eat 3 times as much as they thought! It makes you wonder about yourself.

Ahh, yes. Sounds like your talking more about shows that teach health vs. weight loss comp.
I used to love watching You Are What You Eat, where they would record what they ate for a week, then be shown it all before changing everything that they ate

I liked that one too, but didn't seem that realistic for the long term. Though those people it seemed needed to take drastic action.
