I was just watching this episode again, and I can't help but ask, "What the hell is wrong with Inara?" I'm referring, of course, to Mal's actions the night before the battle. Granted, there was supposed to be this deep underlying theme of sexual tension between her and the captain, but, really now! She had made such a big deal from the very first about "not servicing any member of this ship's crew" if I remember the quote exactly, while she plied her trade wherever she went, even going so far as to "service" a woman on at least one occasion, but when he takes the completely understandable action of sharing an intimate moment with a willing partner on what might very well be his last night alive, she goes and breaks down and cries like a betrayed lover. Really, now, talk about double standards!

And you know what? It didn't bother me at all. I found that true to life. In real life that's exactly the sort of thing that happens all the time.

Oh the intracies of childhood !
Inara obviously was in love with Mal yet even though she had been trained in the arts of companion-ship, which presumably included being able to communicate feelings and wants.
Mal was obviously in love with Inara, but didn't possess the knowledge or will of saying it.
I think the closest they got, was Mal telling Inara the she puts clouds in his path, and her closest was smiling to him, both at the end of the film Serenity.
River was closer to understanding the complexities of human relationships than they were.

Now if I'd had that sort of knowledge ten years ago, I wouldn't be divorced.

Whedon seems to really like the unrequited love theme, doesn't he? Mal and Inara, Buffy and Spike, Fred and Wesley, Willow and Xander, Buffy and Angel, all either can't be together because of an inability to either express or accept their feelings until too late, and usually when they do, disaster soon follows. Joss just ain't what I'd call a real romantic fella.

Exactly, I feel the same, me and one of my friends were in a similar situation, he was seeing girls all the time etc etc but we had something between us, hidden love type of thing, but as soon as i started seeing someone he gets upset and acts funny round me, so to me inara was very true to life
