Heath Ledger was found dead

Here's where the news is now, close as I can figure.

Hollywood actor Heath Ledger, 28, was found unresponsive Tuesday afternoon in a downtown Manhattan apartment, previously inhabited by actress Mary-Kate Olsen.

"He was found unconscious at the apartment and pronounced dead," a police spokeswoman said.

According to a New York Police Department spokesman, the Australian actor’s sudden death was possibly caused by drugs.

While no details were immediately available, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told The Associated Press that Ledger was booked for a massage at the Manhattan apartment which is believed to be his home. He was found dead in his bed at 3:26 p.m. by his maid who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived.

"Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed," police spokesman Paul Browne was quoted by CNN as saying.

"This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet."

Officials said they believed Olsen, 21, was in California and said it was not clear how long or why Ledger had been in her apartment.

Police said they did not suspect foul play in the death of the actor , who received an Oscar nomination for his role in "Brokeback Mountain" also starring Jake Gyllenhaal, about two cowboys involved in a secret relationship.

"He was just so respected in the industry," said Kim Serafin, senior editor of In Touch Weekly. "It's just horribly tragic. He was just a fine actor and a good person, so this is horribly sad and very unexpected."

Ledger had just finished shooting "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins," in which he will appear as the Joker. His movie credits include "A Knight's Tale," "The Patriot," and "Monster's Ball," in which he played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton.

In September last year, the actor called off his engagement to Michelle Williams, whom he met while on the set of "Brokeback Mountain," although he had previously praised her as his soul mate. The two have a two-year-old daughter together, Matilda.

"Matilda is adorable, and beautifully observant and wise. Michelle and I love her so much. Becoming a father exceeds all my expectations. It's the most remarkable experience I've ever had - it's marvelous," Ledger once said.

i wonder what's gonna happen with the Batman movie. when is it set for release?

That movie is cursed. He is the second person involved in it to die. In the wake of this I don't see it getting released for a long while yet.

He is ??? Who might I ask was the other one...and seeing as you say its cursed I know this may sound morbid but what was the cause of their death. Its gotta be soemthing other than old age to qualify, in my opinion.

I'd say it won't be delayed, but I hope he's good in it. I've always thought he would be, but LOTS of people don't, so if he is bad it will be crappy with people saying bad thigs.

I think he was involved in the stunts somehow...I'm not entirely sure I just remember reading about it a few months ago.

I think Passions was/is cursed, too. Just because two of the people on it died either when their character was supposed to or when their character was supposed to be in a coma. Joshua Ryan Evans (Timmy) and David Bailey (one of the actors who played Alistair Crane who accidently drowned in his bathtub - the actor, I mean).

Whoa, I never made that connection. I feel slightly naive and clueless now....

Really sad. He was great.. it's weird his DVD was looking at me last night. What a waste, he was still really young.

OMG! That's horrible about that guy. It just made me realize that Nicole Kidman could have wound up severely injured or worse a while back when she was doing a car scene in some movie. My aunt sometimes does camera work for movies, so I can't imagine if something happened to her on set.

There was that guy Kevin Smith that played Ares on Xena who died on the set of a movie after falling about six stories. "His injuries were critical and he was put on life-support. He passed away 10 days later in his sleep (imdb)." Now that was a show I absolutely loved, so when that happened it was hard on me as I really liked him.

This really sucks. A friend told me today and I thought they were kidding until I read it on the Internet. For some reason, this shocks me more than any other recent celebrity death. Heath Ledger is one of my favorite actors, I loved him in the TV series "Roar", "10 Things I Hate About You", "The Order", and "A Knight's Tale". I'm looking forward to seeing him in "The Dark Knight".

This is a really sad thing, it seems very unreal for some reason. And it really, really sucks for his family.

oh my goodness i cant believe what i read i just wow... he was an amazing actor and such a cutie... its a shame his life came to such a short end... my heart definatly goes out to his family... 🙁

Well if he deliberately killed himself...selfish b*stard...he has a daughter who will think ill of her daddy. If he killed himself accidentally...stupid b*stard...his daughter lost her stupid daddy...junkies aren't clever or even slightly heroic.

I'm actually rather inclined to agree. It's sad, yes, but families really never do get over either suicide or the devastating effects of drug addiction. I've seen both in my family. For their sakes, I hope it was an accidental overdose rather than suicide. Accidental overdose is much easier to reconcile. Suicide is... well, that's about 100 times more difficult to handle, at least in my experience.

That's good. As good as it can be under the circumstances, I guess. It will make it easier for the family.

This was most likely an accident and it does NOT seem that he was a 'junkie', he had trouble sleeping and it looks like he just overdosed on sleeping pills because they weren't working for him.

Thats the reports I was reading this morning. I was really shocked this morning when I logged on as i've been fan for years. He was one you never saw out drinking and sorts to the late hours. Then again it does not mean he did not have his problems, sometimes those with the biggest problems hide them so well we never know they have them.

At the moment i'm inclined to believe that it was an accidental overdose of sleeping pills. Its one of those things that you will probably never know because you can only really believe a percentage of what is reported in the press. The conflicting reports just go to show that, he was sub letting from Mary Kate, then he wasn't. There were pills scattered around but others confirmed there were none scattered only bottles of prescription pills beside the bed.

He was a talented actor and was (what appeared to be) a loving father.
