Heathers is 30 years old: Is it the Greatest Teen movie ever?

I'd need a definition and then a list to jog my memory before I could pick the greatest teen movie. American Pie springs to mind because it's fun, sunny and has a great sound track.

Unfortunately I've never seen Heather's. Bit before my time, us youngsters struggle to join in with you old timers discussing classic films 😛

Well its back in cinemas from tomorrow so now you have no excuse!😛

Yeah its tricky to define the teen movie. Like I said in another post I guess coming of age movies like Rebel without a Cause or something like West Side Story probably count. So do more indie type films like Donnie Darko, Ghost World and Brick. Then you have the obvious stuff like Clueless, Breakfast Club, Mean Girls etc... You could even throw in some of the teen slasher movies - though I'm so sure about those because they tend to be more about the killer, kills and gags than the teens.

Yeah its tricky to define the teen movie.
Teen film is a film genre targeted at teenagers and young adults in which the plot is based upon the special interests of teenagers and young adults, such as coming of age, attempting to fit in, peer pressure, first love, rebellion, conflict with parents, teen angst or alienation.

As well as the classic teen film, which is similar to a romantic comedy, there are hybrid genres, including:

Back to the Future is listed on one site. If that counts then we have a winner.

I wouldn't even think to consider that a teen movie. But maybe some people do. I just think it's a movie with a teen protagonist.
Not for me. The first one more than the other two. Because you also have the teen drama of Marty's future parents. But the main focus is still the Sci-Fi plot.

The main focus on Attack the Block is the sci-fi plot but it would still be considered a teen movie.

But that's another grey error. I'm not sure the main focus is the Sci-Fi plot. I think that is just used as a metaphor. I know the director has said he was inspired to make the film having been rubbed and then meeting the teens who robbed him. So I think he was very much interested in understanding their world.

Metaphor is not plot. Symbolism is not plot. The main focus of a movie is the plot. You cannot say the plot of a movie is it's metaphor. The plot of a movie is it's plot. Attack the Block was a sci-fi plot ergo Attack the Block is a sci-fi movie. If, as you say, the main focus ie the plot of Back to the Future is sci-fi but then say Attack the Block it's not... that seems a little contradictory to me.

I'd take Spring Breakers over Jawbreaker

Just got back from seeing it on the big screen and it was mind blowing!🙂 It's lost none of its style or edge and holds up just as well today. The dark comedy was perfectly pitched between the two extremes and it truly has some of the sharpest lines you are likely to hear. Easily one of Ryder's best performances too. Again its a bit call to say best teen movie ever. But I'd say top ten easily😎
