(The only thing I really liked Ben Afleck in was Hollywoodland' where he was excellent)

I had no intention of going to see this film after MoS but now I might check it out. Why is it so bad? Is it so bad? Will it be a sleeper cult hit that will flop and then be celebrated in years to come?

...I'm so mean, but really I'm not a fan of comic book movies. If this flops then they might stop making so damn many.
 
A "surefire" comic book movie is getting universally panned? GREAT! Maybe the moviemakers will stop pandering to the lowest common denominator and start thinking about what people would actually want to see. Hollywood makes about 250 movies a year out of the 20,000 screenplays a year that it gets. Maybe they should start reading other types of scripts. BTW the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail both gave it a low rating, so I doubt it will do that well here. As for cult status, I don't think it will stand with Repo Man, Fight Club... or Serenity.
 
I think people are raging over it due to Man of Steel and their pretty much 'hatred' of that. The fact that BvS is not an 'action' movie like Marvel is what turned a lot of people off, in my opinion.

I don't think BvS was ever "surefire", other than it'd make tons of money. It was never going to actually be critically good. Because Zack Snyder is about as divisive as a director you could get that isn't called Michael Bay. (he also directed Watchmen, hence the irony!)

I'm the first to admit, I'm not a DC fan. I'm a Marvel girl through and through. Sure, the MCU has had its issues, and some near miss flops. I had issues with Age of Ultron, Ant-Man and Iron Man 2. I'll never admit that everything they put out is perfect and without flaw (except Thor, it's a masterpiece of modern cinema), but as soon as DC announced it was fast-tracking its DCEU, I knew they were making a mistake. They wanted to emulate Marvel's success by taking its two key players, each successful with their own movie franchises and bring them together on the big screen, and they wanted to do it fast, with very little planning and execution, unlike Marvel who spent years building up their key players.

I'm not one of these Marvel fans who pass judgement on movies I've never seen. I liked Nolan's Batman trilogy. I liked the original Christoper Reeve Superman (still seeing it today makes me feel like that amazed kid seeing a man fly through the air for the first time). But to be honest, it's never interested me seeing Batman and Superman duke it out. Because one's a human with loads of money and gadgets and one's an immortal alien with superhuman strength and powers. And I really disliked Man of Steel. I don't think it was a good film.

Saying all this, DC has done two things absolutely spot on and much better than Marvel. Firstly, they announced Wonder Woman headlining her own movie, when Marvel has been putting off a female-led movie with Black Widow and late in the game with Captain Marvel. I hope it's not too little, too late in that regard. They should have just given Scarlett Johansson a BW movie, instead of claiming the fans would never want it. I know plenty of fans who would. In addition I'm super excited for Suicide Squad, because it looks like a risk. The sort of risk that Marvel Studios (and their owners Disney) would never take. If the DCEU is willing to take risks on their material, they will bounce back from any negativity surrounding the critical panning of BvS.
 
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I have every intention of doing so within the next few days or next week at the latest. It was never on my "Gotta be there for the first showing," list, any more than "Man Of Steel" was. Henry Cavill is not my idea of Superman, and I didn't really like what they did to the character in that movie, so I have known all along that this wouldn't be on my all time favorites list. Still, these are the heroes that I grew up with back in the '50's and '60's, and it's a loyalty thing with me.
 
I'll definitely watch this movie but I was never in a rush and not like the reviews made me change that. I don't mind spoilers so I know what happens in the movie. Since I can't go on personal opinion I'll just go with what I've heard. Sure the Rotten tomatoes score is unbelievably low but I've never paid attention to their scores before. Swedish reviews, which I'm not say are better or worse, got an average rating of 3,4/5. From the reviews I've read and watched Affleck gets a lot of praise and many are calling him the best movie Batman ever. Not bad. The script is being bashed, many doesn't like the way they portrait Lex and the editing seems to be bad. Wonder woman mostly get praised. Not sure if that's because Gal Gadot does a great job or just surpasses peoples low expectations of her.

Expectations is what I think this movies suffers most from. It doesn't live up to the hype. And had it done that it had been one of the best movies ever. Even in "bad" reviews they talk about it being an entertaining movie with some great moments. So in the end it depends on if the good outweighs the bad or the other way around. To many, not loving the movie seems to the be same as hating it which most often isn't the case.

edit: Even reviewers thinking the movie is bad says they're looking forward to the coming DC movies and I'm sure the movie will do good money even if not as good as they hoped. So I don't think it'll cause the studios to make fewer superhero movies. At most they'll change director of the Justice league movie. But since they're supposed to start filming that within the month I doubt that'll happen.
 
I haven't seen it and I don't think I'll watch Batman v Superman, but I read that Ben Affleck is great in it. He shouldn't feel bad. Zack Snyder's films always get mixed reviews.

To be fair to Ben a lot of reviews by fanboys/girls and 'proper' reviewers are saying that he's one of the best things in it. That' his Batman is pretty darn good. If the movie is bad then its not on him, its on the (very divisive) director and Jesse Eisenberg's scenery chewing.

It seems to me, sifting through the tons of reviews, that whatever you thought when you saw the trailer that's what you'll think of the movie.
If you thought the trailer was bad, JE would be the worst Lex Luthor in cinema history, WW and Aquaman are just shoe-horned in there for a lazy JLA movie to follow, then this film isn't going to change your mind.

Again, I think Ben is one of the ones who can come out and say 'I had a good role in a movie many disliked/hated.'
 
Even with lackluster reviews, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice proved as indestructible as the Man of Steel himself: Zack Snyder’s epic battle between Batman and Superman just opened to an estimated $170.1 million domestically, setting multiple box office records both stateside and internationally.

If weekend estimates hold, Batman v Superman will beat Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 ($169.2 million) to become the sixth-biggest domestic opening in box office history — and the biggest Warner Bros. opening of all time.

Plus, not only did Batman v Superman shatter The Hunger Games’ $152.5 million record for the best March opening of all time, but it also set the all-time best record for a pre-summer opening. It also surpassed Furious 7’s $147.2 million to earn the biggest Easter weekend opening ever. (Batman v Superman also set an IMAX Easter record, earning $18 million to beat Furious 7’s $13.3 million.)

While Marvel still holds third, fourth, and fifth place on the list of biggest openings, thanks to The Avengers, Age of Ultron, and Iron Man 3, Batman v Superman did set a DC Comics record, surpassing both The Dark Knight Rises ($160.9 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million).

And Batman v Superman didn’t just break domestic records. Internationally, it pulled in an estimated $254 million for a global total of $424 million. That makes it the fourth-biggest worldwide opening of all time — ahead of any Marvel movie.

So what’s next? Batman v Superman only earned a B CinemaScore and critics’ reviews have been largely negative, but there isn’t much competition hitting theaters in April — so expect Batman v Superman to stay at the top of the charts for a while.

I never thought that this film was going to flop- not with Superman and Batman in the same movie. That was never going to happen imo.

But sucking? Being a critical and artistic mess as a film? That was a distinct possibility.
 
From the trailer, I am not all that happy at the portrayal of Lex Luthor.

But Faith saw it, and said Affleck is the best Batman yet.

I have a feeling, if you're one of those people who like the Christopher Nolan films, you won't like this, and vice versa.
 
As more time goes on it seems Ben Affleck winning an Oscar so early in his career was a curse. I think he's a good actor, but he's in a lot of crappy movies.

He's been doing pretty well as a director though - I highly recommend Argo. Not seen the others he's directed, but heard good things. I don't think he's done too badly overall, yeah he's done some duff movies in the past but some of his more recent acting gigs I've seen (Argo, Gone Girl) has been brilliant.
