Just for the simple reason that she is the main character. I have a few casual Buffy fans and she is their favorite as well. But I can assure you I am not a casual fan. I am quite crazed 🙂
 
I LOVE Buffy. Yes, my favorite character is Spike, but Buffy is right after him, because of the reasons you said. She's such a deep character and she's the one who makes the show, not only because she's the lead. I know what you mean by lame. Not that I feel it's lame, but sometimes I too feel that people misjudge Buffy and often hate her. I find myself angry at her a lot, but overall, I love her to death.
