Hello everyone, I haven't been on a Buffy Board for years, mostly because I didn't think there would be one that was still be active. I sat down to write an introduction for myself but got caught up in this long-winded maniacal gush that follows. I thought, well this is getting way too long to post, but I'm enjoying it, so I'll just continued writing for my own enjoyment. But then, this morning, I thought what the heck so"¦ (I hope this isn't so large that it is a strain on resources /breaks a rule)
My first memories of BtVS were the movie trailers on TV. I was a senior in college, newly married and living in a little apartment on what we called Skid Row in a coal town in WV. I was immediately enamored by the title of the movie. What kind of madness is this? It has to be the coolest idea in the history of storytelling. I didn't realize it at the time but I now believe the name tweaked my undiscovered passions for anything underdog, most importantly, Women. I mean I love the horror genre, the cheesier the better. And I love to laugh, and who doesn't like a pretty girl. But, as Joss says, "Those who can't get past the title aren't invited to the party." I was ready to party, just not so much with the movie.
Because of the movie experience, I didn't watch the series when it first aired. Barely knew it existed. I remember seeing flashes of S1 while changing channels and thinking it reminded me of the Xena type shows. But when it hit syndication in 2001 I decided to give it a chance. Two episodes a day, 5 days a week, couldn't wait to get home from work to watch. The Scoobies graduated Sunnydale High in an instant. I remember being disappointing in Xander and Willow for cheating, and thinking Buffy sure complained a lot but I couldn't wait for the new season to air.
As I believe a lot of fans were, I was somewhat disappointed in S4, and I didn't even watch Angel.. (Good Grief). And during S5 when Xander left Anya at the alter in Hells Bells, I quit watching anything but S1-S3 that I had acquired on DVD.
Well, a couple years later I got sick. Not deathly sick, but sick enough to be out of work for a month or so. I knew I'd be pretty much bedridden and Netflix was there, so, why not watch the rest? That is when I discovered the worst thing about watching Buffy as it aired on TV was, watching it, "as it aired" on TV. I just lost continuity when I had to wait a week between episodes, and in those days, having to watch it at a certain time, on a certain day, just didn't work for me. I still don't watch series that way. I just live in a one year behind, perpetual world of night by night serials. And as soon as I finished Buffy I watched all of Angel.
And, I've never stopped watching. I usually go through the series a couple times a year, but my patterns are sporadic. I often pause after S7 before starting over. (As if starting over in some way was to deny the existence of everything our heroes had endured.) And I usually take my time through the wonderful Sunnydale High seasons, but I have never completely stopped repeating Episodes 1 "“ 144 of Buffy. And I can't imagine that I ever will. I rarely watch episodes out of order, I mean I watch Halloween and Fear Itself, All the Way, on Halloween, and I watch Amends on Christmas but rarely, other than that.
Except for my personal Thanksgiving Day Marathon. The most wonderful day of the year. 🙂 I rock my Buffy tees and my Buffy sticker on my pickup truck. My friends think I'm crazy and I guess I am a bit. But Buffy, (the show of course, not SMG, don't you hate that? When you tell someone you love the show and they say, oh yeah, She's really hot.. arrrgh not that she isn't or I don't love her work"¦ but I digress) I used to quote jokes from the show, when appropriate for the conversation and people would usually laugh like crazy... until I would tell them it was [insert character] in [season# ep#] when"¦.. Then they would just look at me like I had Lobsters crawling out of my ears. Now I just let them laugh. "If you can't get past the title, you aren't invited to the party."
But Buffy, to me, is my fortress of solitude, A place I can always go to escape.
To a fantastic world beyond imagination. Where our hero is surrounded with friends - most with their own super powers -- Together they face overblown, grand conflicts
against an assortment of monsters"¦. {Paraphrase from 6.10 Normal Again}
So that's my origin story. I'm looking forward to coorisponding.

Love your 'stream of consciousness' intro. 🙂

I think you'll find lots of similar hardcore fans here.
You'll find people who love particular seasons, characters, or 'ships- and all have their own stories about they became involved with the magic that is Buffy. 🙂

Enjoy!

Wow, your intro. I loved all of it. 🙂

So, have you read the comics yet? Just another way to extend the craziness! 😉
Have you ventured into any other Joss Whedon shows?

Hello!
Love the intro. You've found a good home here - we all share your love!
I like to watch all 7 seasons of Buffy & all 5 seasons of Angel once a year, but if I don't I always watch the Halloween episodes on Halloween & the Christmas episodes on Christmas. We don't have Thanksgiving in New Zealand but I love Pangs so I do my own Thanksgiving with that.
Look forward to seeing you about the boards!

Sorry, gone so long. blah blah
Ok, Some of todays favorite episodes in something losely serving as an order.

Family - cry and laugh at the last two scenes everytime. I think that's something that I like the most about the show. Joss has a way of turning a good cry into tearful laughter. Don't waste tears, recycle, reuse.

Dopplegangland - Ok, funny, right?

Prophecy Girl - Buffy does the right thing, She doesn't always want to, but she usually does. Country music, the music of pain.

Never Kill a Boy on the First Date - This episode, widely unappreciated for it's rampant campiness is definative Buffy to to me. An animated study of one of the main themes of the series. Buffy's duelaity. Buffy the teenage girl (I mean, Lord, her name is Buffy) and Buffy the Chosen One.) Which one will she choose? The thematic answer, Neither/Both. Bufffy doesn't dress for work!

Bad Girls - Faith, Buffy, more Faith, a morbidly obese demon. Faith drawing a staked heart on the Chemistry class window (symbol for the unavoidable pain of love?) More Faith.

A New Man - It's another "bestest buffy birthday bash ever". And hillarious. When Giles the Fereral (sp) demon chases Maggie Walsh... BlaHaHa

Becoming P1 & 2 - Let's cry, cry, cry. [Now Leaving Sunnydale]

I like The Real Me, I like Dawn, ok, I said it. And Harmony has minions!

And I've watched Welcome to the HellMouth so much I can pretty much recite it.
I love how the Scoobie just come right in. Family is important.

And ALL the one's that everyone likes. WMWF, Hush, Chosen, etc...

I'm sure y'all have discussed this a jillion times but I'd love to hear some of yours (fave eps and ideas)

I love all of your choices!
I agree with most of you're selections- love Bad Girls/Faith in general, like Dawn and The Real Me, Buffy's birthdays are always worth watching. 🙂

I love 'The Wish' and think Doppelgangerland is a nice follow up.

Generally I think S1 is underrated, nice to see another fan of it. 🙂

Family and the duality of Buffy are pretty much the main themes of the series, right up until the last episode- its what makes Buffy herself such a great character.

Other favourites: Passion, 'IOHEFY' Becoming 1&2 (of course...) Faith, Hope and Tricks, Band Candy, Revelations, Enemies, Graduation Day 1&2, Fear Itself, 'Pangs', 'This Year's Girl/Who Are You', lots of S5 eps (including 'Family'), 'Tabula Rasa', 'CWDP' 'Dirty Girls' 'End Of Days/Chosen'

I'm right there with you TheTopher.
I can't believe I left out Faith, Hope and Trick.. That is an iconic episode for me.

Welcome! And I hear ya, I too have watched "Welcome to the hellmouth" so many times I can more or less recite it 😀
