Help a Buffy lit newbie out?

First of all I hope this is in the right place. I've yet to delve into the work of Buffy novels of the literary or graphic variety, but now after my most recent rewatch I find myself wanting more. Thing is I'm a bit overwhelmed. I have absolutely no comic book experience and have no idea where to start so I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction. Any recommendations as to where one should start? Any must reads I should be aware of? Best place to get them would be helpful too (I'm thinking Amazon at the moment)!

I really like the crossover books. And I've heard the gatekeeper trilogy is very good too. I bought all my books from amazon or eBay 🙂

I'm going through something similar. I'm finishing up a re-watch of Buffy and Angel right now, and I was finding that I wanted more as the series was going on. I started picking up the Buffy novels, and for the most part they're really, really good. Some of the ones which are just teleplays of the episodes aren't great, but the original novels are pretty strong.

Anything by Nancy Holder or Christopher Golden are awesome. I'm just starting the Gatekeeper Trilogy and I've heard really good things. "Child of the Hunt" was really good, really detailed. She really gets the characters. I get most of the books through eBay, to tell you the truth. I'm a total Amazon guy, but I find that for old books they don't have the greatest selection. You can usually find Buffy book lots on eBay for great prices though (that's what I've been doing).

I'm waiting until I finish Angel S5 before I start on the comics, but I just picked up the first deluxe volume of Buffy S8 through Amazon, and regardless of how good the comics are, the book itself is just gorgeous. There's a very similar one for the Angel: After the Fall comic, which runs side-by-side with Buffy S8, which I picked up as well. It's an incredible looking book as well. The Buffy one only cost about $24 dollars as well.

It's depends what you are after really, if you want something canon-like which kinda ties in with the series or something before before the series began or something fanon-like. There is also books that concentrate more on one character or ones that are about the whole group. Personally I really like the Book of Fours

Ah, thank you all for the responses! They're so helpful and exactly what I needed. I think I'm just gonna get one or two of the most recommended books to see how I like it at first. Same with the comics, although I may be tempted to get them all just based on how pretty they're supposed to be. 😛 I'll probably be back here to rant or rave once I've started one.

My copy of Fray turned in the post a few days ago. I have only flipped through it so far but the artwork is stunning.

Personally, I chose to not read anything that is non-canonical (except Fan Ficiton). I find it confuses me.

Read Season 8 and what's yet out of 9. That way, you'll be in the know and you can partake in discussions with us 😉

Angel After the fall actually goes on before Buffy season 8, so I would read that first. And while you're at it, the kind-of-canon series Spike After the fall might as well be read after Angel After the fall if you like that series.

Yeah I plan on reading the books when I have finished my watch through. Gonna read the Kindle ones first most probably then buy a few on Ebay 🙂
