Help - Email syntax?

Can anyone tell me if it has a meaning when someone signs their emails with their name and then an asterix? Like,

Blah blah blah.

Buffy*

?

I tend to be very out of it at such things so I was just wondering if that's a code I'm missing lol - thanks!
 
Don't know myself but I can't help but think "Where's OLD MASTER 2.0 when you need him?" 🙂 It's a shame he's away for a while...
 
As usual, I have a theory. (I like to warn people it's one of my theories, so they can have the option of not reading any further. 😀)

Isn't the * a boolean search query thingee. I think it means something like "there may be more attached to this name". For example if you were using the search term survey* you would get results for other words like - surveying, surveyor, surveyable.

If you were to apply that to email, Buffy* could also mean something like BuffytheSlayer@Don'tspammyemail.com.

Hey, I just noticed something. When you write the whole email address it creates an email link. Perhaps adding the * in place of the @ stuff is a way of avoiding that, but at the same time acknowledging the existence of more information.

No, that can't be it. It isn't possible to use wildcards on any SMTP server i know, besides * is a valid character in *nix usernames, and like half the internet runs their SMTP servers on *nix boxes.
 
I was thinking something more like a symbol without any actual function, that says, yes there is more information, but I don't want to present it here.

Or how about this? The person might have some reason for believing his particular email software will allow him to complete an email address with a wildcard *, but he/she is incorrect.
 
Well I'm talking about like in the text of a message - it is from someone that I know. Like if I wrote you an email that said this:

Yo n4h - what's up?
