I can't say I'm surprised. As much as I love Firefly and Serenity, something like this was never going to work. The harder Nathan and the fans worked to raise the money, the harder the network was going to hold onto the rights. FOX already said they weren't interested in selling, and we all know how pig-headed and stupid FOX can be. If they knew people were working to bring the show back with in their own way, no way would they have let it go.

I guess we'll just have to make do with re-runs.
 
As I understand it, Nathan was never actually serious about trying to raise the money or get the rights. The fact is, media companies just don't sell off properties unless they are in bankruptcy and forced to do so. Fox and Universal are both still making money off licensed products tied to Firefly and Serenity. Both the TV show and movie DVD's are solid sellers, as are the Serenity comics licensed to Dark Horse.

There was never any chance the rights were going to be bought by anybody. Whatever value this campaign had was in reminding Fox and Universal that there's still a passionate fan base out here that would really like to see another movie. (Reviving the TV series would be virtually impossible at this point.)

The holy grail would be to get another movie, but that's only going to happen if and when a studio decides to make it. It would take at least 60 or 70 million dollars to make a movie today with similar production values to the first one.

The first movie wasn't a blockbuster, but it has made a profit, and any movie that makes a profit is a candidate for a sequel. Once The Avengers movie comes out and Joss has a blockbuster attached to his name, he will have a lot more pull (at least temporarily) when it comes to getting pet projects greenlit. I'm hoping one of those projects will be Serenity 2.

There's a reason the Serenity comics haven't pushed the story much beyond the end of the movie, except for the reveal in "Float Out" that Zoe is pregnant with Wash's baby. Joss has been saving that story for a reason.
 
I'm not surprised either. But I can't believe people actually donated money to this. It's ridiculous. Also, like Andrew Crossett said, I knew Nathan wasn't completely 100% serious. No way Fox would give up or sell the rights anyways.
 
I'm not surprised either. This was amusing at first, but it's almost a little ridiculous how far it went. I think I heard something about how they even started encouraging people to donate actual money instead of just pledging? I dunno, but it's weird and smells a little scam-y. Nathan Fillion was on The Nerdist podcast after this whole thing blew up, and he sounded really bewildered about everything when he was talking about it.

All I'm surprised about is how long it took for this to die a death.

I would love more Firefly as much as any Whedon fan but it will never go back to series. Too many factors are going against it. If fans want to focus their efforts on getting more live action Firefly story then they should concentrate on Serenity 2. That at least is still possible, however unlikely.

Right, and those people probably aren't going to end up getting their money back either. :\

I posted about this in the original thread about the organization opening. Some of my friends were actually stupid enough to donate to a separate deal thingy, which claimed to be the "sister site" of "Help Nathan Buy Firefly". One of my friends sent $500. You have no idea how hard I punched him. He tried contacting them about getting the money back, and it's a no go. What an idiot.

Oh my God... Why the hell would anyone donate that kind of money to something like this?! Wow... Same with the Beatles shoes, some people have more money than they have sense.
 
I'm surprised people thought the money was a good idea... I mean the large fan following saying "haha let's help Nathan by Firefly" you know, as a joke and kind of like "oh well we can dream" would have been great. But the money...

Yeah I'm pretty curious about that, myself. I tried to convince myself that it's possible that site would donate that money to a good cause, but the pessimist in me keeps screaming "SCAMMY MCSCAMMERSON!"
