I can sum it up quickly:
Seasons 1-3 made me laugh more, but 4-7 made me FEEL more. 4-7 are deeper emotionally, and you begin to love or hate certain characters with a bit more passion.
I could not disagree more on certain aspects of this comment.
Watch season 2 again. Emotionally this season is highly charged and I dare you to say it is bettered in this sense by any other season. It is equalled, especially in season 5 and 6(no details as boreanaz has yet to see it).
The humour is also pretty strong in the later seasons.
As for the love or hate certain characters - well again, I can't help but disagree, slightly.
Characters like Spike, I did increase my liking for as he was only a constant in season 2 until 4 but on the whole the scoobies had had enough time to allow me to make a fully formed impression on me.
I mean over time a character must progress otherwise you lose interest but I think this doesn't aid the 'love/hate' thing. This, to me, is more of a gutteral thing. You form your impression almost instantly and stick to it unless a character does something insanely stupid(writing issues) that makes you think 'Why the f*** do you think she doesn't love you and this causes you to get sucked by a vamp?'(no guesses as to who that is!!! - what a pointless character he became and what the heck did they think they were doing with that!!!).
The show simply couldn't keep going with the "go to school, something whacky happens at school, the scooby gang figures out what's wrong and buffy fixes it". People would have started to grow tired I think (well maybe not the people on this forum, but regular people would have :lmao🙂, so Joss did the smart thing and began to deepen the emotional pool of the characters, making them deal with loss, experimental love etc.
I agree that he made the right choice to continue the growth of the characters and had it stayed in school it would have become stagnant but I still have to disagree with the emotional pool. Your comment suggests that it was only post Season 3 that Joss(and Co) started to grow the characters emotionally, this is not the case. The characters growth begins right back at the beginning and the writers actually do a good job in creating effective emotionally deep characters that gave us a brilliant 3D image of them.
Even Cordelia, who was the only 2D character for most of season 1 gets the emotional upgrade by the end of that season with 'Out of Mind, Out of Sight'.
Some people simply don't like to watch characters they've grown to love crash emotionally or evolve into something darker than they were in the beginning. It doesn't mean the episodes are worse, it just means the viewer is shallower than the rest of us :hehe:. Watch them for yourself. You can pick up the original discs pretty cheap these days online, and then you'll have them forever, whenever you feel like watching them.

I don't understand why people wouldn't love an ever evoling character and relationships. In fact, in that case the person shouldn't be watching TV shows based around one group of people.
