I think I've got a pretty good knack for guessing whats gonna happen on BTVS, I've been right with nearly every prediction. So, heres my theory on the finale.

Buffy is fighting the Hellmouth's spirit right? Well, HM spirit dies, HM dies? If the Hellmouth dies, Buffy no longer has any reason to linger in Sunnydale besides her friends, but we know her calling overpowers her need for friends. So, the finale ends with her leaving the peaceful Sunnydale, to journey forth to parts unknown and continue slaying baddies all over the world.

And, of course, Sunnydale would still have its occasional monsters, and whoever starts slaying (I'm betting its Willow or Dawn that'll be the new lead, Willow is more likely because of her fan following), keeps Sunnydale safe. I also think we'd see Buffy come back now and then for a cameo.

Thats my view on it.

Sorry, but no thanks it's ... way too easy, just fight, slay, happy ... nothing special, besides the Hellmouth is one of the things to worry about, you're forgetting the First!

Nooo the hellmouth shouldnt die, that would remove the whole purpose of Buffy and why everything has been centered to Sunnydale since the first slayer came...The slayer lineage has always protected Sunnydale from the hellmouth and hopefully they wont stray from that 🙂 A little change is ok but not a rapid one.

Umm... every slayer has protected Sunnydale? Afraid not. For some examples, theres the slayer that was in the Boxer Rebellion that Spike killed, Faith who fought down in Florida I believe, and Buffy herself who didn't move to Sunnydale before ridding her school of the nest of vampires. The Hellmouth is only one of the many evils in the world for the Slayer to battle, so if she shuts down the Hellmouth, she'd finally be able to move on to other issues.

true one was in Shanghai and one in New Yorks subways 😛 But Giles spoke of something confusing once that said that a slayers job was to protect the hellmouth or something, maybe just her times hellmouth when it had opened.

Still it would SUCK if it died.

That is a good theory but the way I see it, the Hellmouth has always represented metaphorically the everyday problems we have to face everyday. They never go away, no matter how hard we try to avoid them, problems spring up all the time. We can't get rid of problems in our lives hence the Hellmouth can't die. But that's just my view. Your theory has possibilities.

Maybe the Hellmouth moves every now and again, maybe this century it's in Sunnydale maybe next time it'll be in australia? ... but sure there are also other things in this world that need to be defeated, because they pose a thread to mankind ... and wether it's a slayer stopping the hellmouth and the champions stopping the rest or vica versa doesn't really matter!

Speculations, idle and impassioned

So Perigon and I both approach the one hundred per cent mark in our predictions--nearly a hundred percent of my predictions are wrong. That's something I appreciate about BtVS; I can think of no other TV show or fiction of any kind that's so consistently surprising, and this is a show that doesn't sacrifice its storyline for a petty shocker.

That said, I want to make a few of my own (doomed) predictions.

1) This is the show's last season 🙁 . There are just too many signs of closure and completion. Leaving aside such logistics as the slipping ratings and expiring contracts, we've seen cameos by all of Buffy's nemeses from prior seasons; the story has come full circle and deposited us in high school again; and (I believe) the current villain's henchman, the ubervamp, is designed to resemble the creature on the Mutant Enemy logo--the one that says "Grrr! Argh!" I take all of these as authorial indications of leavetaking, as a breathless look back at the brilliance of these years.

2) Buffy won't die; Faith is going to die. The bloodline will continue to one of the youngsters (not Dawn), and whoever it is, her Watcher will be either Willow or--Spike. I remember Willow saying at one point, a long time ago now, that she'd considered becoming a Watcher, and in the episode called "Restless," Spike (in a dream) announces that he's been training to become a Watcher. The same dream has Anya telling Xander that she's going to return to being a vengeance demon, Tara telling Buffy something about Dawn (who didn't exist yet), some creepy foreshadowing of Joyce's death, and a lot of other prophetic material.

3) Since (I expect) the show isn't going to continue, the new slayer and her watcher will frequently recur on Angel for a season, while Joss and the other Mutant Enemy producers check to see if the characters have the right chemistry for a spin-off of their own.

4) Sarah Michelle Gellar will probably try to pursue her film career, earning more kudos for her positively Shakespearean delivery of lines such as "EEEK!" while a masked killer stabs her (Scream, I Know What You Did...) or wasting her flawless comic delivery in witless roles where she plays second banana to a cgi dog. Hollywood is so unaccustomed to anyone being remotely talented that no one seems to know what to do with talent when they find it.

However,
🙄 , this works out well for us; once or twice a year (I think) she'll make gladiatorial entrances onto the set of Angel and the other potential spinoff.

Something does need to change if Buffy is to pass her Slayer mantle over to a young 'un; but I don't have a clue what that will be.

____

William Butler Yeats quickly earned a reputation as a profound and joyous poet of youth; but over the years something remarkable happened: he became a great poet of age. BtVS has been an extraordinary exploration of youth, and I for one would like to grow old with these characters. I number them among my tribe--Buffy, Xander, Willow. Would Joss & crew be able to explore the human questions of advancing years with the same genius and insight they used to inquire into the challenges and ignominy of growing up? We may never know. I do have to say, though, that even if Buffy only returns once or twice a year to the other show(s), it will thrill me to no end; I want to keep on seeing her grow.

Are you sure it was Willow mentioning that she wanted to be a watcher? Because I remember in the dream you were talking about, Xander saw Spike swinging on a swing with Giles pushing him, and Spike said Giles was teaching him to be a watcher. Then Xander said, "Ya, I usto be into that."

Maybe Xander will be the new watcher? I do agree about Faith dieing, and the line continuing. And of course, the watchers council is destroyed, that leaves Giles to go rebuild it (Probably somthing they'll leave for Ripper, or just hint at near the end of the show.)

As for Angel, I don't see a lot of cross-over potential there... even after Buffy has ended. I really suspect Buffy to continue, with a different name and minus Sarah Michelle and the Buffy character.

I remember reading somewhere (I can't remember where) Joss was at one time talking about ending the series with Buffy taking a journey to Hell.

This would make a kind of sense.

Buffy can kind of be seen as what passes today as an epic hero(ine).

If my memory is correct, it's a tradition for the life journey of an epic hero to end shortly after a trip to Hell. I believe epics like the Odyssey, the Aenid, and the story of Gilgamesh follow this format.

Following the "journey to Hell" format could create some interesting possibilities. For instance Buffy could come back from Hell, her life journey now mythologically (a la Joseph Campbell) complete. At this point she could make a conscious decision to hang up her slayer power by passing it on; either to another person, or to be stored in something like a jewel.

From here it would be possible to re-energize the series sometime in the future.

She actually isnt a slayer anymore 😉 She just has the strength, wheather people like it or not Faith is the slayer at the moment and she has the gift that surpasses to another when she dies.

Buffys already surpassed when she died in S1!

PS: Perigon you play Everquest??

No, I despise Everquest 😛

I've played all the major MMORPGs (UO, EQ, AC, AO, DAoC...etc), but Everquest was my least favorite, so thats why I use it as the butt of many-a-joke.

Lol why do you despise it? 😛
Despite to the endless competition of uber guilds, the exp grinding of neverending hours? 😀

Anyways no more offtopic 😉

True, Buffy is not technically the Slayer anymore. Nevertheless I don't get the feeling her strength is something she just has. If it was you could just clone another Buffy.

My feeling is Slayer Strength is a spriritual thing you have to be connected to, in order to draw from, to create physical strength. Buffy still seems to be connected to it. This is why when she is fighting Demon-Anya and getting her butt kicked all over the floor she still knows she can draw on the strength to defeat Anya anytime she wants. That was why she apologized to Anya in advance of stabbing her.

It's a moot arguement for the purposes of this discussion anyway. Even if Buffy's strength is only a biological freak, it's still enough to kick Faith's ass, isn't it? All I'm saying is this strength (or power) could be passed on.

Actually I think Faith could if she really wanted kick Buffys ass, lately Buffy has become too...Whats the word? When you believe youre on top of the world and best of the best? And Faith has been in prison getting stronger, yet psychologically damaged 😀

I think that all slayers are connected to a power, and that power is the Hellmouth. If the hellmouth should close, the slayers power would disappear.

One more EQ thingy.

I don't like EQ because!

1. Terrible, terrible graphics...
2. Bad skill/lvl system
3. Bad PVP
4. NO ROLE-PLAYING!

And thats why I hate EQ 🙂

I think people are trying to put too much emphasis on the Hellmouth's connection to the slayer... the way I see it, the Hellmouth is just one evil of many. Buffy just happens to be there because it was the easiest place for the council to place her when she was moving (By setting up a new job that would draw her mother to Sunnydale).

Hellmouth closes, Buffy moves on to fight the other evils of the world.

Anyway, we all have our opinons. We'll just have to see what happens 🙂

That an interesting opinion... What do you base it on?

I assume Faith really wanted to kick Buffy's ass the last time they had that all-out, to the death, cat-scrap. Didn't work that time.

Who knows, we might get a chance to see the rematch when Faith returns. Until that time though, Buffy is the reigning champ.

Just the fact that all slayers seem to be attracted to the hellmouth and for as long as its been open there has been a slayer. Everything evil obviously isnt because of the hellmouth but still.

Like Kendra, Faith etc they were all drawn to Sunnydale for some reason, why? Hellmouth maybe? Buffy has always returned to Sunnydale even if she tries to escape life.

There have been post slayers that werent found there but there is no evidence saying they werent slayers because of the hellmouth 😉

there is no evidence saying they werent slayers because of the hellmouth

Yeah, but is that sound logic? Can you say a thing is, because it can't be proven it is not?

It sounds kind of like saying "Aliens exist, because you can't prove they don't"

Sorry I need more support for the "slayers need the Hellmouth" theory before I add it to my understanding of the Buffyverse.

I've been thinking about the Jail-toughened Faith theory too. I'm not sure jail does make good fighters better. It didn't help Mike Tyson.
