HERO: THE SERIES
1 INT. MIKE'S BEDROOM - MORNING
The camera slowly moves in from a corner of the room until two people are in view. They're both lying in bed, sleeping comfortably. The woman is clearly older than the boy, three years to be exact. She has a gorgeous face with flowing brunette hair and a body like a model. The boy, a 17-year-old brunette, is lying next to her. It seems odd that a 20-year-old would be spending her evenings with a minor. The older woman wakes up and stretches in bed. The camera pans over to the clock and zooms in to reveal that it's 8:00 a.m. She rolls her eyes and groans out loud. Pulling the covers off the bed ad wrapping them around her body, the woman leaves the teenager lying in the bed in his pajama pants. She inadvertently wakes him up and she walks into his closet and searches for a change of clothes.
MONICA
Where are my clothes?
As the woman searches the closet for her clothes, the boy sits up in bed and scans the room with his eyes.
MIKE
Monica? Are you still here?
MONICA (O.S.)
Why the Hell didn't you wake me up?
MIKE
And still my question remains. Where are you?
MONICA (O.S.)
I'm in your closet! Where the Hell did I leave my clothes and why didn't you wake me up?
MIKE
Ok. This isn't the best way to start off my birthday, but whatever. Speaking of which, are you gunna wish me happy birthday?
Monica walked out of his closet, incredibly pissed. She's fully dressed in a work outfit. She tosses the covers back on the bed and crosses her arms over her chest.
MONICA
I'm not wishing you anything! You know what, Mike? You really need to start getting your priorities in order! I have mine in order and because of you; I'm late for work! Why did you have to not set the alarm clock?
MIKE
It's my birthday. I don't want to get up at the ass crack of dawn. I don't need to be living like an adult yet.
MONICA
Then maybe you shouldn't be with me.
MIKE
What's that supposed to mean?
MONICA
I'm older than you and now it's really beginning to take its toll on the relationship. Today serves as an example. A child and an adult are not meant to be together.
MIKE
You're three years older, not thirty.
MONICA
See, you can't even have a intelligent conversation with me!
MIKE
I'm just trying to prove my point, ok! [he pauses] You know what? Get out.
MONICA
What?
MIKE
Get out, now. If you can't even show me a little bit of respect on my birthday than you're not worth my time at all. Take your crap and get out.
MONICA
Fine!
Monica hurried around the room, grabbing her things. She walked to the door and looked back into the room expecting Mike to be chasing after her, begging her to stay. Instead, Mike had settled back in bed and was resting his eyes. Monica let out a frustrated cry and left Mike's room and then the house. He could tell by the sound of the door slamming that she was gone. He heard her car drive off and just when he thought all was done; he heard something at his window.
MIKE
What now?
Mike sighed and rose from his bed. He trudged over to the window and peered out. He didn't see anything. Just as he was pulling his head in, a familiar face popped up and scared him. He fell back into his room and onto the floor. Daria climbed inside his room. Daria looked down at him and smiled.
DARIA
Happy Birthday, Boo!
MIKE
How many times do I have to tell you not to call me Boo?
Daria helped Mike off the floor and dusted him off. He walked into the closet and pulled on a shirt so that he would look decent in front of his friend.
DARIA
So, I heard your little fight with the whore. It's about time you kicked her ass to the curb. She's crazy.
MIKE
I think I'm the crazy one for staying with her for so long.
DARIA
It's not your fault. It's not your fault you were born with a penis and attracted to older women.
MIKE
That's not the point I was trying to make, but whatever. We were together for 16 months. It's a shame the relationship ended. [he pauses] I'm not doing a good job at being sad am I?
DARIA
Not even close.
MIKE
Well, damn, she was the one who turned mega-***** on my birthday.
DARIA
The offer to kick her ass still stands. I'd actually have fun pulling everyone of those perfect hairs from her head.
MIKE
Eh. Don't even go there. There's nothing about her that's perfect, nothing at all.
Another sound echoed from the window. This time it was sound of laughter. Mike walked to the window and looked down. His two other friends, Stephanie and Nick, were trying to get up the house while carrying a birthday cake.
MIKE
You need help with that, guys?
NICK
I got it.
MIKE
Are you sure? The roof's a little slippery and you might drop"”
The sound of something soft hitting the roof can be heard. Mike looks out the window and looks at the cake splattered all over the roof as his friends squeal in laughter.
MIKE
My cake! No! That's the second cake I've lost this year! First Jan ate one and now you dropped the other!
STEPHANIE
Good. I'm glad we dropped it. I didn't want you seeing the top of the cake anyway.
MIKE
Why? What did you do to it? Did you take a bite and try to cover it up for something?
STEPHANIE
No. I tried to spell out "˜Happy Birthday, Mike' on the top of the cake but the little icing dispenser crapped out on me and the letters came out ****ed up.
MIKE
It's the thought that counts.
Nick and Stephanie climbed in through the window and wiped themselves free of anything that stuck to them while they scaled the house and entered his room.
NICK
Hey. Happy birthday. I brought cards. Where do you want me to put them?
MIKE
Just leave them on my desk.
NICK
Ok. Oh! No one smokes in your house, right?
MIKE
No one smokes in my house. I wouldn't allow anyone here to have those cancer sticks on them. You should have seen what I did to my parent's cigarettes when they started smoking.
DARIA
He gave them to me.
MIKE
Actually, I shopped them up with knives and left them floating in the sink"¦and I gave them to Daria. What did you do with them anyway?
DARIA

STEPHANIE
Moving on! You have any food in this place? Nick and I skipped breakfast because we were getting your damn cake ready.
MIKE
Ah! Food! Yes. Helen and Gary are probably downstairs making me pancakes. You're all invited to have breakfast with me this morning.
STEPHANIE
Oh I feel so special.
2 INT. MIKE'S KITCHEN - MORNING
Helen and Gary, Mike's favorite aunt and uncle, are in the kitchen. Helen is busily running around the kitchen trying to have breakfast prepared before Mike woke up. Gary was working on a project of his own, one that he needed some herbs for.
HELEN
I still think that this isn't right.
GARY
Why not?
HELEN
I don't feel right giving him this"¦dose.
GARY
It's not like we're giving him LSD or some date rape drug. We're just giving him something that makes him stronger and helps him grow quicker.
HELEN
What would be so bad about letting him get to that level on his own?
GARY
It took his parents 40 years to get to that level and they"¦
HELEN
Let's not go there...
GARY
Well, you see why I'm beginning to dose him.
HELEN
How do we know that accelerating him to that level won't get him killed quicker?
GARY
We don't, Helen, but it's a risk we're going to have to take. And, when he gets strong enough he can contact his parents. It would work out better for him in the long run.
HELEN
He's still just a teenager. He's only 17-years-old today and I think we're rushing him into something he's not ready for.
GARY
What makes you think he's not ready?
HELEN
He's still just a boy. I see this unstoppable smile on his face everyday. He craves life. He finds something humorous in every situation and nothing seems to bring him down. I feel that forcing him into these situations will put a damper on his happiness.
GARY
You want to know how I see it?
HELEN
Of course.
GARY
As a parent, you want to do everything in your power to see that your children are prepared for the world they have to face when they get out there on their own. Let's say that Reid and Missy were in his position. Would you want me to sit back and let them face a new confusing Hell on their own?
HELEN
I don't know. I just don't know. I understand the desire to want to protect and prepare your kids, but there's a difference between preparing and forcing him to do something. I'm his Aunt. He is my nephew. He's my blood relative. He may call you Uncle Gary, but you're just related by a friendly bond. Different people have raised us both and we've grown up to be different people. We both clearly have different opinions, so what I'm going to ask you now is for more time to talk about our"”
Daria, Nick, Mike and Stephanie walked down the stairs. Their footsteps down the hall alerted the two adults to the oncoming arrival of the four teens. Gary dropped the assortment of herbs into the bowl of batter Helen would be using for the pancakes. The teens entered the room and Mike smiled brightly at Gary and Helen.
MIKE
Morning!
GARY/HELEN
Morning"¦
MIKE
How's my favorite person doing today?
HELEN
I'm doing fine. Thank you for asking.
GARY
Hey! What about me? How come she's your favorite person?
MIKE
She makes me pancakes every other day and you don't. I don't know how messed up my life would be without my normal pancake consumption rate.
GARY
I'll buy you a car"¦
Mike ran over and put his arm around Gary.
MIKE
Uncle Gary! How's my favorite person doing today?
HELEN
Traitor"¦
The three other kids came inside the kitchen and watched the little family gathering. They took seats around the table and sat down, not wanting to butt in. Daria saw the moment of silence and thought it would be an appropriate time to say something.
DARIA
Hey, Aunty H.
HELEN
Hey Boo! How ya doing?
MIKE
This is so not right. You call me Boo and my aunt calls you Boo. I can't escape!
NICK
That's just a name you call someone you like. Don't worry about it.
STEPHANIE
Then why don't you call him Boo?
NICK
Because that would just be wrong. Men aren't supposed to call each other names like honey and sweetie. It would come off wrong and subtract from our manly points.
DARIA
Going back to the points system I see?
HELEN
The points system as in how you rate a girl?
GARY
There are many points systems in the guy world, Helen. God, you should know that!
HELEN
Well excuse me! Why don't you explain to me this point system if you're so intelligent?
GARY
Well, it's a system that involves points and"¦
HELEN
And you don't know what you're talking about! Who wants pancakes?
She took a cup full of batter and poured it onto the hot pan. The batter sizzled as it began to cook.
MIKE
I do!
GARY
Don't change the subject just because I'm having trouble keeping a train of thought.
HELEN
I'm sorry that you're getting old. I'm just trying to spare you the trouble of making an ass out of yourselves in front of the young ones.
STEPHANIE
You two should get married.
GARY
Hello? I'm married with two kids.
HELEN
And hello, not interested.
MIKE
And hello, hungry and will be late for school if we don't get this eating show on the road!
HELEN
Yes. Pancakes. Almost ready.
GARY
So, what are you and Monica doing tonight?
MIKE
Monica won't be a factor in my life anymore. We had a disagreement today and I had enough. I told her to get out of my room and out of my life.
DARIA
I volunteered to kick her ass.
HELEN
Good, I'm glad you guys are over. No offence, but I didn't like you dating an older woman like that. You should stick to people in your age group.
MIKE
I can't help that I'm so damn sexy. Women are naturally attracted to me. Nick's jealous of my charm. I know he is.
NICK
I don't need any witty charm. I've been dating Jessica for a little over a year now.
STEPHANIE
How sweet! It's nice to see a man devoted to his woman.
Helen scooped the first batch of pancakes off of the pan and shoveled them onto a plate. She held the plate out in front of her and looked over the other people in the kitchen.
HELEN
Who wants the first serving?
GARY
Birthday boy gets them.
MIKE
How very cliché of you.
NICK
Do you even know what cliché means?
MIKE
It's some word that's like"¦never mind"¦
STEPHANIE
Just eat the damn pancakes.
MIKE
Ok. Ok. Fine.
Mike took the plate from Helen and put it on the counter in front of him. He put butter and syrup on them and then took a bite. Gary and Helen looked at each other nervously. Suddenly, Mike dropped his fork and his eyes closed. He saw:
A woman sitting a tree. A man practicing his fencing. A colonial child playing ball. A soldier fighting in World War II. A man and woman laughing together inside their home. He saw himself.
His senses were flooded with new life. He was barely able to control his feeling as his senses flew out of control. Everything seemed new as something was happening deep inside him. He felt a strong head ache painfully pulsing in his head. The next instant, his eyes flew open. They didn't stay open for long, however; he fainted seconds later. Collapsing on the ground, his friends ran over to him to check if he was ok.
GARY
It has begun"¦
