Hero...Why, Joss Whedon?

This episode was excellent, the 1st one that made me cry.

But I'm so pissed that Doyle was killed off, the character was AWESOME. Never seen "Angel" before now and told my sister not to "spoil" anything for me.


She heard me yelling at the tv, immediatley knew which episode I was watching.


She told me that the actor also died in real life, back in 2002.




Very sad...RIP
 
It was very sad, made me cry lots.
Also, I'm pretty sure they killed him off because they were pissed at him for being a drug addict? (I may be entirely wrong)

Anyway, I recently started watching Angel, but I already knew what was going to happen in this eppy. I'm not sure exactly what I did, but I remember most of the episode as being watched from under a blanket.
 
Yeah, my friend Arinna is watching Angel for the first time, and she called me freaking out last night, "DOYLE DIED! WHY!? ". I was like, Yeah...I saw that coming 🙂 Doyle was a great character. Too bad he couldn't have stayed on the Team for the long haul.
 
Doyle's death was quite heroic and well played by the actor.


still a shame though, such a great character.
 
This episode destroys me every single time. Especially as my heart is already shattered into a million pieces by I Will I Remember You.

I watched it again a few weeks ago, the first time I'd seen it since Glenn Quinn died and it made all the more bitter 🙁
 
Doyle was my favorite Angel character. When he died I was SO pissed off...imagine how different the show would have been if he'd stayed...
 
I also loved the Doyle character. I remember watching Hero and crying all weekend!! i've never had tv effect me like that before. R.I.P.
 
I only started watching Buffy and Angel a couple years ago, not even that long. Spoilers everywhere. I would read about things, just for trivia or what not, and come across a lot of spoilers--very irritating, and I stopped very quickly. Joyce's death, Spike's fate at the Buffy finale, evil Willow, Tara, etc.

Doyle's death was one of the only BIG things that I didn't accidentally spoil for myself, and it took quite a toll, about as much as anything else on Buffy or Angel anyways. He was such a great character, had absolutely no time to truly develop.... I mean, I'm glad we got Wesley and all, but I really would liked to have seen what the show would have been like had Doyle stuck around.

I never heard that they fired him due to drug problems though. I read something about how Joss felt Doyle and Angel were too similar. Well, maybe not similar but I can't remember the word. Two broody demons who are sort of humany, so they got rid of Doyle. I also heard that Joss said that as long as they were writing Doyle out of the show, they'd give him a hero's exit since they really loved the character.
 
Doyle was so sweet, they shouldn't of killed him off.

so sad, and shocking for the show.

I heard that too and that Doyle was only written for the first half of season 1, like it had been planned from the beginning. I see it being the only way and Cordy was always going to inherit the visions so she could grow as a character.
 
Didn't Joss Whedon said once that he wanted Jesse in the credits so that everyone is shocked when he dies? But because it would've been too expensive he couldn't do that. He mentioned that he did it later in Angel and everyone got really angry. Was he talking about Doyle?

No, because Doyle was in ten or eleven episodes... I'm pretty sure he was referring to when he put Amber Benson in the episode for "Villains" and then killed her off.
 
Could be, but he said he did it in Angel and he said it in the comments of buffy season one. did they even start with the sixth season then?

I had heard that too, and that's actually what I assumed to be the reason that Doyle was killed off. I had heard that Joss wanted to do the same with Jesse, but obviously as BtVS was a new show and they only had a half-season to work with I don't think that he had the time or funding to keep Jesse on long enough for fans to grow attatched. So when Doyle left the show out of the blue, that's what I assumed Joss finally got to do.

I could be very wrong though, I also agree that it gave Cordelia's character more of a purpose and way to grow (learning to deal with the visions, and all). Maybe it was part of the plan all along, or maybe there were some issues with the actor that we never were told about. I guess Joss and his staff are the only ones that could ever know for sure
