Inspired by a comment made by [MENTION=11428]Dagenspear[/MENTION], I am curious to know what fictional characters you have grown up admiring and what about them you admired. OR do you feel fictional characters are not admirable or role-model material?

Since I read my first Mars book by Edgar Rice Burroughs, my ultimate hero has always been John Carter, the Warlord of Barsoom. He is the epitome of the Southern gentleman, the model of the ultimate hero, and the man who never hesitates to stand for what is right and to defend the weak and helpless, no matter what the odds or the potential consequences of his actions. His simple motto, "I still live," tells anyone who cares to listen that, as long as there is life, there is hope, and as long as there is hope, the true hero will always stand against what is wrong and defend what is right.

I adore a good southern gentleman.
Well to be obvious I always admired Buffy a lot. Because I felt she was strong and struggled admirably against the troubles in her life. And she had this beautiful support system in her friends.
Literary heroes I had many, I was always a big reader
Heathcliff "Wuthering Heights", for his resilience and the fact that he was rather deeply misunderstood
Captain Nemo "20 000 leagues under the sea" , because he was mysterious but strangely alluring
Carmel from "The Black Opal", can't remember the book much anymore I just remember being very touched by it as a child
In the same spirit there, though I can't remember the book much, I remember loving Sarah Crewe from "A little princess" and I read it over and over 🙂
and Esther from "The Bell Jar", though I suppose she wasn't really a hero. I just felt a certain kinship with her that I still feel.
almost forgot Rose Red from "Snow white and Rose red" (Perrault's version is nice, but as a child my grandmother read me the Grimm version so that's the one I'm going with)

my fictional heroes are mostly from books i read as a child. they're more people i relate to rather than look up to.

Aside from Buffy, I always admired Jonathan Kent from "Smallville". I loved how Johnathan Snyder portrayed the famous father, and his scenes with Tom Welling's Clark always moved me. When I watched them together, I forgot the show was based off a fictional superhero and got lost in the real emotions of a father/son relationship.

Buffy and Spike are the two biggest. I admire the two of them so much. I'm rewatching Brothers and Sisters and I'm constantly just in awe of Nora Walker. She's such an incredible woman.

I pretty much look at characters that are given strong moral dilemmas and eventually make good decisions. I like to use them as role models for my own life. So yeah, there's a lot more, but those are the main ones at the moment. 😀
