...and, wouldn't you just know it, I'M ONE OF THE BAD GUYS!!!

I just found this

White Avenger (Character) - Comic Vine

and I was wondering if anyone else here had known about the existence of this character before. I had never heard of him (my user name came from an old D&D character that I created back in the '60's) and I just thought that it was a weird coincidence.

I was a big D&D geek back in late 1999 (2nd edition, played Planescape and also Forgotten Realms that veered off into Zakhara, Kara-Tur, and Spelljammer) to the early 2000s (3.5 edition, and I kept up with it to 4rth edition and then dropped it), and find the history of it interesting. So if you don't mind, share of this White Avenger character as I'm curious! (First guess is that your White Avenger is like a "white hat" paladin, assuming they had paladins in the game when you played, otherwise maybe a Lawful fighter avenging villages from monsters and evil doers.)

I know very little of 1st edition and what came before, though I did enjoy reading some of the old material for the Mystara campaign (which I think was cancelled by the time of 2nd edition and even predates 1st edition). That "Hollow World" of Mystara was brilliant in design, and changed my mind that the early D&D was just a bunch of dice rolling over endless fights with almost no story or character development (other than power level) like some shoot 'em up video game. I don't know about anyone else, but even though I haven't played in years (nor bought any of the novels, though I've thought about it), I'd be curious to hear of your character.

As for the comic character....I have an EXTREMELY vague memory of hearing of a character that MIGHT have been the White Avenger. I've only tried a few Marvel and DC superhero comics and don't recall anything like that in what I read.

I wonder if it was a short run, similar to the Very Special Episode comics like when Spiderman does a "Say No to Drugs" or even talks about what to do if some guy tries to sexually molest you (my memory here is vague and I THINK I heard the Nostalgia Critic on YouTube talking about it, but I'm not at all sure), all of which were brief arcs quickly forgotten or ignored in the ongoing series. If that's the case then it would explain why you never heard of the character and I can't say if I have or not (and even if I did I couldn't say anything significant about him). Otherwise, it probably means readers found the story line not to their liking and it was dropped as a business decision.

Okay. First off, it was a character that I created for the computer game "Wizardry," which was actually a sort of D&D knockoff.I only got to play the actual game once with some friends.

The White Avenger is an Elf warrior named Talan, who is the sole survivor of a group of elves known as the "Efren," They are unique among all other elves in that their blood could be used to transform lead into gold and temper steel weapons to phenomenal strength and sharpness (Excalibur, Cortana, Frostfire, and other such legendary blades were dipped in Efren blood)

A sect of sorcerers known as the Alchemists slaughtered all of Talan's people in order to get their blood. The White Avenger wears all white clothing and armor and weapons tempered with his own blood, and his sworn mission is to track down and destroy every last Alchemist.

(So, that's the back story of the original White Avenger. Whadda you think?)

@white avenger

I never heard of that game.

My impression is that you CHOSE this character (possibly with minor modifications you were allowed) that was offered to you rather than created for scratch (correct me if I'm wrong). It also sounds like "white avenger" is what, in D&D terms, would be called a "character class" (or possibly "character kit" or "prestige class" in 2nd and 3.5 editions respectively) rather than a nickname (like say "Zorro" or "Lone Ranger"), though people might call you that just as some Star Wars character refer to Obi-Wan as "Master Jedi" rather than by his birth name.

All I can say is that it sounds really remarkable that you played this game ONCE (I presume in one sitting rather than a campaign composed of "many episodes") and "kept the name" so to speak. While many (including myself) remember their characters fondly, it takes time for those characters to grow on us. The idea of playing a character once and it leaving a powerful impression on you is as amazing to me as if someone saw the Buffy episode School Hard without seeing any other Buffy or Angel episodes and yet choosing "Spike" as a board name decades later.

But thanks for sharing. 🙂

Well, as I said, the White Avenger was a character totally of my own creation. In "Wizardry," you could basically create the player however you chose to, within the limits of the story line, with as much, or as little detail as you cared to include. (This was a game played on an old Apple 2E, long before Macintosh, Lenovo, or laptops, and not even the kind of internet that we enjoy today) I'm sure that the people who I actually played D&D with that one time indulged me quite a bit (I had, by that time written a couple of short stories for a Creative Writing class about the character that several of them had read, and, I hope, enjoyed.) They were the ones who invited me and my wife to play that single time, after which the class ended, and we all went our separate ways. Rather than actually go into all of that backstory, I have generally just referred to Talan as my D&D character. Sorry if I misled you.

Demogorgon? (If you were never a D&D geek then don't worry about it if you don't get the reference about the 2-headed figurine. I have no idea if Demogorgon is still a major demon lord in 4rth and 5th edition. Do recognize Stranger Things.
