Hi, I'm Matt-Dave but I go by RagnarockerBunny online. I've been told that I'm insufferably opinionated and my explanations can be exceptionally long-winded. While I did catch a couple of Buffy reruns in my teens, I never much connected with the show, even though I might be one of the five people who actually liked the BtVS movie. Buffy was just a little bit before my time. Here's a short list of vampire related things I watched before BtVS and it might give you a bit of insight as to why I never could bring myself to give the show a chance (or until recently, that is):
-The Vampire Diaries and its spinoff The Originals
-True Blood
-11. Goddamn. Seasons. Of Supernatural. No. More. Please.
-Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate
-the Underworld movies
-the Blade trilogy
-30 Days Of Night
-Bloodrayne (only the mediocre film adaptation, anyway)
-Magister Negi Magi Negima (both the anime and manga)
-Not vampire-related, but Firefly.
-Also not vampire-related, but Smallville, and part of the reason I watched Buffy, in the end, was because I was like, yeah, friggin James Marsters, he was Brainiac.

What convinced me in the end? I somehow ended up on the Angel Wiki and read all the spoilers about Angel and Darla, and that intrigued me enough from a narrative perspective but I think Buffy's B-movie aesthetic still kept me away. After that, I heard both the Angel and Buffy theme songs and they were so darn catchy, but I still couldn't bring myself over. Still hesitant, I finally saw "What's Wrong With The Buffy HD" featuring The Passion of the Nerd's Ian and his smooth voice, as well as his Buffy and Angel guides, got me to watch the show. And as with many newcomers, I had to be handheld through the first two seasons of Buffy. I nearly dropped the show at many points but that guide got me through far enough to the point where I didn't need anymore handholding.

After all that, I can safely say I am a fan of the show. The good outweighs the bad and while I can't say Buffy is my favourite show, it's a good time and I immediately began recognizing the influences that other shows I've watched took from BtVS. I'm joining because I think I've exhausted the patience my friends have for me ranting about a show that debuted 1997.

I have come to exhaust yours.

Welcome to the boards. As @Fool for Buffy says, ranting is what we do. It's funny because I am having some of the opposite effect where I grew up on Buffy (and Angel) and hold them on this pedestal and when I and try and watch things like The Vampire Diaries or True Blood or (gasp) Twilight, I'm kinda like yeah... but Buffy was better haha. I wonder if it is just a product of when we watched and what we grew up on? Anyway hope to hear more from you on those things you liked or things you struggled with. Angel/Darla dynamic is a personal favorite of mine as well. So incredibly intriguing and complex relationship. Look forward to seeing you around the boards!

Hi and welcome to the boards, hope you have fun here 😀 Do you have a favourite character, season or episode?
 
Hmm... Buffy, obvee, but I love Cordelia and Doyle (oh, my sweet, sweet Doyle... It will always be too soon). Just Cordi's arc from being the archetypical mean girl to becoming this fierce working-class woman who takes no nonsense was a helluva enjoyable piece of character growth. Favourite romantic relationship? Pre-season 6 Willow and Tara. A lot of it mirrored my experience coming out as bi (and though I understand this is a show that debuted in 1997, I mean, come on, she's clearly bi! I get the queer landscape at the time had a bigger fear of the part-time lesbians and gay-for-a-day's but still! And there wasn't even any real talk about the concept of fluid sexuality and How I Met Your Mother got that part right with Alyson Hannigan! But queer rant over)

My favourite episode has to be Anne, although I'm basic AF and I'll admit Hush is one of the episodes I found absolutely brilliant. Once More With Feeling is also fantastic but I think it goes on just a little bit too long, especially the final number where Buffy drops the big reveal to the Scoobies. Season five was to me the most watchable, I found myself consuming it almost entirely in one sitting. Glory was just such a compelling villain, and it was Frank from How To Get Away With Murder as Ben and that's a face I could stare at for days. The Buffy bot annoyed me a bit and Dawn, oh Dawn. How unfortunate it is that you were such an afterthought. I eventually warmed up to Dawn, but I'll admit that it took me a week of fuming to forgive Joss for such a blatant and misleading retcon. Perhaps if a lot of the conflict surrounding her wasn't so artificial and based on outdated teen stereotypes, I'd have warmed up to her sooner. And besides those issues, I can still say I loved season 5, which I think just speaks to the strengths of the show at that point.

And honestly, the movie is an underrated gem; it's just misguided. I mean, how funky is your chicken?! 😀

OH MY GODD I CRY LAUGHING EACH TIME, although when I was in 8th grade the seniors had to come up with the warcries we chanted at Rugby games, and as a highschool junior it was compulsory for us to attend. Maybe it depends where you were but every year the seniors always had some bizzare chant they picked up from God knows where. Like, to me this scene isn't as cringey as other people find it because at my school we had "Sliding down a bannister, landing on a cactus, WE THINK YOUR TEAM NEEDS SOME PRACTICE" and man, that's engraved into my soul at this point.

Unsure of the state of my chicken, but my goose, however, remains unabashedly loose.
 
Welcome to the boards, I kinda totally love the Buffy movie, too, though I have a hard time remembering what I watched first, the movie or the show. Both are awesome, in very different ways 😀

Welcome to the boards! You will find an entire spectrum of opinions here, so there will usually be someone to agree with you and someone whose alternative view makes you think, so I think you will have a good time here. And congrats on joining Sineya, the house of heroes.

Hola! Fellow True Blood fan here. Although it kind of spiraled after season 4. However, season 1 was excellent. Only watched a couple episodes of Supernatural. Couldn't get into it. Have you ever seen Being Human (UK)? It's excellent. Only seen parts of Vampire Diaries. As a rule I generally avoid anything on the CW. 😵 Are you a Stranger Things fan? What other non-vampire shows/movies do you like?

I've never actually seen Being Human, either UK or NA but after a bit of research, knowing that the NA Vampire character is played by Mark Pellegrino, AKA actual Satan from Supernatural makes me want to watch both. Also it's a real shame about avoiding CW shows because those are some of my favourite. It’s what I watched all through highschool and I still watch a lot of those shows now. Riverdale, the Originals, Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow, The Vampire Diaries, Smallville, Supernatural... I mean, CW shows can be a little too teen drama for their own good but teen drama is campy and it’s a form of camp that I like.

Stranger Things was something I wanted to watch but it just never hooked me. I sat through one and a half episodes and I couldn't be bothered to sit through anymore. Of course had a friend told me earlier about the demon shadow god monsters that show up in later in the story I might have been more willing to stick it out, but as a 90s baby with more fondness for the early 2000s than secondhand 80s nostalgia, Stranger Things couldn’t really use it’s one big thing on me.

And I guess besides the aforementioned CW shows, I love Bojack Horseman, Fox’s Empire, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, The Defenders (but Iron Fist can go find a rectum to crawl into), Brooklyn 99, How I Met Your Mother, iZombie, Gotham, Orange Is The New Black, Game Of Thrones, Orphan Black, Lucifer, Emerald City (oh, rest in peace), Misfits, Doctor Who, American Horror Story, Glee, Teen Wolf… But that’s strictly in the realm of serialized television. There’s also a lot of 90s and early 2000s anime (Namely Negima, Gundam, Neon Genesis, Cowboy Bebop, .hack, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, Fushigi Yuu, Btooom!, Bakuman), and also some of the big Shonen ones, namely Bleach and Naruto. I’m going to include The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra in there because this is my list and you know what? I say they count.

My all time favourite right now though is Steven Universe. Just… It’s too freaking sweet for words. Sure it’s a cartoon about alien lesbian rocks solving slice of life problems through song but Rebecca Sugar basically made something catering entirely to my taste. Between all the chipetune and jazz songs (OH MY GOD THE MUSIC IS GOOD), and Estelle voicing Garnet, and just the sweetest little character moments I can describe... Yeah, it's definitely my favourite.

I am not up to date with the originals but I agree, it doesnt get enough love. I'm not as keen on TVD, too much soppy crap.

I will be a SPN fan til the end, whenever that may come! (Hopefully not soon, its fun!)
