Hello, everybody!

After lurking for a little while, I'm writing my first post on the Buffy Boards to introduce myself and explain how I came to be a fan of BTVS.

For years, I had heard about Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I'd often say to myself, though, "It's hugely popular, so it can't be very good!" (Yeah, I know. What a terrible reason to dismiss something! Then again, I'm used to having unusual taste and so I was (incorrectly) sure that whatever "the masses" liked was not for me. Little did I know that BTVS was an atypical show whose fans were not any ordinary "masses".) Also, I wasn't quite old enough to watch the show in its heyday, though I did see the opening theme for Angel once and asked a friend about it, who explained to me that it was a show about a "good vampire".

Personally, I had always found evil characters and bad guys attractive. The idea of vampires was very interesting to me, even at a young age. I remember reading a children's vampire book once and being intrigued by its storyline. (I also recently read most of Anne Rice's "Interview", but the last third of it bored me for some reason and so I never finished.)

A few years after I had seen a bit of Angel on TV, "Twilight" was everywhere. I tried to read it, but after getting two or three pages into the book, I found myself physically repulsed by the writing quality (I'm a writer myself) and could not continue. I watched the first two films, though, and their only redeeming qualities (in my opinion) were the lighting and the existence of Jacob Black. I thought Bella was boring, insipid, and helpless; and sparkly vampires who were decidedly un-evil disgusted me.

Enter BTVS. While on YouTube some months ago, I noticed a Buffy-related video in the sidebar. I'm pretty sure it was Spike-centric, because I remember seeing an extremely sexy, bottle-blonde man and clicking on the video for fun. "Wow, he is SO late '90s and early 2000s!" I thought. That was OK, though, since such was the era during which I came of age, and so the costuming and fashion seemed nostalgic and fun rather than "dated". Over the next several weeks, I found myself viewing dozens of BTVS clips on YouTube, especially those that focused on Spike, who I had quickly found myself infatuated with. I then began to snoop around Buffy Boards and other websites, talking to friends who were BTVS fans, and generally figuring out why I was so interested in a show that has been off the air for a decade.

In July or August, I purchased the first two seasons of the show on DVD. "If I like the beginnings, I'll watch the rest," I said...

I was HOOKED! I'm quickly making my way through the series and am now in the second half of Season 5. Spike is still my favorite character on the show, and I am quite obsessed with him at the moment. (Spuffy are wonderful, but I personally think he was just too good for her!) My other favorite characters are Faith, Xander, Angelus, Joyce, Giles, and Tara. I dislike Buffy a lot of the time, though I admire her character deeply. And I strongly dislike Riley, Jenny, Darla, and Angel. My opinions might change over time...For instance, my dislike of Angel lessened after I saw him fight with Riley! I have not watched Angel yet; some people tell me I'll like it and others tell me I won't.

All I can say is that something about this show speaks deeply to me. It is intelligent, funny, scary, and beautiful; and many of its lessons have applied to me personally. So, while I'm certainly a latecomer, I'm an authentic one. (I've even written some BTVS-inspired poetry, though I'm pretty sure it's better than William the Bloody's poems were.) My other loves are music (particularly the Grateful Dead), reading, helping my students think deeply (I'm a teacher), and nature. (I've looked into the Buffy comics a bit, but I honestly can't stand them.)

...I wasn't intending to write such a long first post! I'm sorry if it was a lot to go through. Anyway, I'm glad to be here and I hope to be able to discuss the show some more in the future!

P.S. My username is an acronym. You'll probably understand it immediately.

Welcome to BB! Just like you I'm a latecomer to the show. I just started watching it a few months ago and just like you, after the first few episodes I was hooked. Now I find most of my free time devoted to watching the show, I'm spending money on merchandise and I come here often. I love Buffy. I've always been an SMG fan but never had the chance to watch the show because again like you, I was too young when it first came out to really be into it. I was into sports and my parents were weird with what I watched.

But I'm so glad I was able to start watching it. I now own all of the DVD's and I just started season 4 last night. I just finished the episode where Kathy, Buffy's college roommate, is revealed as a demon lol. LOOOOOVE the show.

Anyways after my rambling, welcome!

Welcome to the boards! Have you ever used Buffy in your classes to your students, michigan girl?

Thanks for the warm welcome, people!

To answer your question: Yes. My older students know I'm a fan, but unless it's relevant to classroom discussions, I won't bring it up. My younger students don't know about my love of BTVS. (I teach two different age groups in two different schools.)

Oh, and I forgot to mention this: My favorite thing about BTVS is that, in addition to being a show about self-growth and battling one's "demons" in life, it is also about morality. To me, moral ambiguity is the central theme of BTVS. It's one of the reasons I so love the villains on the show, and in particular am comfortable with the moral complexity of Spike (and Faith, and the Mayor, and other "bad" characters). Even the bad guys are good sometimes, and vice versa. That's just the way real life is, too, so I enjoy seeing it (albeit more dramatically) on a TV show.

Welcome to BB OFAWB! Cool username 🙂 Even if you weren't a big Angel fan on BTVS there is still a good chance you'll really enjoy him in his own series.

I think I'll check out Angel when I'm done with BTVS. Glad someone "gets" my username. One of my favorite Spike lines! 😉

Hello there!! I'm always happy to see new members on the board, especially when they love discussing the show (which seems to be the case here 😛).

Spike is also one of my favorite, but for a different reason I believe. I just find his character very complex, he's a very dark character. Wait till you see s6 and s7, there's a lot of twist and turns with his character and you'll learn to both love and hate him.

You'll notice that there's also a bit of a war in between Spike and Angel's shippers. I'm sure you'll enjoy getting into that 😛

Anyhow, I'm sure you'll love posting around here, you'll meet plenty of awesome people who enjoy the show just as much.

An definetly watch Angel after you're done with Buffy, even if you don't like his character much the story is awesome and you get to see where Cordelia and Wesley's characters go (Wes becomes a favorite of mine for sure).

While I haven't watched Seasons 6 and 7, I have a general idea of what happens in them. Then again, I'm sure there's plenty I'm unaware of...So I'm looking forward to finishing the series! It seems that Bangel- and Spuffy-shippers tend to have different views on the nature of love, morality, and other deep philosophical issues. (I'm not making a judgement call one way or the other; rather, my viewpoint stems from observing the most common arguments used to support the concepts of Bangel or Spuffy.)

you are very right about the Bangel vs Spuffy debate
It took me at least a minute to figure out your username. As a Spike fan, I should probably be a little ashamed. haha 😀

Welcome to the boards! I'm a latecomer to Buffy as well, having only watched it about 3 years ago. 🙂

Watch out for spoilers. 🙂

Welcome to the Boards! 😀 I love your username (hahaha) and I love reading your posts. Really smooth writing!

Yea yea, I'm late on the welcoming, but better now than never.

Reading your introduction, I agree that Angel and Darla were terrible on BtVS, but I must take a stand for Riley! That good ol' Iowa boy never gets love from anybody (*winks at Brinkster*). 🙁 The fifth season just portrayed him in the worst way imaginable, and even then he wasn't wrong on everything. Anyway, I should stop before I write an essay on that topic again!

You like Joyce?! HOW! WHY?! Ha ha. I don't think I've seen someone else put her in their favorites list before.

As for Angel: The Series... DO watch it! I was like you back then. I disliked Angel on Buffy (no pun intended). I thought he was stale and quite boring, so when I heard about his show I had my doubts. And sure, the first few episodes were not extraordinary, but give it one season. I promise you you won't regret it. Once I reached the end of S1 I was totally into it and when I finished the show all I wanted was more! Without spoiling you, Angel as a character is COMPLETELY (I might be exaggerating a bit) different on his show: he's funny, silly, badass, etc. He's an ACTUAL three-dimensional character. And of course, I'm just talking about him here... The rest of the characters are what makes that show as good as BtVS. The humor is Whedon'esque and Angel has a lot more shockers than BtVS, imo.

Anyhow, great to see such a passionate fan join us! 🙂

Tome: Thanks for the compliment on my writing! Joyce reminds me a little bit of my own mom, so I have a soft spot for her. I plan to watch "Angel" after I'm done with BTVS.

fredthe3rd: Five words or less! 😉
