Hi all,

After lurking for a long time, I decided to join you, so I'm new to this forum! I'd love to have some guidance regarding the inner workings of the forum and/or to have any advice regarding how to interact. And if you have time, I'd love to know when and why you started following Btvs? I find fascinating why people love this show (I'm addicted to it).

I started following Btvs during high school but I stopped after a couple of seasons. I re-started watching it in Netflix back then when they still had it available... and I actually bought it after they took it out of their streaming. Again, I love it! -- despite my age. (Most of) The characters are adorable and admirable in one way or another (even villains are fascinating in their own way). And I love the mythology and symbolism of the show.

I'm not going to be popular (probably), but season 7 is my favorite season and Spike/Buffy (Spuffy) are my favorite characters.

You know, I really like the whole arc spanning from season 5 to season 7, but I find season 6 to be super intense. It just drains me emotionally. So even though I'm a Spuffy fan (and they are REALLY hot in S6), I have to say that S6 is my least favorite season.

I never heard of BtVS when it first started airing (I was 10 or 11 at the time) until my early teens. I started watching it when season 5 was airing on tv3 Ireland in mid 2002, though I only watched a few episodes here and there from 5 and 6 around that time (I was more interested in other shows back then). I only really got into BtVS nearly a decade later (2009) when I started watching the series on Syfy UK and it’s been one of my top 3 fav shows ever since.

The show has flaws. I’m not really a vampire fan, but I still love it for reasons you mentioned (maybe because the vampire stuff is just a small part of it). It has a bit of everything: action, drama, humour, romance, etc. Buffy and Spike are two of my favourite characters, though I’m not a Spuffy fan.

Oh ok, personally I love S6 not just because of Spuffy but for the season overall like the darkness of it or the Willow storyline but I can see why the darkness of the sixth season is not for everyone.

I'm not really a Sci-fi/Fantasy follower (although I do like some of those shows like the X-files and Angel, besides BtVS, and I've read the occasional comic), but there are a lot of things that attract me from Buffy (as a show and as a character). And because of that I love and hate Joss Whedon, he plays with my emotions 🙂.

That’s ok about not being Irish. I’m not really a Sci-fi/Fantasy follower either or fan of dramas in general (I’m more of a comedy person), though I like some of those shows such as The Fugitive 1960s series and Angel along with BtVS. I think I like Joss Whedon, but he plays with my emotions too.

Thank you! And I know, the Bangel vs Spuffy is a never ending discussion, but it's interesting to read the opinions and interpretations of other people.

And I think that you are right regarding changing my opinion. I love reading the meta out there, and each time that I watch an episode, I pay more attention to certain actions/interactions, and I do change a bit my point of view. Buffy is my cheer me up show, so I re-watch it quite often. And love this forum!

Oh yeah, I forgot Faith. I like her a lot in S7, but not before, so I guess I have mixed feelings when it comes to Faith.

I caught it briefly with a friend when I was 16 and it was fairly new (and first season ep) who'd watch anything with vampires. I didn't even get to see the entire ep...it was okay, I recall (vaguely) that I liked the dialog (and I love it when vampires are bad guys) but it didn't have a chance to really impress me then. In the following years friends would try to get me to watch it and I meant to but was never really excited by the idea (and I watched very little TV anyway, and had to watch my expenses which had higher priorities).

I think it was 2004 when I finally rented season 1 on dvd from a video store. During this time I had a masculine girlfriend who wanted me to become more feminine in how I looked and acted (as opposed to my tomboyish self) and I was having trouble at first...I realized that I had subconsciously thought of feminine as weak, lacking agency, and likely victim for various reasons (though this wasn't the reason I became an athletic tomboy in the first place, which I still was as an adult at this time) and had to overcome that.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was perfect as the females were feminine and yet still strong willed, resourceful, assertive, and strong. I think that had a lot to do with the appeal of the show for me as it was just what I needed. (And I did become much more feminine in appearance and manners, yet remained assertive and athletic. As this also helped me in business since I was taken more seriously I've always remained somewhat feminine in appearance, though not as much as back then.)

Of course the characters and dialog and just general love of evil vampires did, too. I'm personally glad I saw season 1 first as it sucked me right in with the intro with Darla, whereas season 2 would've been hard for me to get into if I didn't already care about the characters. I also loved the familial and friendship ties in the show, more than any of the romance. I purchased the next 2 seasons, and loving that, I purchased the rest of the series, which wasn't a decision I made lightly given how little money I had to waste.


I'm not a fan of season 7 for my own reasons (both personal and due to my interpretation of the story and characters so far), but I don't take a difference of opinion on it personally and have learned that sometimes it's just best to shrug and drop it. Also, I'm not a shipper of any kind, though I find some ships easier to accept than others. I also love Spike's character in Buffy season 2-3 and anytime he showed up in Angel (good and bad guy).

I absolutely love Buffy. She's such a strong, self-reliant and independent woman, who has an awesome personality. Of course, there are some parts of her personality that I intensely dislike, but she's a great role model overall. And she grows a lot in 7 years, you can really see how she goes from being a child to being a woman. I kinda envy that sort of personality, I think that's why I like it so much. I wish I were more like her.

And I agree, the personal ties with friends and family make it more appealing, you get sucked into their dynamic. I think another aspect that I like a lot is that they deal with real life problems like the death of family member, having to drop out of school and work because they need the money, etc. It's a cool metaphor of adulthood mixed with fighting monsters and saving the world 🙂!

Hola! With your mom? How does she like it? I doubt my parents would ever like it. And how did you convince your mom to let you watch all those PG-13 scenes? (I know that you were 13/14, but still, isn't it kinda weird to watch it with a parent?). And I agree Willow is a really awesome character. After Buffy, I just "feel for" Spike more ("he's in my heart 😉")... dunno, he's such a romantic and lonely guy, I'd take him in if Buffy doesn't want him 😉.

I love Willow and Tara too (obviously 😉)
And I also love Buffy and Spike (the characters on their own and Spuffy)
And I love Fred, she is my favourite character on Angel.
My favourite Buffy season is season 5, but I love them all 💖.

I first watched Buffy when I was 9.
My parents had watched some episodes here and there when they were younger. And one of my mothers wanted to watch OMWF again. It was her birthday soon and my other mother decided to giver her the complete Buffy box set (1-7) as a birthday present.
Later I saw them watch it and wanted to watch with them, of course they didn't want their 9 year old daughter to watch it, but I persisted to watch it. Eventually they let me watch it and I covered my eyes everytime a vampire or demon was on screen. 😛
Later I got the Angel box set (1-5) for christmas and we watched that together too. 🙂
