Well, seeing as though you're all being so friendly 😉 could someone give me the lowdown on the sorting? I've asked to be sorted, so when I am, does that open up new areas to visit here?
 
Yes. You'll only be able to see and get into the dorm you get sorted in. Now you can't find any of them. What happens inside the dorm? It varies but it's a great place to get to know other members better. So no matter where you end up getting sorted is a wise decision. If by any chance you dislike your dorm you don't have to ever get back. But before you do, if that's the case, trying to solve the "problems" that might caused you to feel that way or make suggestions how to make it better should be welcomed.
