Hi, I thought I should check in. My username is descriptive enough, since I am an old Swede (48). Also a university professor (in animal ecology), which is why I thought Giles might be a suitable avatar...

I came late to the world of Buffy in more than one way, as I only discovered the show on DVD over the last year. Now I'm completely obsessed, and my wife and my 20-year old son at least likes to see the episodes over and over with me (my daughter has not caught on, though). However, I am the only one in the family who actually reads even the academic books of Buffy studies, of which there are quite a few.

I hope to be able to sneak off and post now and then. See you around!

It's nice to see someone else, besides myself and White Avenger, who helps raise the average age of our membership 🙂

You may also want to try posting in our BAD EGGS Adoption Forum, where new members may go if they wish to be mentored by another member who will help guide them around the boards.

Academic books

Someone wondered about the academic books. It took me while to realize that they are out there, but there is no question that Buffy is the most discussed TV-show ever in academic circles. There are books about gender issues, moral issues, language etc etc. I've only read a couple so far, but I'm really enjoying "Why Buffy matters" by Rhonda Wilcox. She is a professor of English who also co-edits an online international journal of Buffy studies and co-organizes a series of meetings of Buffy scholars every second year (now expanding to Whedonverse in general). Wilcox opened my eyes to the depths of symbolism and mythology present in every aspect of Buffy, from plot to names to lighting a scene...

To quote Wilcox (page 30) "In the world of television, there has probably never been a greater work of language than Buffy the vampire slayer".

Demand to watch Buffy in English class!

Oh, yes the swedish section. That´s very active, the last thread active is a over a year (closer to 2?) that I bumped (I didn´t notice it was so old until it was too late) about Basshunter! We seriously need som more swedes on here.
