Hello all...

I am brand new to the forum and just wanted to say "hello." The truth of the matter is that there are really two of us, my spouse and me, and we are both huge fans of the series. We also are avid prop and antique collectors. Over the years there have been some interesting acquisitions. But, I do have a question that I would like to pose to the community. We have not really aggressively collected many BtVS props because finding them with actual Fox Studios COA's are so hard to find (at one point we owned the crossbow used by Jonathan in the episode "Superstar" but ended up selling it to acquire a non-Buffy related relic).

Here's the question:

What do you think (no qualifications required) the price of one of THE ULTIMATE Buffy Props would be? I am talking about the Cross given to Buffy in the very first episode of the series (and of course appears on screen many, many other times), accompanied by the actual embossed/raised Fox Studios Certificate of Authenticity. The cross has been displayed in a protective case and has an established pedigree. While we have many interests in talking to other Buffy fans, we thought that this could be one of best place to collect opinions from others on what a fair sale price for something this rare would be. Also, since these are conjectures, albeit from very, very knowledgeable folk, if anyone could point us in the direction of professional advice on the matter we would appreciate that as well! Let the wild guessing begin! Glad to join and happy to introduce ourselves to you! 🙂

Well, if you were selling it to me, it should be no more than ten bucks, anybody else and we're talking billions :ninja2:

Honestly, I've no idea, but it could run into the thousands I imagine. Given the right situation and buyer/seller it might even be tens of thousands.

When you are selling a unique item based only on provenance, you have to have documented proof that it was the actual one used on the show. If you have that, the price could go anywhere. Without it, you get garage sale prices. Note that there may be more than one item in existence just to keep from stopping production in case something is lost or broken, so if you have the crossbow used by Johnathan, you just might find it is not the only one.

There are rabid collectors who would snap it up in an instant regardless of price. What you have to do is find them. No one knows the price you could get until you actually sell it or put it up at auction. I collect antique radios and FM tuners and I have seen some very ordinary ones go for a fortune and I have some superb ones that I got for next to nothing.

Hi Again---okay so yes I know I posted this many many months ago, but thank you both for the replies! Specifically @ Ethan Reigns: please excuse my poor word choice--it was a mistake. In addition to the uber-fancy coded-identification-numbered-multicolor-foil-type COA from Fox, there is irrefutable documentation for the the WELL established provenance (where I said pedigree, I meant to say "provenance" in the OP). My spouse was primarily concerned with the Scythe--both are in the case. Yes. THE SCYTHE, Those that really are as obsessed with BTVS as my spouse is will know that there were two--a "pretty version" (made of actual metal, one exists, and Joss Whedon owns it, and I doubt plans to part with it prior to death), and an "action shot" version (sorry I do not know film nomenclature). We own (I kid you not--they are encased in the same acrylic air-tight locked box mounted on the wall) both the "action" scythe (beat up to all hell--as it is made of resin or something, but still an unbelievable find) AND the cross given by Angel in the pilot. I have no clue how many of those were made--but we have enough documentation to convince an institution like Christie's or Sotheby's. If I was actually in the house right now I would take a picture (with something like today's newspaper) to show you all it is real and in our possession. Getting the documentation out is going to be a bitch--it is secured in the back of the case (out of sight), and the weird lock thingy for the case is tough to open (it's sort of a cross between a screw and a key-hole--like a screw that holds a key-level customized screwdriver bit); alas we would do it for someone serious enough. I feel greedy owning both. The scythe is what my spouse loves. The cross should go to someone who will love it just as much (for a fair market price of course 🙂 . Happy Halloween everyone!
