Charlotte Gill, owner of Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound in Southwest Harbor, Maine, wants to make cooking the crustaceans more humane by getting them high on cannabis. Her method, which she calls ‘high-end lobsters’, involves placing the creatures in a plastic container filled with pot-laced water, then letting smoke enter through a hose. So essentially it’s a lobster hot box. She believes this technique makes the crustaceans more relaxed – sedated even. So when it’s finally time to boil them, it’s more humane.

“I feel bad that when lobsters come here there is no exit strategy,” Gill said. “It’s a unique place, and you get to do such unique things but at the expense of this little creature. I’ve really been trying to figure out how to make it better.”

Although there have been no scientific evidence to back up her claim, Gill said that in one of her experiments, a lobster named Roscoe was calmer three weeks after it got ‘baked’. She also added that the new ingredient won’t affect the taste of the lobster, and it won’t get customers high from eating it.

The state of Maine, however, isn’t buying it – figuratively and literally. They’ve asked Gill, who is a registered medical marijuana caregiver, to stop testing on lobsters, citing it might be against state regulations. “Medical marijuana may only be grown for and provided to persons with a marijuana recommendation from a qualified medical provider,” said David Heidrich of the Maine Medical Marijuana Program. “Lobsters are not people.”

Still, Gill hopes that the authorities will eventually side with her. If not, she’s already made adjustments to make her method compliant with regulations. She hopes to finally sell her unique dish to customers by the end of the month. “I have made enough mistakes in my 47 years that I want to make sure that every action moving forward is one that I can live with, and also to show my son that his mom stands for what she believes in,” Gill said. “This world has enough pain and suffering as it is. It’s time to make it a better place, and I’m going to do my part, by starting here with this one thing.”

"High end". Heh. I had to open this to see if it was actual lobsters or Jordan Peterson.
To the dippo authorities in the state of Maine, how are cows killed are they shot or electrocuted, that is humane is it? And if they are deemed to be murdered humanely, who or what decides the method of murder is humane?
Should a person be murdered is the guilty party ever charged with inhumanely murdering a person.
Then there's the case against C Gill, poisoning before boiling, she reckons that is a humane killing. Who decides when the Lobster is ' out of it ' when it is on its second pack of Dorito's sorry, Birds Eye Fish Fingers?

This is high-larious 😀 I wonder what would happen if she just put the whole plant in the tank with them instead?

Is the tank round or square?
I thought this was going to be about dating classy lobsters.

Not that I judge, but...

said David Heidrich of the Maine Medical Marijuana Program. “Lobsters are not people.”

But as long as you don't take them into the jacuzzi with you, everything's peachy. 😛

You'd go for a lobster in a flash suit
Maybe this would affect the person later eating the lobster, like 'today we have lobster, and also we have the house 'special-lobster'.

But then you get the powerful munchies afterwards and have to go get a pizza or nacho platter after your classy restaurant visit...

But really, as far as the science goes this method doesn't work. Not sure if this is a waste of weed or if the owner is a genius for finding a way to write off a bunch of weed as a business expense.

Why do they have to be alive when they're cooked? I've NEVER understood that. 😢

If they been on the *weed* you can exchange the c for an f. Naughty Amber for writing that.

Once they die they have some sort of bacteria in their flesh that multiplies and releases toxins that pretty much can't be destroyed when cooking. Killling them before cooking greatly increases the risk of food poisoning. So you either boil them alive or flash freeze them the moment they are caught.

The toxins are only released if the hot water isn't boiling.
Humanely killing them by dropping them into boiling water that kills them instantly, that works just as well if you drop them in it ass first.
And please no comments about that as they are bound to be rude, or is that just me?

Oh and Amber Bunny Slippers from reply #11,
one of the reasons why they are alive when they are cooked is if the water isn't quite hot enough, they have a loud high pitched scream. Cooking dead lobsters is no fun.

Thanks so much for this! I can't believe I didn't look this up on my own. (I love eating prawns but my guilt over their being boiled alive as severely restricted the times I partook.)

A friend of mine used to work at a store selling live lobsters. Another employee would use the lobster stick to try to make the lobsters fight. It never worked, but when that specific employee walked by their tank they'd raise their claws at him, and not at any other employee. That is, they remembered him. And that tells me that they have more brain power than we give them credit for, and what people say about lobsters having very limited awareness of the pain at best is just another comforting lie we tell ourselves.

To you maybe, I know they deserve our credit. I often saw them on TV when I had an analogue TV, but they keep falling off my digital flat screen.

😨 That's creepy and super disturbing. I wouldn't want lobsters remembering ME. Then again, it's not like they can jump out of the tank and get me. Hopefully!!!!
