This week I've watched, Rob Roy. . . . twice, Last of the Mohicans, Braveheart, and Tombstone. I love them all, even if the history is a bit shaky in parts.

So I was wondering, what are you favorite historical films?


I'm kinda hoping that I can find some new awesome ones to watch that I haven't heard of.
I'd really like some new movies to fall in love with. 🙂
 
Tombstone is amazing, right up there with one of the best.

I love Pride and Prejudice (OK, it's not historically 'true', but it's true regarding the dress and era) same with The Other Boleyn Girl.

I really didn't like Inglourious Basterds, for one, it was misspelled for no perceivable reason, and they totally changed the end of WW2, which was ridiculous. I can suspend disbelief, but not that much!

The Wind that Shakes the Barely, Hunger, Band of Brothers ( I know it's a mini series but it is incredible ), The Magdelene Sisters and The Libertine.

Passion of the Christ is good, not sure it's historically accurate but it's rather gory and in Arameic.
 
"Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown" springs to mind. Oh, and I'd say "Seabiscuit" is a good historical movie, even if I began to watch it because of the horses.

Oh! I saw Mrs Brown a long time ago but I remember liking it. I'll have to find my old VHS of it. Thanks!

I get that, but I don't like that Tarantino is allowed his own "movie world", I don't think you should mess with something like WW2. Basically I don't like Tarantino, haha, but that's for another thread 😉
 
Thanks for all these movies guys! I'm totally gonna see which ones I can get on my Amazon Prime tomorrow while I'm at work. 😀
 
Being a Southerner by birth and a Georgian by the grace of God, I HAVE to say "Gone With The Wind," even though from what my grandmother told me, the Reconstruction Period in the South was much worse than the movie showed. "Jeremiah Johnson" and "Across The Wide Missouri," about the old mountain men. Then, what I like to call "semi-sequels: "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" and "Robin and Marian" in that order; "The Iron Mistress," "The Last Command," and "The Alamo," (The REAL one, with John Wayne, not Billy Bob's version); "Anna And The King of Siam" followed by "The King And I"; "Red River" and "The Tall Men" (if you consider Westerns as historical) movies); and "The Vikings" and "The 13th Warrior."

Those should keep any one busy for a rainy afternoon.
 
And don't forget Babette's feast!! 🙂 it's not about an historical event, but it's set in late '800 and it's very good!
 
Bravehart, Tombstone, The Patriot, Last of the Mohicans, Troy, Glory, Gladiator, 300, The Great Escape, West Side Story, Clash of the Titans, ....

there are so many more I can't even think lol 😀
 
Well if you like Tombstone, I suggest Clint Eastwood western films. Two Mules for Sister Sara is really good. It has to do with the French Mexican War. The main character is a Texan passing through Mexico looking for work. He saves a nun from some bandits. It sounds silly but it is a really good movie. Outlaw Josey Whales is also a very good one. The main character is on the run from Northern soldiers after the civil war. He was on the southern side. He is an outlaw just trying to find some peace. It has lots of cool action scenes with lots of American history in it.

Changeling, with Angelina Jolie comes to mind, one of Clint Eastwood's more recent films. It's the true story about a mother in the 1920's who came home from work to find her son is missing. Days later, the police supposedly "found" her son, but it was the wrong boy. I can't explain anymore because I'll be spoiling it. But it told the story about police corruption and how hard it was to be a woman in the 1920's. It is so dark and bleak, but it's a viewing experience you will never forget. I highly recommend it.

I find the concept of it absolutely terrifying.
