The increase is probably due to the media but they only highlight the problems. The fact of the matter is that whether crimes such as this are increasing or decreasing, they shouldn't be happening at all.IMO we need a law like Sarahs law. Do you agree/disagree, why?

I agree with most of Sarah's Law...apart from the statement about responsible members of the public having access to the list. This could be abused and, in my view, isn't needed. The rest is all very sensible and should help. If you have no idea what Sarah's Law is...clicky here .

Also going back to the mental illness issue, the mental hospital where Ian Huntley is being kept issued a statement saying that it could take up to a month to examine him properly so if he is faking I have faith that he will be found out. And unfortunately if they are found to be innocent, their lives will be ruined.

I agree, it'll take some doing to fake a mental illness for that long. And as you pointed out, if they are innocent, they will have no chance of a normal life...another pointer on what the media is/is not allowed to report perhaps?

I honestly don't know what should be their punishment. They are two evil people. They took away the lives of two little girls and then revelled in the attention they got from the media as they joined in the search parties. What punishment could equal a crime so heinous? I do know that my daughter will never be allowed to play outside of the household. It isn't safe anymore. Crimes like these seem to be on the increase but there is nothing being done to protect our children. Do events like this occur frequently in other countries because we don't hear about it. It seems to be out of control in the UK.

Things like this happen everywhere, sadly. Its disguisting. As im not a parent, i cant totally understand your feelings, but, in my opinion and a lot of people (inc. parents) that i have been speaking to, while you may want to prevent your child playing outside, you cant keep them locked up forever. I think id probably want to wrap my children up in cooton wool too, but i think thats not an option. Many safety precautions, yes, and i dont know how old your girl is, but not to an over-reacting state.
As rdjon rightly said, these crimes arent on the increase - theyve always been there, its just that they are being discovered and reported more.
About the "what if theyre innocent thing": i agree you cant totally prevent it in things such as this, but if i had my way, it would only be in certain conditions. For example, only extreme cases would get it - thieving, or even GBH would not get it. Also you would have to have proof that they, 100% did it - some may say you can never have 100% proof so 99.9999...%. For example, with DNA you ahve a like 1 in 10000000 chance of it not being you - mighty mighty MIGHTY big coincidence if you happen to be that 1 whos innocent and just happens to be a major suspect, wouldnt you say?
Its all so tough to call though, morally in particular.

My daughter is only 17 months old. I know it sounds extremist to say that I'd keep her in but it terrifies me to think that it could happen to her. I don't feel safe walking around by myself anymore. I agree there are safety methods that can be taught but how can a child defend themselves against someone that is determined to hurt them? It just makes me sad that our children are no longer allowed to remain children anymore. In this case I disagree with the death penalty. They have caused too much pain for the parents, the community and the nation. A quick death would not be punishment enough. They should live with a lifetime of pain just like the mourning parents.

I agree that the papers should not have released their identities, if it turns out they're innocent (although, as they've held them so long it seems unlikely that will happen) then they have ZERO chance of a normal life afterwards.

If the jails were more of a punishment instead of a holiday camp then i think more people would agree with locking them up for life, as it stands at the moment, prisoners are well treated, warm, fed and have access to entertainment (gyms, pool, tv's, etc).

What do you think about the parents/guardians/victims being allowed to determine the punishment? I'm sure i read about that happening in a country somewhere (can't remember which one though?)

NEVER ! ! ! That would be awful. If parents/guardians/victims have the say they could be a) influenced or b) too lenient or harsh. Eg, say there is a wifebeater who almost kills his wife and she is asked to condemn him. In many cases the wife feels its her fault and that she still loves him, meaning that she could even set him free. Also, say ian huntley is given to the people of soham, theyd be ripped apart - no innocent until proven guilty.
I agree id be more for life sentences if a) life meant life and b) if jails were more of a punishment instead of a holiday camp.
Little Bit, 17 months old is a very young. I agree its awful that anyone, not just children, cant feel safe on the streets. Its sooooo sad that children have to lose their lovely innocence so soon.

all i can say is can we bring back electro shock therapy????????? i totally agree with spike lover on how tragic this was, i too agree with sarahs law, i think as a human being we should have a right to know if children in our area are in danger by putting there foot outside their doors. i am totally sickened by this how many more innocent little children have to die before our country realises there is actually a BIG problem????

sorry but what does electro shock "therapy" have to do with it? And i use therapy in quote marks because it's horrific. I don't follow 🙁

Off the subject a bit but aren't babies being tagged now so their parents know where they are all the time. I personally don't think kids should be, too close knit, let them have their freedom!

One mother had microchipped her 12 year old daughter, so she can be tracked at any time. I don't like the sound of it personally; I mean we microchip dogs and cats to make for easy identification, not to track their movements!

Ims till slightly unsure on sarahs law, but i think i agree with it - i think i would if i had children. I definetly agree something ahs to be done - we have a problem that while i do not believe has increased, has been highlighted more by the press and been discovered more. But i do think its always existed.
I researched electro shock therapy (having never have heard of it) so i could comment and i have to say i do not agree with it at all. I just dont see how a humane society can do this, even to an ebil monster. I do support the death penalty in some cases, but only in a painless, quick way. Not this. I dont believe in it.
And as for tagging - a big no no. There security but that is way over the line!

well your opnions are toally valid, but i have strong opnions on this subject and thing that elctro shock therapy is fitting for a monster that does things to little children, only expressing my opnion so don't hate me!!!

Lol - of course i wouldnt hate you or anyone for their opinion!! I respect yours but still disagree. These people deserve the punishment but i dont believe in purely in the respect that if we start torturing even criminals in such an inhumane way, i think it will get worse and people might start taking the law into their own hands etc - it can only lead to bad things, IMO.

i heard about it, and it made me sad, how could someone do that to to innacent little girls, who never did anything to them, from the day i heard it i was hoping that they'd be found, alive but when they found the body's i cried.

my mum signed one on the internet, and so did i.

~*Phoebe*~

I signed a condolence book on the internet too. Its awful - as long as i live i will never understand monsters like that, never.

There was 3 official addresses on the net, i couldnt remember what they were so i searched for them coz one was through cmabrideshire police. They are going to turn them into real books to present to the families, i think. I think theyve probably stopped them now - and rightly so. Its too late - although this was a terrbile loss, everyone has to put it in persepective and start to move on, IMO.
