Some statistics :

The homosexual population :

The estimates vary from 6 to 7 % of the French population or from 3 to 7 % according to Tony Anatrella, that is to say between 1.8 million and 4.2 million people.
In gay magazines the estimate can be up to 10% of the population.

The pain of living of homosexuals :

80% of young homosexuals lead a double life and do not assume their homosexuality.
About 10% of homosexuals totally reject their homosexuality.
Only 5 to 10% of homosexuals are comfortable with themselves.
45% of homosexuals (female) and 36% of homosexuals (male) admit being teased by the desire for children.
20% of homosexuals are married men.

If you learn that your son is homosexual :

20%: I would be deeply shocked and I would do anything to change it.
51%: it would hurt me but I would let him live as he wants.
13%: if possible I would try to change it.
14%: that would not bother me.

Behavior of French against homosexuals :

52% of French people find it shocking that a homosexual is a teacher in the school of their children, 47% say that they will not be.

52% of French people find it shocking that a homosexual is President of the Republic, 46% say they will not be.
Homosexuality is a disease that must be cured : 23% in 1997 French approved this sentence against 42% in 1973.

Where do homosexuals live ?

46% of homosexuals are in the Paris region.
40% are in cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.

The relationship of homosexuals with their parents :

82% of homosexuals had no good relationship with their father for 18% of heterosexuals
39% of homosexuals spoke more easily with the mother
66% of homosexuals had excessive relations with their mother, compared to 42% of heterosexuals
59.4% of homosexuals hate their father against 37% of heterosexuals
66% of homosexuals are afraid of their father versus 54% of heterosexuals

Socioprofessional categories :

43% of homosexuals among employees and intermediate professions compared to 40% of heterosexuals.
7 to 8 times fewer workers among homosexuals than among heterosexuals (4% versus 31%).
35% of homosexuals in wealthy categories (executives, higher intellectual professions, etc.) against 17% among heterosexuals.
No farmer reported exclusively homosexual activity.

The taboos of the French :

41% of French people find it shocking that a member of his close family is homosexual (18% quite shocking and 23% rather shocking).
54% of French do not find it shocking that a member of his family is homosexual (20% rather not shocking and 34% not at all shocking).

The French are shocked :

63% by a couple of homosexuals kissing in a public place
46% by the existence of homosexual demonstrations or parades
36% to see a gay couple hold hands in a public place
24% by the existence of bars or meeting places frequented mainly by homosexuals.

A recent French Internet survey of several thousand homosexual volunteers transiting through a gay site confirmed this :

During adolescence, the perception of their homosexuality pushed 16% of them to consider suicide; this perception was a cause of suffering for 54% of them; brought about their growth (13%); left them indifferent (11%)
During their schooling, homophobic remarks were heard by 87% of them (on the part of their classmates), 16% (by their teachers) - were directly addressed to them: 37% of them, while 8% suffered a homophobic physical aggression
Their homosexuality would have been easier if they could talk to a parent (54%), a friend (43%), a neutral third (29%), a gay friend (63%)
More than souhaitent of them want to talk about homosexuality at school, in the form of awareness, from the start of the college

I find that interesting to know all of that. What do you think ?

Ok I am very disturbed by the teachers who made homophobics remarks to students...this is awful!

where are they getting their stats though?
One funny thing about Americans is their romanticised view of Europe. Europe sucks!

How reliable is the data? The source? That's my only real pertinent question.

Otherwise I, as a Brit, am always told how loving, open and honest Europe is compared to the stuffy/sexually repressed UK and clearly in some (actually most) matters that isn't true.

I know how uh, 'traditional' most Italians are when it comes to homosexuality but this- if accurate- surprises me. I thought France was all 'j'taime' about stuff.

Pretty disappointing numbers overall. I don’t know what the stats in America are, but it’s 2018. We really should be past this being a problem. 🙁

These statistics left me curious about Portugal, so I made a quick Google search and found this: Country Ranking | Rainbow Europe

It's a ranking of European countries according to their respect of human rights. Portugal is actually number 6, just behind France at number 5 and England at number 3!

That is not very surprising but quite sad. I am 100% sure things are better here in Canada/Quebec but I would be interested to know the true numbers. But maybe it's would not be a good thing because surely the majority of the population would not be as ok as I am on the sudject. I know quite a few people with whom a had arguments about homosexuality so I know that all quebecers are not ok with it!

Actually I would be surprised if Canada was any better, I don't believe that it is

Oui, le pourcentage concernant les professeurs m'a choqué !
I'm not sure things are better in Canada. Since the war between India and Pakistan in 1977, Canada has accepted a large influx of immigrants from this area because of preferential immigration treatment at the time for Commonwealth countries and to a large extent, they oppose homosexuality and sex education. This is comparable to the failure of the same-sex marriage initiative in California where too many Hispanic Catholic voters shot it down.

At least one good thing about the data is that homosexuality is not regarded as a disease nearly as much, so the "pray the gay away" con artists are not going to get as wealthy (like Marcus and Michelle Bachmann in the US).

The larger (more than double) number of homosexuals in the professions may not be as surprising as it seems - blue collar workers are merciless in the presence of gays.

As for rural farmers not reporting any homosexuality, they should have asked the sheep.

They're having sex with sheep???? :P
One things I noticed is the majority of the person who are Homophobic believe in god. Because God cretaed Adam and Eve, so they think it's not a natural think to have sex with a person of the same gender than you.

I think there are 2 things at work here, at least in the USA. One is that no movement (and thus money and political clout) really gains traction without a devil to oppose, and so they'll invent one if they have to. The number of devils the Christian Right (not to be confused with all of Christendom) have to oppose have dwindled to LGBT issues. Should we get truly self-aware robots able to adapt on their own (and thus could learn to disobey) or some similar scifi concept that would make people nervous at best (and thus something they can invent a rationale on why God hates it and it threatens all goodly folk) then I expect they'd even put LGBT issues on the back burner like abortion as the power that "devil" represents to the greater society is less with each passing year and turn on the new "devil." As long as the money starts flowing in directly and indirectly picks back up then I'm sure they'll be praising Mammon God.

The other is to overcome one's own guilt. I see this one time and time again, in both the news to real life. If they've got a vice to feel guilty over (even if it's something they really shouldn't--and I suspect a lot of vices are obsessions created by relentless shaming and preaching against it they endured during their formative years) then they'll find a scapegoat. It's essentially trying to feel better about themselves by tearing down others who are, in their eyes, worse.

As a minor but real life example for me, I have an aunt who is very vocal against gay marriage who became very upset when I pointed out that by the Bible verse she quoted was that Jesus said to divorce and remarry was adultery in the eyes of God (Jesus said cheating--at least done by the woman--is the only reason God accepts for divorce) and the way she exploded (she was on her third marriage with kids by each husband, very similar to Kim Davis in US news) let me know I really hit a nerve. I could go on.

Maybe I should repost the Harper Valley PTA song again...

This is so annoying and the way the lgbtqi set up the argument against religion in the recent Australian votes. It is NOT true for me, nor plenty of other christians (including gay christians -yes they exist 😱)

The religious voted no against the term "marriage" for same sex union. Many of us don't give a crap whos bits you prefer lick. Its personal choice as to how you live your life - God gave us free will. What I believe (and many others too), changing what marriage means to fit law, is changing the faith, twisting it from what it was made for - natural procreation. Its forcing gay people into heterosexual norms, instead of pushing society forward into being inclusive of ALL family units.

I do not understand why the law could not be changed to a more inclusive word than marriage. That marriage could be left as a religious construct to the religious, while government law could change to something that covers ALL sexual preferences, family units and genders (with age restrictions). The law should be more loose on who has the rights (in regards to welfare and death) to be head of the family. Marriage is an outdated concept in this world - leave it for those who have the faith to endure. Divorce and multiple marriages also make a mockery of the institution.

My distress over the gay debate has been caused by hateful speak from the lgbtqi groups. They lump me in with homophobes and bigots because they could not be bothered to listen, nor be inclusive of any other opinion besides their own agenda. I dont think many understand how nasty the debate got here. Gays have never really faced bad treatment in Australia. Majority in this country have always been tolerant. Its only been as gay media turned on christians in such a hateful way that there has been more backlash. It really sucks that a group preaching tolerance and acceptance have been allowed to straight up abuse people who hold different beliefs. Perhaps church groups have been intolerant in the past, but presently and within my lifetime - gay people have been accepted with the same basic human rights as every other aussie (which is still actually more rights than the aboriginal australians, its like we skipped the bit on race relations and went straight to pandering to the rich and educated because they make the most noise)

Can you please provide the stats on how many gay people live in poverty? How many are currently homeless or unable to access education, welfare, water, shelter and food?

@OccaQuokka covered a lot of it, but I just want to say that this is very stereotypical and it kinda bothers me. Even our pope has said "Who am I to judge?" when it comes to homosexuality. Furthermore I know that I'm one of many Christians who understand that being gay is not a choice, and God created everyone in his own image and likeness, so there is no valid argument to discourage being homosexual. I think that people assume the worst in Christians because the Bible and religious history might prohibit it, but I really don't think that's an assumption that can be made anymore.

If all Christians could be like you!!!! :)

Maybe not you, probably not all the christians but it's still a fact that several persons who are against the homosexuals use the religion as an argument. It's not me who say that, it's not the community of gay people, it's just a fact ! But do you know what I believe on that subject ? I believe religion is like art and everyone interprete what is written as they want !

I actually don't know !

Religion definitely played a part in Prop 8 passing in CA. While the media may have been cherry picking to have people mention Jesus or God or similar religious views, the vast majority of the commercials against gay marriage also mentioned God, Jesus, or the Bible at least once (though it wasn't just Christian groups against it). I recall the religious gatherings to "pray against gay marriage" as well and a Catholic Church (one opposed to a measure to combat sex trafficking as well, interesting enough) held a "prayer session" against the measure and it was a bigger gathering than Easter or Christmas (some couldn't get into their driveways for blocks around).

They don't make up all of it, nor are all Christians against it (even if they are personally or for religious reasons they can still support separation of church and state), but I'm not going to go along with the idea that they're not the majority of the opposition.

It's also worth mentioning that Christendom rose up and said Westboro Baptist was "not with us" once Westboro thanked God for 9/11 and crashed the funerals of soldiers, but Westboro did the same to gays for about 10 years before that without any condemnation from the rest of Christendom.

Correction: the Catholic Church, at least the one about 2 blocks from where I used to live, prayed FOR the measure and against gay marriage.

We're number 2 and we suck, so the rest of you should be ashamed 😛

I know this is a serious issue, but I can't help gloating at the fact that Sweden is below Croatia.
