What do you think of the hospital scene between Xander and Angelus. Did Angelus give in and walk away too easily? Do you think that Angelus should have done something to Xander here? Xander is the only one who doesn't really get hurt by Angelus, did this scene have something to do with that?

It is a little weird. Because even if Angel wanted to make a scene by attacking Xander, he still would have gotten away from the guards or whoever was around. Maybe it was the timing. He just didn't want to do this then and there. I have no doubt Angel wanted to kill (or hurt) Buffy's friends because Buffy herself. He wants to make her suffer and strech it out as much as he can. He enjoys the torturing part. So I guess it has to do with the timing. He had no intention of doing something just yet. I don't even think his plan was to attack Buffy there. Maybe just hurting her by words.

This scene always confused me. I don't know what the heck Angelus was doing there. I didn't understand. I suppose he was there with the flowers to mock Buffy or something but when he gave Xander the flowers and left, it was very weird.

Agreed. Just watched this scene about five minutes ago. I was like . . . what? Angelus? Where are you goin? Why did you even show? . . . *is confuzzled

I always thought this scene was there just to have David Boreanaz in the ep more. He was a regular by this time, wasn't he?

Seems a bit pointless. Although quite good to remind the viewers of the threat of him still out there and whatnot, he wasn't actually very threatening here, so... pointless.

I felt like Angelus was there to intimidate and scare them... As if to "kick her while she's down" type of thing. Angelus could have easily killed or injured Xander, but he liked to toy with his victims a lot before he ever actually physically hurt them (i.e. Drusilla), hence his comment about getting to Buffy first sexually. He wanted to hurt Xander emotionally by playing on his crush on Buffy in that moment.

This line is so freaking slashy I can't help but melt!!! 😱

Angelus wanted to scare Buffy with the flowers and came across Xander who stood up to him like the brave boy he was and that probably pissed off Angelus so much that he lost the desire to see Buffy.

Angelus did try to kill Xander in BB&B. He was going to kill him and send his body to Buffy as present but Drusilla stopped him.

Willow/Xander/Cordelia managed to kick his ass earlier in the episode, so I can why he'd be more on his guard since there were a couple of cops there if I'm not mistaken. Not worth the risk, he must've thought.

This is true. Didn't think of that.

That's the feeling I always get when I watch that scene. Don't particular enjoy that. I try to avoid thinking like that usually.

This sounds plausible enough for me and is a much nicer explanation than the one above. 🙂

That scene confused me. It had no meaning.

If he even tried to kill Xander, he would have managed to do that..

I guess they just tried to point out how much they both hate each other..

I have to agree with this. While I'm sure Angelus would have loved to taunt Buffy, and bringing her flowers sounded like something right up his ally, the idea that he brought them, had a little spat with Xander, and then left seemed very awkward. There had to be a better way to incorporate Angelus into the scene. I guess I blame poor writing on this one. It reminded me of Angelus's useless scene in Go Fish. These scenes almost weaken the character of Angelus and destroy his credibility as this badder than bad vampire.

Exactly. It's completely believable that he'd want to taunt her, and what better time/place to do that than when she's sick, and in the hospital. But the bullying of Xander in the hallway and leaving shortly after didn't quite seem like it hit the mark, for an infamous killer with a couple centuries of practice. If he really wanted to freak her out, he could have come right into her room. At night. Or popped his head up outside her window. Yikes, just got chills.

Mhh I asked me the same thing and I get to the conclusion that Angel just wantet to the others angry. And then there was Xander.

Angel know that he can't attack anybody in hospital because of the guards everywhere.

But that doesn't really matter for him. He saw how angry and hurt Xander was by seing him, and that was enought satisfaction for him. That's what i thought

I think that some of you are are making the mistake of looking at Angelus and thinking "Angel," The reason that Angelus avoided the confrontation in the hospital is the same as why he was hiding in a coal mine in the flashback in "Fool For Love" a couple of seasons later. Angelus is NOT a fighter. Given a choice, he runs. Sure, he could have probably killed Xander, the police, and whatever hospital staff decided it lend a hand, especially if none of them except Xander (who would have obviously been the first one to die) knew that he was a vampire, therefore would be totally unprepared for his strength and speed.

And, just to clarify, don't think that Angelus' reluctance to fight unless cornered is due to any lack of skill. He CAN fight, he just prefers not to. It isn't his style.

That is my thinking exactly

I think the purpose of Angelus showing up at the hospital was to instill fear in Xander. In his mind he assumed Xander would tell Buffy Angelus stopped by. Xander being the good friend he is didn't want to upset Buffy she had already been through enough.

Also, I think the scene was also meant to show how evil Angelus really is. He was willing to be seen in a public place without his soul in order to send Buffy a message. He would stop at nothing to make sure she was unhappy.

It just seemed like he wanted to taunt her and her friends. The scene did seem a little awkward haha it was kind of just an excuse to have him in the episode.

The first time I saw this episode, I thought there would be more of a throw-down, but looking back I wonder if Angelus thought it would be worth the trouble. He was probably just going to her room to screw with her mind more, not kill her. He could have killed her in her sleep if he just wanted her dead, but that wasn't his goal.
