Hot Topic: A new relationship for Buffy?

Can a new relationship for Buffy - in the comics - possibly match the intensity that the televised relationships have?

(Basically, is it possible to create a new lover for Buffy, in the comic, who is as interesting and as emotionally resonant with the viewers as are Angel, Spike and Riley?)

Of course it's possible if they manage to make this new character interesting and provide for the necessary development. Another plus would be that the newbie would also have is own (interesting) stuff going and would establish relationships to the other characters as well. And please refrain from more Spike and Angel are jealous drama *yawn*. Oh, and not another vampire again!!

Honestly, though, I think it's best if she stays solo for a while and the writers concentrate on her personal development. She's so ridiculous immature, bitchy and petty this season, I'm almost at the verge of thinking that she needs an own redemption arc. As in she really screws up in a mayor way, similar to Faith or Willow. I dunno, maybe she almost kills Giles, or some random people, during a rampage, triggered by Spike's break-up, or something like that 😀. Anything to make her character interesting (and eventual likable) again.

Sure it can. There are great, iconic, relationships in comics that are interesting to read about and examine; Spider-Man/Gwen Stacy (or Mary-Jane) is one that immediately springs to mind, or Batman/Talia Ghul.

And while I'm holding off judgement on s10 Spuffy until the end of the season I think it might be too late to do this with Buffy.
If they'd started in S8 to build her with a fresh love interest by introducing a new character that may eventually become a love interest (they did this pretty much straight away with Willow and Alywyn) but every time that was attemptyed with Buffy it was depicted as a red herring.
Her and Satsu was hammered home by everyone except Buffy as 'an experiment' or whatever, basically meaningless according to the likes of Xander and Spike. Dowling went nowhere before fizzling and was dull anyway.
The two vampires were the ones that were focused on- and even here the writing can become increasingly pedestrian. There are only so many stories than can be written about the slayer/vampire thing- and they'd all been done by S7 anyways.

I agree that the writers need to take a long look at Buffy as a character, think about where she's going, the many mistakes she's made, her increasingly grating behaviour and try and go back to basics.
In the next season Buffy, her sister and her friends need to try to figure out her place in life. No real need for 'new' romance.

But I guess if they wanted a new love interest who already had their own rich backstory, one that already has a deep connection with Buffy, one that offers fresh opportunities for storytelling, one where people could actually picture the sort of chemistry that the relationship would have...

I think it is entirely possible to build another relationship for Buffy, though it would take a lot more creativity than has been shown by the writing team thus far. It would be easier for it to be an established character. If they go for a new character they will have to make them compelling enough to compete with Spike or Angel. Maybe fresh new writers, with new ideas, are what's needed
