Hot Topic: How much are you bothered by continuity errors?

How much are you bothered by continuity errors? A small example: Angel telling Joyce on BtVS that he doesn't drink coffee because it makes him jittery, while in season 1 of AtS he drinks it all the time.

Oh I am deeply bothered by it. I hate all of the continuity errors, including the ever-changing mythos of the show. Yes. The continuity errors is a big reason why I cannot rewatch the show. It's all I see. They are what kept the show from being great. It's my number one complaint about the series.

To me, it depends on what kind of watching I am up to. If I am in a critical mood, I find it annoying. If I've got one eye on what I watch and one eye on the laundry I am folding, I don't care.

If I enjoy it, I will watch it regardless of continuity errors.

I don't care much about continuity errors if they're maybe understandable and not the result of lazy writing.
The more Buffy went on the more the writers seemed to stop caring about sticking to the rules they set themselves and just do whatever they wanted. That tends to annoy me more than 'oops' moments or fact-checking bloopers.

Only the major stuff bothers me . They went to considerable trouble to make inverse rules ...then broke them willy-nilly .

In Amends , the harbingers are performing rituals to give the First power to manifest as a ghost . Nothing ever made of it throughout season 7 .🙄 The First can't affect the world directly ...unless it's Dawn in 'Conversations with Dead People' . Then it's a regular magical powerhouse . Amy seemed to master painless teleportation a tad too readily considering Willow had to absorb reams of evil spells and eat a magician before she could attempt it .

Magic and medicine don't mix ...until they do . I could go on 🙂

It does seem a bit churlish to expect consistency in a fantastical world but in my opinion the Buffyverse worked best played out like that .

Really small ones I just shrug over, but there are some that drive me bonkers and I respond by yelling at the screen.

Actually it may not have to do with how big or small they are, it's probably more of what type they are, some things grate on me even if they are basically inconsequential.

The Angel coffee thing I understand. I never used to drink it, and now I drink a cup every lunchtime from a well-known UK retailer. But ask me a few years ago I'd be adamant I didn't drink it, so I get things like character foibles can change over time.

On the most part I can forgive the Buffy writers for inconsistencies. I can't think of anything really big that annoyed me off the top of my head right now, I'm sure there is though.

It never really bothered me, but I like making fun of it when I'm watching with others 😀

The thing is, the errors in Buffy did not go to lengths like Doctor Who or Glee (only two I can name on the top of my head); some of those did really bother me.

I honestly don't notice them all that often, but once they are pointed out they are all I can see...so if I really want to enjoy a show I'll stay away from discussions and reviews about the show.

On shows like BtVS and AtS I don't care much. Not these days anyway. I was more annoyed about stuff like that before.
BtVS and AtS are more about the characters and fun dialogs. The arcs and mythology comes second so I'm okay with some mistakes.

Having said that I wouldn't mind if they had done a better job with the continuity though. lol
I mean good continuity are never a bad thing after all.

Exactly! Buffy-Boards taught me that much. If I enjoy the show don't discuss it with anyone that isn't face to face so that you can slap them when they talk crazy. If it wasn't for Buffy-Boards I stil might actually like the show.

It bothers me in so much as I wonder how much the writers really care about the show if they can forget something like that.

It might just be something small - like the coffee thing, on in SPN, remembering that the boys had previously said they'd never been to the Grand Canyon - but to the fans, it's something huge, something that we discuss to death. I know that this is just a job to the people writing the shows or movies, but I still wish they'd take the time to just...pause and fact check some stuff.

I am not bothered by peanuts, when it comes to an outstanding show like Buffy.

I always try to look at the greater picture.

So, its a pleasure to rewatch the Show over an over again. 🙂

"I agree . Small things I can gloss over just like if I reading a book & they miss spell a world it doesn't bother me as long as I know what they saying.
Plus if it in character then there all shorts of reasons. And it different for real life so there reasons why . But sometimes something happens that makes
me either get mad at the writers or look confushed or want to slap someone.

I would assume, the more Buffy went on, the more complexe the whole picture became. More parts (episodes accumulated), more part interaction. Considering this circumstances, I would say, they did a great job. 🙂

And to point out something positive about Buffy (a show with a memory). Willow is wearing here S1 E1 outfit in S4, final episode. And they are talking about it. Thats a positive and great example for playing by the rules of the show. 😉
