Hahaha, Jonathan... I've currently been watching BtVS with two new fans(yay!) and whenever we'd see Jonathan in an episode, I'd be like 'Guys, this dude is totally important later on.' (yes I'm a total spoilers machine) and they would respond with a 'Huh? He's 5 feet tall!'. 😛

But yea, I love how he randomly appears in a few scenes in the first few seasons. I'd be curious to know if Joss planned from the start to use him as a *villain* later on.

I don't think so. First, he didn't know there would be season 6, he didn't know if there was anything after season 5 - the season that all of the cast's contracts were over.
Plus, I remember reading something about him (Danny Strong) being Marti Noxon's relative, and she brought him in. That's why he'd show up here and there until Joss has decided to give him bigger and bigger roles.
