How are the comics doing?

I'm only really getting caught up with the comics at the moment, and after looking into the Angel & Faith, Willow and Spike Spin off, I've only just realised that they are turning Buffy into a proper comic property.

Like how the Avengers might have a number of titles out at the same time and have some cameos and cross overs between them.

I'm really glad with this, cuz one of my main problems with season 8 was how long it was and how slow it was. I remember Scott Allie addressing all this when he said season 9 would be shorter and would address those issues, but cuz I hadn't been keeping up I hadn't been following.

I know Season 8 was a success, has season 9 or the spin offs been selling well, does anyone know?

I'm gonna have a look around myself, but just thought I'd ask.
 
I can't say this definitively, Dorotea is much more familiar with the comic sales, but as far as I know, the Buffyverse titles are one of Dark Horses best sellers. However, their sales have been dropping, pretty much since they started.
 
Sorry to answer my own question, but other might find it interesting.

Diamond Comics Distributors list the top selling comics and various stats, They listed the top 500 comics of 2012 based off sales.

Buffy wasn't on the list coming in at [HASHTAG]#866[/HASHTAG] but:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 Volume 2: On Your Own ranked #7 on the top 100 Graphic Novels for December 2012, with DarkHorses next entry at #15

Season 9 Vol 1/2 and Season 8 Vol 1 and the library edition made the list of top 500 graphic novels in 2012 at 84/203/327 and 333 respectivly

There was only 2 comics ahead for DarkHorse in Graphics Novels, Avatar the Last Air bender(3 volumes) and Hellboy(1 volume)

It sounds like they are doing pretty well over all for DarkHorse, I'd heard good things about Seaosn 8 but less about season 9, haven't seen anything for the spin offs yet

Yeah that was the last I'd heard, I think the last news item I read was when season 9 first started and it said the figures were a good bit down on season 8.
 
How they doing? Bad. The sales figures show a consistent and significant drop from year to year, some even claim that "Buffy" comic has lost about 85% of its readership since season 8 #1
 
Wow, interesting.

Do you mean overall or for DarkHorse in general, like the fact that an issue of season 9 was DarkHorses best selling comic would mean that for the company specifically their doing well, but overall compared to other comics not great?
 
Just looking at the figures and 85% sounds about right.

Issue #1 of Season 8 sold 109,912 copies the first month it was out. That issue continued to sell about 16/15 thousand issues for the next couple of months and then spluttered out. I've heard 160,000 thrown around as the final figure for that issue. Even if that isn't the case, it is very very close to that.

In contrast, the latest issue (with data available) Buffy S9 #16, sold 23,896 copies during the month of its release.

Oh wow, that's a major drop!
From what I hear, not so good. I would buy them, it's just that no store stocks them where I live, and I'm not driving up to the big city just to buy them

Wider distribution may help

If you have a color printer, you could print a screen capture, though that takes a long time and probably costs more than buying the physical book. 🙂

It's actually really easy to order comics through Amazon. I do it all the time. Shopping online is kind of one of those things that is a bit intimidating at first, but once you get used to it, it's incredibly easy and convenient. Amazon in particular is cheap, reliable and really, really fast. And with comics, they beat every comic book store out there by 25 percent on cover price, at least. You should just wait until the books are released in trade paperback or hardcover and order them. I do that with every comic, and most of the books, I read.

I actually buy digital, then trade paperbacks when they come out -- trade paperbacks are great for actually having a physical copy, which I insist on (I'm weird like that -- I like owning stuff). Also, I believe that they are where the most money is made in comics (digital sales may be that now, but I'm not sure about that), so I'm thinking that the trade paperback sales numbers would be really interesting and tell more of the story as to how well the comics are doing.

Good point, it'd be interesting to see those numbers. I know for me, I used to buy single issue comics years and years ago, but storing them was a huge pain in the ass. Getting them in one bound story is much better, or at least, that's what I've found as a reader.

My brother gets all his comics digitally now, and he swears by them. I think they're doing quite well just in general. I know Marvel and DC have had big jumps in sales with them.

That's mainly how I get all my Buffyverse novels/books. It's easier to find them online than looking around at the stores around me
 
Comichron have the trade data too and they seem to continue to sell well enough. Though, you're still looking at more than a 50% drop from the first trade of S8 to the latest S9 trade release.
