Hey everyone,

the Season has started and with all the Christmas karma on the boards, I thought it would be fun to have a thread comparing traditions. I'll even go first 🙂

I moved away for uni and haven't lived at home for 5 years and I was in a relationship for the past 4, so this is the first Christmas in years that I'm gonna spend entirely with my family (no sympathy thank you^^). Usually, my brother (who doesn't live at home anymore either) and I arrive a couple of days before Christmas Eve and because my parents both work full-time and haven't had time to do it earlier, we spend the run-up to the holidays in one long frantic preparation session and clean, cook, bake and decorate like maniacs. On the morning of Christmas Eve, I meet my oldest friend (who I see about 3 times a year because she still lives in my hometown) and we stroll through the city centre (I use this term ironically) and browse for some last minute gifts for second-tier relatives. We then go for "just the one" mulled wine at the local christmas fair, which usually evolves into a three hour session of solid drinking and we go home wearing either Santa hats or blinking antler yokes or some other dorky Xmas paraphernalia and enthusiastically singing carols.

At home, I will find the rest of my family engaged in a full-blown shouting match because a) a piece of the nativity set is missing, b) my mum forgot to include a vegetarian option in her dinner plans or c) someone suggested to exclude my dad's unpopular racist sister from the round of Christmas visits the next day (tick as appropriate). The real reason is of course that we aren't used to spending so much time together in such a confined space and everyone's expectations for a perfect family holiday are of course totally unrealistic, but suggesting that would equal a death wish, so I try to escape to my room as quietly as possible. Half an hour later, someone will timidly knock on my door and suggest a game of Scrabble or Trivial Pursuit, the fight forgotten until the next time someone persists that "Whedonesque" is a word. *coughs*

When it's getting dark, we all go to Mass, listen to the tone-deaf children's choir butcher all seven stanzas of Silent Night, go home, listen to my dad reading the Christmas story from the bible while we have tea and biscuits and pretend not to strain our ears for the sound of the little bell that indicates that our mum has finished preparing everything in the living room. And then it's PRESENTS' TIME!

On Christmas Day, we go see our assorted relatives, hand out and claim more presents and eat so much food that we could feed an entire third world country for at least a week. When we get back, we watch Little Lord Fauntleroy, play fussball and bicker because my dad suddenly can't remember the rule that he himself invented, namely that the losing team has to crawl under the fussball table on all fours. Depending on the amount of nog that has been imbibed, the recriminations and accusations can be quite upsetting and sometimes end in physical violence (like that one time my brother accidentally hit my sister in the face when a ball that he'd thrown on the table for emphasis bounced back rather violently and she had to go to the hospital and get four stitches in her eyebrow. My mum says she'll never forget the look the doctor gave my dad when they brought her in; apparently a lot of violence happens over the holidays).

Boxing Day is pretty much the same, only with a lot less enthusiasm and Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings instead of Little Lord Fauntleroy. Also, instead of playing games later, my siblings and I get dressed up and join the rest of our peers at the local club where we indulge in the lovely tradition of "lapidating Stephanus", which basically consists of getting good and hammered with people you only ever see on this occasion and the next day is usually spent in bed.

As I said, I haven't been part of the entire thing for the past years because I was also visiting my ex boyfriend's parents and I'm not sure I'm prepared for the undiluted experience, but I'm actually kinda looking forward to it. Now I can't wait to read your stories 🙂

Less detailed for me - this is the baby's second Christmas, so we still don't have our own traditions as of yet. Christmas Eve will be with my in-laws coming to the house and me making dinner (i.e. me getting us Chinese). Christmas morning will be spent here with my boy opening up his presents from Santa, then we'll head over to my in-laws house.

We're visiting my parents not this weekend, but the weekend after that to have our early Christmas / gift exchange then. It'll be fun, but chaos with so many people. I have 5 sisters and 2 brothers - and I'm the only one who's married with a child, so he'll probably get far too much for us to travel back on the plane with.

I'll be working. Stupid Blockbuster lol. To top it off, working a double shift. It's not so bad, I don't have family to spend it with so might as well make some money 😉 Yay for making double the money on holidays!

Double-time on Xmas day karma!
awww, mayfever, that sounds like so much fun!!! (at least to me XD)
And that sucks aylar!!!!
My christmas celebrations only last one day...and a half
The night before my mum cooks a turkey and a trifle, and then the next day we open presents and wait for my relatives to arrive at about 10 or 11. And then we eat. And get presents XD and everyone leaves sometime during the night

I love christmas so much 🙂

I always spend Christmas with my family. Our family from Germany is coming here, and one day we're at someone's house, and the next day someone is here. Mostly it's crouded, but I get to see people who I haven't seen for a long time.

I love Christmas to.

What I do each year changes quite a lot, but this year I'll be doing my favourite type of Christmas. Christmas Eve I'll be staying at my parents house where we have salad and some bread rolls and mince pies and sit down to watch all our favourite TV Christmas specials. Men Behaving Badly. The Office. The Royle Family.

I used to be allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve, but I guess we'll be skipping that tradition this year as I'm getting a shopping excursion instead 🙂

Christmas Day we're doing the hell typical Australian stuff - tasty fresh seafood, cold beers, swimming in my parents pool, going for a long walk under blue skies next to the river and then napping in air conditioning.

I can't wait this year 🙂

This sounds awesome. Cold beers, seafood, swimming. Why can't it be warm here on Christmas?

At least I've escaped the northeastern US and their brutal winters - it's milder here in Maryland.

Summer Christmas's are amazing!
I LOVE Christmas ( It's My 2nd Favorite Holiday 🙂 )

This Year We Have Family Members Coming in (sometimes we go out of state) Every Year We Have Dinner, Open Present's and Hang Out 🙂.

On New Year's Eve We All Stay Up Late & Play Games, Then We Watch The Ball Drop at Midnight 🙂 & Then We Set Off Fireworks/Firecrackers 🙂

How fun to hear about everyones christmas!

I celebrate christmas with my closest family - my younger brother (16) and sister (18) and my mum. My big sister doesn't celebrate christmas and lives pretty far away, so she usually isn't there. ;/

We have a big breakfast, watch the last episode of the tv advents calender, and then we open the presents around 11 in the morning, which I guess is a little unusual. 🙂 After that we hang out for a couple of hours and my mum and I cook the last of the christmas dinner. When it's time for dinner my dad comes over, he and my mum has been divorced a couple of years and he lives in another country now, but they're still (kinda) friends.

To watch specific tv programs on christmas is a big thing in Sweden, so after dinner we watch Donald duck and friends wishes you a merry chrismas, which is a collection with cartoons with Donald duck, chip and dale and others. It's the same cartoons every year and everyone knows all the lines. 🙂 Then it's time for "Can you whistle, Johanna?", a movie swedish television has shown after donald duck the last couple of years. Many others watch "Christopher's Christmas Mission" that's on the same time which is a christmas movie with kind of a socialist message.

After that we play games, hang out, play video games that my brother and sister has usually gotten and eat lots and lots of more food 🙂

My husband comes from the north of sweden about 180 miles away and rarely get to see his family, so he spends christmas time with them. I usually go travel there a few days after christmas an celebrate new years eve with them and have a mini christmas a little later. But this year I can't efford it. ;(

Anyway, I'm really looking foward to christmas! 😀

We don't really celebrate christmas in my family, we kind of do this light version of Hannukah. Usually it was only me, my two brothers and my parents, because my sister lived I in Israel for many years.
But this year it's going to me, my sister who moved back to Sweden last year, my parents and my oldest brother Jonathan, his wife and their little baby Ebba that was born in April this year, she's so f#cking cute.
My other brother is in Israel, which is a good thing because we always play a lot of boardgames during holidays when the whole family is together and Simon, my brother is the worst bad loser there is!

We light the menorah or whatever every night for 8 days, and we exchange gifts, and my dad starts to sing this song in hebrew every night and so for 8 days of the year we have to tell him to shut up, he really can't sing.

I won't be celebrating anything when I move out from my parents house, I don't want to have to do it now either but since my family does I do to, but we don't really do anything special we mostly just eat lots of food and play board games.

You know, the idea of Christmas in the sweltering heat as always been a real turn off for me but some of my best friends moved to Auckland and they are having a BBQ on the beach. Gotta admit, I'm more than a little jealous.

Have you ever had a "cold" Christmas? Gone somewhere with snow and all that craic?

We pretty much have a busy Christmas, It will be the baby's 3rd christmas and the first christmas we're actually leaving out Milk, Cookies, and Carrots for Santa. We've already got the tree and decorations up. On christmas morning we'll wake up, open gifts and have pancakes, then around 11 my fiancee's dad comes to pick us up (He lives in arkansas and only comes up for christmas) then we drive half an hour or so to some relatives house where there is like 60 people and have brunch. Eggs Benedict, Catfish, breakfast Burritos, Sticky buns, you name it...its there. We open up some gifts there and hang out till around 2:30, we're home around 3. Then we go to my mom's house for a while open gifts there, then later that night go to Jon's uncle's house for a bit then finally back home. Its very tiring but its nice at the same time. I love Christmas

For Christmas, its just me, my mom, and my brother now. We always go to the midnight mass at our church. Despite being really long I enjoy it. Then we open presents in the morning when we wake up. My brother is extremely impatient he'd never be able to wait all day. We've always opened presents first thing in the morning lol.

After we finish opening presents I get to work on cooking the dinner which takes all day. We usually just sit around either watching tv (my mom likes to put on the yule log) or playing with my brothers new video games or watching dvds. Two christmas' ago I got the Angel complete set and I spent all christmas day watching Angel lol.

Then once dinners ready we eat this huge meal, I love making Christmas dinner even if its a lot of work. Pretty traditional dinner: Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatos, yams, cranberry sauce, and some kind of cake or pie or chocolate truffles for desert.
