A month beforehand, usually.
*When do you usually buy the last Christmas present?

*Do you think it’s cheap to give away something home-made or do you prefer home-made gifts?
I love making gifts for people. One year, I made home-made soap and everyone loved it. I think homemade gifts are very thoughtful.
*Would you be happy to get something home-made?
Yes, if it was something I'd use like soap or something.
*Do you generally value an expensive gift more than a less expensive gift?
No, it's the thought that counts.
*Who do you generally give gifts to? A few people or as many as possible?
I buy gifts for immediate family and close friends. Others, I always send cards too.

The interview questions poorly reflect my purpose of this paper, which is two answer these questions:

*What do people like or dislike about giving Christmas presents and shopping for them?

*Why do unwilling givers and shoppers still give and shop?


I will give you a summarization of my results and discussion from the paper.

There are two key points:

*The reasons to like or dislike to give presents and to shop.

*Why do the people who dislike to give and shop for Christmas gifts still give and shop?

I mentioned some of the reasons you had given me for liking and/or disliking to give and/or shop, and then came to the question of; Why give?

My theory was; because we're suppose to show our love and gratitude, and as stated in Mumrik's answer; It could be considered mean to not give in case people give to you. Some of us (but certainly not all, as seen in many of your answers where you tell of how you like to both give and shop, without mentioning discomfort over the fact) feel it's mandatory to give gifts at Christmas, whether we actually want to, or not.

I then finished the paper by asking: Is it good for society and its citizens, that we have a tradition to give gifts at a specific time of the year that could be viewed as chance to express our emotions for the receivers for some, but as unnecessary constraint for others?
