I'm watching S2 "What's my line?" and Spike picks up the Cross of Du Lac they stole from the tomb. But how can he touch it, is this ever explained later on or something? I'm watching for the first time so maybe it is, but it doesn't make any sense right now.

Because he's awesome...

But seriously, it's shown pretty consistently throughout the series (I don't want to spoil anything for you, so I won't go into detail) that there are certain aspects of being a vampire where Spike is just...different than other vamps. Crosses, and how they affect him, is one of those areas. He's always been much more resistant to the power of the cross (along with other traditional vampire weaknesses as well).

Might there be a possibility that the cross wasn't blessed?
In one of the episodes the Master had a cross in his lair that burned him when he touched it and I doubt anyone blessed that one since it was in a vampire king's lair.

The masters lair was a church that had been swallowed by an earthquake... so it was a holy cross... however at no point is it ever said that a cross needs to be blessed to work... tbh I didn't even a cross was blessed.

Also I thought Spike used a hanky to get the cross.

Not sure if I forget something... but as far as I know he only picks it up towards the end of part 2 when they are doing that ritual with Dru and Angel.

Pretty sure he's simply wearing gloves to protect himself there.

/SK

I didn't see any gloves or the cloth that others have mentioned, but perhaps I just wasn't watching closely enough.

I know that at the end of the episode he was wearing gloves, did he touch/pick up the cross before that?

Second pic: before dru picks him up and carries him, he's wearing gloves

Yup. He had gloves.

I can only remember two other scenes with Spike and crosses, and they effected him. So what do you mean?

It's been a while since I have seen that episode, but wasn't the Cross of Du Lac supposed to be some sort of evil artifact, despite having the appearance and shape of a holy cross?

(But I may be confusing it with the Black Cross in the movie "Vampires.")

Yup. He had gloves.

This comment also confused me... I never thought spike was any different to any other vampire, other than the fact he seems to have retained the ability to taste food better than other vamps, such as angel.

To my recall he was wearing gloves/using a hanky however you're right - it doesn't make sense... it's just more convenient I guess that he can pick it up without sizzling and burning, I suppose it's because there are no hard and fast rules in vampire mythology, everyone makes it up as they go along but establishing that vampires have a burning reaction to Christian crosses but to later arrange it so that they are protected by whatever flimsy piece of fabric when they wish to pick it up is ridiculous IMO.

So all I can say is take it in stride and try to ignore those little changes of convenience, it just makes for simpler story telling I would say.

And personally I don't remember Spike having any different reactions to crosses than any other vampires through the show...

Yeah it is kind of silly, but nothing beats Willow killing a vampire by stabbing it in the back with a pencil. There is no way it could go deep enough to reach the heart. That one really stretched my suspension of disbelief.
