I know this was a few years ago now, but I really think this would have been great. At the end of the penultimate episode when Spike sees Angel and Buffy kissing passionately, and it cuts to the first taunting him I really thought we were going to get a return of bad ass angry Spike and a big old fight between Buffy/Angel against Spike. Would have been awesome. Was pretty disappointed when they didnt utilise Angel more in the finale, even though his scene was pretty poignant and well done. Any other thoughts?

Maybe that would have looked cool, but to see Spike so angry, yet dealing with his disapointment and basically letting go off it was nice to see. Character development.

Unless, of course, he was so used to being used and to have women choose his grandsire over him that he didn't bother getting that angry. Then it was a sad ep.

First off, bad ass Spike wouldn't have had to "return" from anywhere. He was already there. Secondly, I'm not that certain that, at that point in time, Buffy would have taken Angel's side against Spike, any more than Angel took Buffy's side against Faith in "Sanctuary." She had already defended him and taken his side against her friends and had even told Robin Wood that she wouldn't stop Spike from killing him if he tried anything else.

Spike isn't the same sort of Jekyll/Hyde character that Angel is. There isn't any catalyst that can turn him evil again like the "moment of true happiness" would do for Angel. He might get angry, but he's always the Champion, and the Champion doesn't betray his friends out of simple jealousy.

Besides which, having Buffy and Angel gang up on Spike would make too many Bangels happy, and that's never a good thing.

I would have hated that. I'll admit, I was expected more when they left that cliffhanger but I knew the writers had written themselves into a corner. Honestly, the Angel cameo in the penultimate episodes was just to pander to the Bangel shippers, and I'm glad he didn't take up anymore screen time--he had his own show. Plus, he was so damn chipper even after AtS S4 and all its angst that he was desperately OOC. Making a Spike versus Buffy/Angel fight would have ruined seasons of character development and one of the main plotlines of S7, which was resolving the Spike/Buffy stuff.

Well Spike isnt the champion. Lyndsay just told him he was to mess with his head and help further mess with Angel. Had Spike attacked Angel, she would definately have taken Angels side at that moment in time......as she was kissing him I imagine....that tends to show ones allegiance I feel....

Actually, Buffy named Spike as her Champion well before he ever met Lindsey. Granted, it wasn't until after she sent Angel away that she dd that, but I think that she saw him that way well before that particular episode. And, as for whose side she would take, she had already taken Spike's side against the objections and/or disapproval of everyone in her household except maybe Faith and Andrew, and had gone so far as to close the door in Giles' face when he tried to make excuses for what he and Wood had tried to do and failed.

I'm not trying to start up the old "Does Buffy love Angel or Spike the most here," I'm simply stating that Spike was a member of Buffy's team, was, by her own assessment, "the only one watching her back," and, as had been shown several times during that season, she considered him under her protection to the point that she took his side against all of the objections of all of the people who she should have trusted and depended on the most. In this instance, under those circumstances, I can't see her siding with Angel any more than Angel sided with her against Faith. It has nothing whatsoever to do with who loved who the most, who was kissing who, who just popped in for a quickie, or who had done the unthinkable by actually fighting for and winning his soul back.

At that time, Spike was a part of Buffy's team, and Angel was not. That says it all. If a fight had started between Angel and Spike, regardless of who started it, she would have broken it up, without actually siding with either man, and she would still have done exactly what she did, which is send Angel back to LA where he had come from, out of simple logic. She needed troops who would fight the First Evil, not each other.

Once again, I AM NOT DEBATING WHETHER BUFFY LOVED ANGEL OR SPIKE THE MOST. Spike was a member of Buffy's team, and her first responsibility, as the leader, is to her team, not her boyfriend, whichever vampire that might have been. Spike stood up for her against everyone in Buffy's house when they betrayed her, no questions asked, and no hesitation, and gave her courage, support, and comfort during her darkest hours. I can't see her repaying his loyalty by doing anything less for him.
