Vampires are depicted in the Buffyverse as having the equivalent intelligence of their human hosts, added with the gift of immortality, allowing for years, if not decades or even centuries, of study in whatever fields or subjects that might interest them. So why, in the entire combined 12 Seasons on TV, plus two more in the comics, have neither Buffy nor any of her friends and allies encountered one single vampire with the common sense to wear some sort of chest armor? At least 90% of all the vampires slain in the Buffyverse are staked, so you would think that at least one would figure out that primary vulnerability and try to eliminate it.

Very good point
Hahaha yes too true. I guess I just figured they never saw humans as a threat, perhaps a bit egotistical thinking a little slayer couldnt destroy them.

Buffy kind of has that superhero comic book unrealisticness about it where they get these things, the writers are smart, but they realize that the story is above that. Sure there are inconsistencies in vampire personalities and strength and many other things, but the show is about so much more than that and I think joss and the writers embraced that the viewers would get that. For example a random vampire has no personality depth and is stuck in vampire face. One that matters can switch faces and have a story and personality that represents it's human personality. This is obviously inconsistent but just needs to be accepted. Remember this was the 90's so things were a little different

I agree in principal but when would the vampire wear this armour? They're trying to hunt inconspicuously and tend to be able to kill most of the things they stalk. Also they wouldn't really consider any human a threat (even a vampire hunter- I think Holtz was a rareity) , so why would they wear any protection.

I mean, if they knew there was a slayer in the area, most vamps would probably just leave town, run away, right? So, thats a logic fail for the show right there.
Actually, if a slayer was in the area, why wouldn't a vampire go and buy a gun? We know that slayers aren't immune...she pulls out a stake, and he blows her away!

So, I guess like any show there are logic fails. Just go with it, maybe all vamps are just too traditional!

But they did. The three in "Angel" wear armor - pauldrons and chainmails.

I was referring more to something worn under regular clothing, like the police "Second Chance" models, almost identical to a regular tee shirt

You're right. I must've slept through that one. Still, you'd think that it would be a fairly common precaution for vampires to take. Just three in of one episode...

I think the bigger inconsistency is why, once it becomes clear after about S2 that Buffy really is a legitimate threat who is pretty skilled at what she does, do so many vampires choose to remain in Sunnydale?

I don't think so. Vampires have to blend in into human society, armor only attracts attention. Also, there's no reason to wear it. Vampires have nothing to fear, they don't need it against humans. Slayer? Well, there's only one slayer in all the world and anyway, most vampires don't stand a chance against her, armor or not. Can't stake? Decapitate! The three wear armor because they are warriors and they know what they will be fighting against, they get a chance to prepare. Most vampires do not.

I was referring to something along these lines:

These have been worn underneath regular clothing, practically invisible, by police officers, both on and off duty, for years. Granted, the Kevlar material that these vests are made of is BULLET resistant, but the principal remains the same.

I'm guessing that like anything else, vampires get accustomed to not being in danger and become a bit careless. Even if they were to wear something like that, I'm sure that any vampire would get tired of wearing it after a few months, especially when they can live forever.

It's like, why do some people not wear a seatbelt? Why do people not wear a helmet when riding a bike, or a four-wheeler? Why do we not walk around surrounded by giant bubble wrap? Vampires have a few known weaknesses, but when there's only a handful of people out there that can kill you, your chance of survival is much better than most humans, and god knows were just as clueless about vampires when it comes to our health.

Probably the same no sense reason those vests aren't entire body suits.

The vests protect the vital body parts on humans, and should serve the same function with vampires. They are light weight and unobtrusive, completely unnoticeable beneath clothing.

Every vampire (in the buffyverse) thinks they are unbeatable. They all think they are the one who can beat Buffy. Remember when Sunday says she is going to kill Buffy, Buffy replies "That threat gets more terrifying every time I hear it".

It doesn't matter how many vampires Buffy kills or has killed, each one individually thinks it won't happen to them. I guess their ego is their flaw.

I always figured that demons and vampires were drawn to the hellmouth in the same way that certain animals, like trout, are drawn by some mystical energy radiating from the hellmouth, in order to do the demon equivalent of spawning. That would explain why Sunnydale is practically crawling with demons, and its cemeteries are so full of rising vampires.

My understanding is that was the initial reason for the creation of the hellmouth. They needed a reason new monsters are showing up every week in this sleepy suburban town. With Angel LA is a big city of millions and his crew is actively going all over the place looking for such things.

Might also explain why it seems that nearly everybody in Sunnydale who gets killed by a vamp comes back as one while over on Angel sireing is the exception rather than the rule.

I always thought the vampires didn't think they needed any added protection (such as armor) if they were hunting ordinary people.

White Avenger stole my answer. It was said more than once that the Hellmouth attracts vampires & other demons.

Yes. Darla says that what they once were informs what they are, but they still are evil creatures without souls. Full of themselves and their power. And not all of them are intelligent to begin with! Some of them are little more than animals, living to feed.

Right. Humans often feel that "it isn't going to happen to me". I think this feeling of invulnerability must be even more enhanced in vampires. They're kind of like teenagers that way! 🙂 Which is of course, the point of the show.
