How Dated is Season 1?

I think this thread is hilarious. Saying season 1 of BTVS is dated is like saying Gone with the Wind or Casablanca are dated. Its not like they can put different hair and clothes on them after its shot to keep it up to date. I understand what ya'll are getting at, I absolutely agree that they are dated, but I don't think its a bad thing at all. Its classic, and classic is cool. Now, if you were to say 'outdated' I might take a wee bit of offense to that. 😉

Yes, I was wondering if the show and particularly Season 1 looked dated by now. I don't really know, I imagine we have some members of the current high school and college age demographic in this community, what do you guys think?

One thing I noticed was that no one in Sunnydale High School, well the old one anyway, ever used a cell phone. These days they are ubiquitous, and a lot of kids had them by the late nineties. We live in the age of instant messaging. I also remember in "I Robot You Jane" where either Willow or Jenny talks about how the demon is going to get out everywhere over the computer modems. Hmmm, not a lot of bandwidth there-he sure could have used a broadband connection. The scanner Willow used in that episode, that's another story. I've never seen a scanner like that, don't actually know if such devices really existed, and I work around computers quite a bit.

But yes, I'll add my nod of assent to Anita Blake. Even if the settings may look "dated" the ideas and themes of Buffy are timeless!

In, 1996-1999, when they were in high school, only really really rich kids had cell phones. They weren't something everyone had like today. Heck, when I was in high school, just a couple of years ago, not even half the students had cell phones. But of course the show is dated, even if it was a few years ago, but it is true to that time period. You don't watch the Breakfast Club, and wonder why they aren't using cell phones. 🙄

Plus, they did use cell phones. In season 7, Xander, Buffy, and Dawn all had them.

Yes, by Season 7 (2002-2003) they were using cell phones. That was six years after the show went into production. They were in use on Angel before then.

About Cordelia's cell phone-she would have one if anyone did, though the model looks kind of dated. 😉

It's not as though Sunnydale High School was supposed to be realistic-it isn't. But if you compare it to what the school in the series Veronica Mars, looks like, it's clear that things have changed since the late '90s. Instant messaging, MP3s, pictures over cameraphones, the mass of stuff on the Internet. Just the computers-in Season 1 of BtVS-pretty much desktops with big clunky monitors. Yes, a lot of them are still in use in schools, it's not like schools have money to bring in the latest technology. But notebook/laptop computers are everywhere now. Back in the '90s they were still high priced prestige items. If they were to show the Espresso Pump today I imagine it could well be a WiFi hotspot, LOL!

These really are just superficial changes, I suppose that the students of today could still imagine themselves being students of Sunnydale High School.

It's going to be crazy for me to say this, but.........I still like the clothes from Season 1. How Buffy rocked the knee high boots. I know it is dated, but I'm a major dork. But I wouldn't walk out of the house wearing what they have on.

i thought buffy looked so much better in seasons 1 and 2 compared to anything after season 4.

but yeah the effects didn't age well

the bit i find the most annoying is listening to the vampires speak.

i love season 1, its classic cant beat it, programs evolve after afew years there has to be room for improvement. ( speaking of evolve) take it you like pokemon himonlee? i liked pikachu and cahrmander, well blastoise too. so is hitmonlee your fave?

lol...not dated. I mean, that was...wow..a decade ago. I agree with most people here. You can't say a show is dated because things are different now then when it was then. Heck, you cant say The Brady Bunch or I Love Lucy or even Bewitched is dated. That's the style when it was filmed. You can't hop into a time machine and go back to 1996 when they were filming and say "In 2006, this will all be dated, try wearing these."

🙂 nice one, you can beet the classics, come on when were anchient everying in our time will be totaly "dated" look what can be done today so who knows what can be done in future.

ah yeah i like them but from the tv not the games. hitmonlee was a name i registered years ago though 🙂 and no hitmonlee isn't my favourite, i just like the name. i love hitmonchan, squirtle, also charmander, marowak, snorlax, um heaps of them! but my favourite is jigglypuff

Classics are classics, yes. The only point I would make is that settings of a show inevitably bear some marks of the time in which the show was created (for Buffy's Sunnydale High, that would be mid to late 90s). That doesn't make the plots or the themes of the BtVS "dated".

How can a classic be dated? 😉

perhaps season 1 is less "classic" than the other seasons, as it is dated. the other seasons don't seem so dated.

to me "dated" refers to something not being timeless. the first season is not timeless as there are lots of points where you go "omg look at that, how odd/weird did that look/sound"

its like how some songs are really good at the time, and you hear them a few years later and they don't sound as good as they did back then.

season 1 doesn't look as good as it did at the time, but the others seasons you don't really get this feeling.

IMO 🙂

Well what we wear now will probably be dated in 2016...of course its dated thats gonna happen...it doesn't make me enjoy the season any less! Although someone should have realized even back then that skin tight stretch pants were sooo not cool...

its not just the clothes - the special effects look terrible now.
whereas i watch something like star wars and it still looks pretty good today
