How did Angel buy the office in season 1?

It's not mentioned, but I always assumed he rented it. Most people don't initially buy the location their new business is centered in. As to how he got the money, good question. I always kind of assumed that he had a good amount of money saved up somewhere over the decades and centuries. I highly doubt he ever had a legitimate paying job before he became a private detective, but I'm sure he took his share of plunder when he was soulless.

Either that or Whistler set him up with some money after he moved to Sunnydale. He had a pretty nice little apartment there as well, and immediately before moving there he was living off rats in an alleyway (although it could be viewed that he did that as a form of self punishment and exile).

Maybe whistler introduced him into the dazzling world of stocks and shares? Whistler put some money on a few things about to become big in the 90s, such as Microsoft and then he sold his shares and lived off the results?

Or more likely: He beat up some guys stealing some priceless artifact and got a reward for returning it?

In "I Fall to Pieces" Angel 1x04, Melissa pays Angel Investigations for its service is stopping the evil Dr. Ronald Meltzer from spying on her. Maybe it was a very good payday.

Maybe billionaire David Nabbit from "First Impressions" Angel 2x03 gave him enough money as well as advice to set him up for the hotel purchase, but that was in Season 2.

The office was rented, because I can remember Cordy complaining a couple of times about the free clients not helping to pay the rent. On the other hand, he did buy the Hyperion a couple of seasons later, so he had a source of money from somewhere. And no, I'm not forgetting the valise fll of cash that he found in the basement. There might have been enough money in there to buy a house, assuming that the silver certificates were still legal tender after all that time, but a hotel, even a long abandoned one like that, would require a down payment ranging in the high six figures, even before the required renovations and utility hook ups were made.

Maybe Angel found out about the treasure chamber in Sunnydale, where Spike found the the Ring of Amara, and took some things from there.

I always assumed that even though he didn't have a lot of money stored up (suggested in Cordy's words Mr. "I was alive for 200 years and never developed an investment portfolio) he did have some money stored up through the years.

It's a Whedon show. Who expects a logical explanation. If it fits the story they add it. Sunnydale having a harbor while being in the desert? Just keep the theories coming. 😀

With the hotel didn't he ask David Nabbitt for help in getting it for free? With reference to Cordy's rent comment I thought she meant her own rent, as in she wasn't getting paid?
