i was rewatching my buffy collection today and something dawned on me how did buffy actually stop the first because the last thing we saw of the first was buffy telling it to get out of her face and yeah the hellmouth was destroyed but what i don't gget is how buffy acually defeated the first can someone help me pPpppplllllleeeeaaassseeeee

Well from what always understood Buffy never actually defeated the First, the First evil can't defeated, it can't be killed, its not mortal, its not even corporeal.. its more of just an ideal.... this big thing that will always be around no matter what. What Buffy defeated was the army (ubervamps and Caleb) that the First had behind it acting on its behalf to bring Buffy down... when Buffy defeated them and the First's plan was squashed I think its kinda like a defeat but not in the physical sense... the First once again went dormant... for now... to think up a bigger and better plan 🙂

I totally a agree its like before the old ones, before Glory its part of the world, it would unbalance the verse in some way.

But if the First Evil existed in the ether before our reality was born as indicated, perhaps connected to many universes, its not just ours that gives it a balance.

I know it needs as much evil as possible possibly to create some E=mc^2 event where that energy becomes mass and therefore allows it to become corporeal as it indicated in the finale, but Earth would just be one planet out of thousands it might be terrorising.

Seriously if its older than our reality its over 13,000 billion years old, I think it can wait another few years, or eons to do something else. It just spotted an opportunity and took it randomly.

Being non-corporeal, the First Evil couldn't harm anybody directly... as Buffy told it in "Chosen," all it could do was appear as dead people and taunt.

After the events of "Chosen," it didn't have very many openings left in the taunt department.

But I'm sure we haven't heard the last of it.

Basically, you have to see the First as a ghost, you can't kill a ghost. You can't lock it away. Sometimes it gets angry and does nasty things like trying to overtake the world and things like that. Most of the times it's just hiding away. When Buffy destroyed all his tools (übervamps, and other stuff hanging about in the hellmouth), he couldn't do much. So he just hid himself again and now he's somewhere waiting for a new opportunity. Not a very comforting though, but well, Buffy is no Disney ^^

Wouldn't the first be basically part of the cunning plan at the end of Season 5 Angel? I mean, if Buffy killed the First, there would be no more evil in the world and Hollywood and Capitalism dealt with 😉 So nope, the First is alive and killing. Just somewhere else than in Sunnydale.

In "Chosen", the First tells Buffy that once its army has overrun the Earth and the balance tipped towards the Demons, it would become corporeal again, solid again, and relished the idea of finally being able to go on a rampage, implying it had once been able to probably before it shed its original body.

Though one dreads to think how much larger and more powerful a being it could shape itself into with all that power.

I would say The Firsts original body is the one that constantly shows up during S7 and in S3.

But once Buffy defeated all the Ubers, The first was forced back into its little "jail" cell waiting for the next window to open to jump back into this diminesion.

Another thing that I think is really relative to this thread is that all those Ubervamps weren't really under the school. The hellmouth and the seal were under the school but when the slayers went down they were actually stepping into another dimension.

Destroy the ubervamps and Caleb, destroy the hellmouth and then the first cannot use this dimensional portal / hellmouth to bring hell to earth and / or rise up and coporealize.

This is really a variation on themes created by H.P. Lovecraft in some of his sci-fi and Horror stories. The Buffyverse is true to and carries on those themes and traditions of storytelling beautifully.

Took the words right out of my mouth on that one lol. Plus I think all the Potential Slayers being made fully fledged Slayers tipped the scales in Goods favour quite a bit. With all the Slayers in Sunnydale and waking up all around the world had to have pushed The First back quite a bit but I bet it will resurface again at some point in the Buffyverse somehow.
