The Buffy names thread gave me an idea. Were you named after anyone? Why did your parents give you the name you have?

Hehe, we've talked about this in chat recently.
Before my parents knew I was a girl, I was Rupert.
Then I was Helena, then Georgina, until my parents finally settled on "Claire".

My dad has this thing where he doesn't like names that are more than one syllable, because people automatically shorten them.

However he didn't factor in that when you can't shorten a name, people tend to lengthen it instead!

hahah rupert...that's so cute
My Dad chose Linzi after his half sister. It's spelt that way because it's unusual. Before that they wanted to call me Olivia or Marnie. I'm not particularly keen on the last one but it is unique. My parents didn't know what sex I was going to be when I was born so Grant and Sam were chucked into the mix too. Thank god I was a girl.

Olivia is my middle name :)
Mum had a gut feeling I was going to be a boy. One morning my parents were preparing for the day's trade (they ran a pub) and Mum shouted over to Dad "What are you going to name our son?" Dad replied "John David" and they moved on to the next topic of conversation.

My parents named me Amanda because of the fact that it ended with an 'a'. Every girl in my family, on my dad's side that is, has a name that ends with an 'a': Georgina, Barbara, Jessica, and Andrea.

I was named after the mermaid in the 80s film Splash! for some reason. It wasn't my mum's favourite film, she just loved the actress/name. My middle name Joanne was given to me as it's my mum's best friend's name.

Madison! I love that name...I pronounced it as "medicine" when I was 5 haha
My first name came from my father. My grandmother named him Ashley because of the man in Gone With the Wind. My middle name is my Mom's first name.

Yeah...my parents are pretty conceited. LOL

My mom has a very popular name in Quebec, so do her sisters and brothers and so does my father. She wanted me to have a name that wouldn't be used by 10 other girls when I'd be in school. So she named me Jennifer... That was before Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Garner became really popular... And then when I was a kid BAM! Every popular actress/singer had my name and it wasn't such a good idea anymore... And it's not even funny because my last name is Dion (like Celine...) so other kids had real fun in school calling me Jennifer Lopez or Celine Dion... *head meets desk*

But now I think it was destiny because I am a very good dancer and I love to sing. I used to be able to sing like Celine but I kinda lost part of that in 9th grade due to a throat problem. I can still sing though, which I guess makes the "mean" nicknames accurate XD

No special story. My mom let my dad give me my name, because she'd be fine with anything he chooses. So my dad wanted either Dana or Daphne. Ended up picking Daphne.
When I asked my mom once what she would have named me if that was her choice, she said Donna.
I honestly have no idea why my parents like the letter 'D' so much...

I used to really hate my name. Until SMG's movie came out, Scooby Doo, and she played Daphne there, and I've been a fan of SMG. That I thought that was really cool, that Sarah plays a role that has my name. Now I think my name is one of the coolest names out there, it's not common either. And I'm really glad that I wasn't named Dana, which I find kind of boring, or Donna which is very dated IMO.

I looove that name. I'm glad you weren't named Donna haha Daphne is so much better
They named me after my mom's Aunt. At first, they thought I was going be a boy so the name they had picked out was Jacob/Jake. So I probably would have been Jacob if I was a boy.😛

My name was almost Summer...then it was almost Christina...finally my parents settled on Bria. I think my dad did, but I'm not sure why. My middle name, Gwen, is after my aunt, Gwen 😀. I definitely have the best middle name in the family. My poor sisters.

I like this question. A lot.

aw, I love your name! Very different, I haven't heard it before
My father's name was Joe Bradford, and my mother wanted me to have his name, but not be a "junior." Also, several cousins and nephews had already been named after him, so, instead of "Joe," my mother chose the more formal "Joseph," with middle name "Alan." (she used to kid him that I was actually named after Joseph Cotton and Alan Ladd, two particularly handsome movie stars)

It didn't really matter, however, since my grandfather named me "Rip" the first time that he laid eyes on me, and that is the name that I go by to this day, in everything except the more formal occasions where the legal name is required, such as military service.

My name means "life" in Greek. My mom wanted to name me "life" because I was the first child she gave life to. I love my name and name story. It fits me.

My first name was supposed to be Johanna. But my dad screwed it up on the birth certificate. So it's Joann now. But It suits me tho. It means "God is gracious" and then my last name means "River" so idk...I like it 😛

My name Lee, and my bro also has a short name. My mum said she gave us short names so we couldnt have nicknames, which she hates. Which i think is a lame reason for coming up with a name. Wish i was called Denzel.

haha, denzel :D
Meh, my parents went (with both me and my older sis) "oh hmm, what could we name our kids? Yeah let's look up the names of old Swedish Princesses" ... (somewhat ironic seeing as how I'm a strong opposer of the monarchy) and that's how I got stuck with my name. I've never liked it though and probably never will, lol. I thought about changing it but honestly, by now, I just can't be bothered.

Aw, I didn't know that was a princess name! And I think it's pretty! :)
My name day is on my birthday... 🙂
Guess my parents ran out imagination after a bunch of kids so they just took a look at the calender and said - oh well, good enough.

I like that approach, they got my approval.

My parents were sure I was a boy and so they only had a boy's name picked out for me. When a little gal popped out my father left my mother, and so she just chose Natalie because she loved Natalie Wood.

I was named after abigail adams.... my mom had a fascination with her when she was pregnant with me. 🙂
