I was talking with my cousin last night, going over the experience of him watching Buffy for the first time. There were a lot of moments where I would watch him out of the corner of my eye to see his reactions. One of the most dramatic reactions that he had was to The Body. The entire first part of the episode, he was frozen, just staring horrified at the screen. When THAT scene happened and Joyce starts coughing and wakes up, he literally let out a sigh of relief while throwing his hands up in rejoice. Of course I knew what was coming, and in the next moments where they flash quickly to the ambulance and then the hospital I saw the realization dawn across his face, and when they flashed back to Joyce dead again, the look on his face was pure horror. I later told him that if Joss Whedon could have seen that reaction, he would have been very happy.

What I'm wondering is if you or anyone you know had outstanding reactions to this scene in Buffy or any other scene that you can think of.

The body didn't really touch me that much...Well Anya's speech did, cos it was spot on how you feel. Confused, and stunned.
But Normal again touched me. It's so deep. I can't describe it. My tears always begin to flow when Buffy talks to Dawn just when she's about to jump, and save the world(Last episode of season 5 you silly nit.)

But I am such a crybaby. When people cry, I cry. I have lost so much fluid on that cost(this didn't come out like it should have XD)

I love Normal again its my fav ep
Chosen brings out some sort of weird pride in me its like while watching buffy you have been on a journey of many highs and lows you have been there all the way and in chosen you come to the end of that jorney in such a dramatic fashion I feel like i want to fight side by side with them because it feels like i have a part to play because i was there from the start its weird but hay thats me in a nutshell

whole in the world also gets at me a bit espcially when Fred says " I walk with heros" thats a good bit

I don't think this counts...but when i was flicking channels...FX came on...and then i was shouting, "WHAT ON EARTH IS A SNAKE COMING OUT HER MOUTH FOR!!!" lol...that's how i was hooked to buffy lol!!

When i was watching the seasons...i think season 3 when Angel bites Buffy...that was a jaw dropper...i hate that man lol!! Erm...another was when Tara gets shot..i litterally jumped out my seat in fright...then i started crying!

I remember shouting at the tv in season 2...i think...yeah in Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered...and Buffy starts coming on to Xander...I'm like NO NO NO!!! BUFFY STOP!! lol

In an inspirational way....i think Buffy's speach in season 7...when she goes something along the lines of,

"We're not ready? They're not ready! They think we're going to wait for the apocalypse to come..like we always do." You get the just of it lol...yeah that speach gives me shivers...it's so good 😀

Heh, well, I often tried to trick my brother as I introduced him to Buffy.
I was very careful not to give anything away.
He developed a pretty strong crush on Ms. Calendar, so her death was a huge shock to him. He was stunned and horrified when it happened.
Before we watched S3's "Enemies" I said, "Ughh, I HATE this one" (even though I don't). I wanted him to think that Angel had really turned into Angelus again, and he did. His reactions during this episode were good too.

I did the same sort of thing to my cousin while he was watching it for the first time! Mind games are fun! It makes them feel it soooo much more :-)

I (being the cousin) wasn't that fond of the mind games. Sometimes they were CRUEL.
Onoe of the moments of Buffy which shocked me the most was Tara's death. By the time I got around to watching it, I knew she was going to die, I just didn't know HOW she was going to die. When Warren walked into Buffy's garden with the gun, I froze up. Seriously, I must have been sat in the same position for about ten minutes at the least. When I was over that, I started bawling. I was in so much shock.

In 'You're Welcome' I pretty much did that, but with ten times the shock. I'd fallen in love with the episode, and though I knew Cordy died in season five, I didn't know it was in that episode. I'd been saying 'Aww' for almost the full length of the episode, and I was about to go to bed and was groggily watching the last five or ten minutes. As soon as I heard Cordy was dead, I sat bolt up right and sat staring at the TV screen for ages and then I kept repeating 'It's a dream, it's a dream' 🙂p) I ended up going up to bed and crying myself to sleep in mourning of Cordy.

well Tara's seath also definetly shook me uo real good and I gried through the whole episode of the body

Another reaction was one my brother had. At first he really like Buffy and he watch half of s3 and half of s4 then he came the the episode 'where the wild things are' ( I 'm pretty sure it's this one ) and he totally got traumatized by Briley and never watch the show again 🙁 Of course he was really young.

The problem with me was that I only started getting into the show once the advertisements started for season 6. The whole BUFFY LIVES deal. So I knew she would die.. and by that point, knew her mom was dead. So I ignored the show for a while... Till it turned into a big deal with the family. So all of the shocker moments from the first five seasons were missed on me. Although some moments still tug at me. The spirit of The Body is spot on. The whole confusion surrounding death and such.. Very much real. My dad died some weeks ago and it's just like.. mass confusion. It was a couple days before it was like, damn.. sucker's really dead.

I didn't really have a good understanding of death back when I first saw The Body. So it was depressing in the fact that Joyce was gone. But after actually feeling the power of death, The Body has become more difficult to watch.

the body is such a painfully still episode. which is what joss was going for, as he said in the commentary, you live through every single second when you're grieving. a sort of hyper-awareness. and that's exactly how the episode is for me.

the one that had the most profound and deep affect on me was the one in season six where buffy tells spike that she was in heaven. i was blind-sided. and it threw me into a deep depression. these characters had been such a part of my life for 5 years, i truly felt for them. i still do. so when buffy confessed that her friends had ripped her out of heaven, i was extremely hurt.

One of my favourite moments ever was at the end of season three, when all the Sunnydale High students throw off their graduation robes and rise up against the Mayor. Makes me grin like a maniac every time...

'The Body' gutted me.

Having lost a parent, and comparing it to that episode, there's no way to explain how spot on it was. The way it was shot, the lack of music. The hyper-awareness and bright colors, the way every sound sounds like a freight train and how no matter how fast you move, everything is slowed down to the slowest millisecond.

When my dad died, one of the first things I did was lock myself in my room and watch 'The Body' twice in a row. I'm not sure if that's the latent dork in me or the idea that I wanted concrete proof of what I was feeling - probably a bit of both, now that I look back on it. But during the inital airing, I stared in shock. I've never watched another episode of any other show before or since that nailed those kinds of emotions straight on the head.

I didn't get into Buffy until 3 years after the show finished. I first watched Season 1, then 3, then 6 then 7. So by the time I got around to watching Season 5 I knew that Joyce was gonna die and that Buffy was gonna die. These episodes still had a really strong impact on me. I watched every episode right from Season 1 up to Season 7 last year, and I remember after watching 'The Gift' feeling really bad for Buffy. I would be sitting there and I would all of a sudden start thinking 'Poor girl. Dying to save the world for the sake of her sister, even after loosing her mum'. Buffy will always be one of the best thought up characters in the history of television.

I don't think I've ever thought about Buffy's smile at the end of 'Chosen' without smiling myself. Buffy did so well at her her job for 7 years, as well as keeping us entertained.

The Body is an amazing episode, but I knew that Joyce was going to die, I wish I had ruined important events in the series by my impatience!!

I agree with theatrebrat - that bit in Graduation Day Pt II when the vamps say 'get the kids' and they're ready for them - awesome!

The episode that gutted me the most is (I know its Angel) but I Will Remember You. Makes me sob my heart out. Every time.

Last night, I re-watched The Body for the first time in a long while. It was always a very moving episode for me, but in the past I did not really have a strong connection to it because I had never had to deal someone I knew closely dying before. A few months, I lost a family member and upon seeing the episode there was all those feelings that came flooding back and it had a different kind of resonance.

Its a great episode, Joss's direction was just brilliant, with the absence of music, the two shots that were slightly off like when Buffy is talking with the paramedic, the color sensitivity, each act starting with Joyce, so many others.

Some people might have picked up on my not-exactly-love feelings towards Joyce, so it won't be a surprise that I was actually sort of waiting for her to die. Yes, I knew she was going to, because I watched s6 and s7 before everything else. Still, despite me being glad that Joyce was gone, it was a shocking and beautiful episode.
In that respect, the death of Tara or Jenny was more shocking. Tara's death was totally unexpected for me, because it was one of the first episodes I watched. She wasn't one of my favourite characters, but Willows grieving (and everyone else's for that matter) was just so painful to watch. The same with Jenny, I really liked her, and I knew she was going to die, but not when and how. So when Angelus appeared I was already thinking 'oh noes, not now!'.
