I was very confused re-watching season seven of Buffy, just wondering, how did The First take on the form of Buffy? I mean, if it can only take the form of dead people, I mean, I realise she was dead at one point- well two actually- , but she wasn't at the time, so how did that work?
 
I always took it as the same thing as Spike being able to hurt her, even with the chip, after she was brought back. I guess you could also look at it as Buffy still being 'dead'. I mean she was raised from the dead, maybe she is some sort of undead. I don't know... good question.
 
Oh, well, that's a theory. I also know that Joss said it was mostly because of the budget, but it also would have had to work somehow.
 
I think it's pretty much because she was dead. And I mean dead dead, not just drowned briefly. She was a (icky) corpse. The First takes the form of vampires all the time. I realize that they're undead, but notice that the First looks like they do now, not before they were killed, which would make sense if it needed the soul to replicate or something (which would mean that looking like Buffy wouldn't make a lot of sense).

I don't think I'm saying this quite right. Here's an example: when the First is Drusilla, it's Drusilla as she is as a vampire, not as she was before she was turned. Drusilla the vampire is still walking around, but her soul is gone. Her soul is the dead part. If the First needed the dead person's soul to, like, photocopy, it wouldn't make sense for it to look like Drusilla-the-vampire because that's not how the soul would look. And if that were the case, since Buffy's soul was returned, the First wouldn't be able to look like her.

I think it's just a writer-imposed limitation to keep things from getting too confusing and giving the First an even bigger unfair advantage (like it not being corporeal).

And I think the First got off on the irony of looking like the Slayer when it was trying to wipe out the Slayer line.

I agree with B B. Plus the part about Buffy's "slight molecular level difference," the thing that allowed Spike to hit her, allowed the First to impersonate her in her present form and not in her dead form, even though she was alive at the time of said impersonation.
 
The first had to be as the person appeared at the time.
If the First was to appear as the person when they died or before death, how would they have done Buffy. She looked and dressed differently season 1 to season 7
 
It also takes the form of Spike, who's also up and about. I think that the person doesn't have to be currently dead. They just need to have died.
 
Well, yeah, but I get that bit, Spike is living dead - along with Dru who it also takes the form of - so that's a whole different scenario really.
