How do the watchers know where the slayers are?

Just had a totally random thought that has been bugging me all day. Sorry if it has been discussed before, I looked in the FAQ of the buffyverse post and could not find it. I know how the slayer line works and such. I'm just wondering, was it ever explained how the watcher council knows who the potential slayers are? Also when Buffy was first chosen and she was not a potential, how did they know that she, out of the millions and millions of other girls in the world, was the slayer?
I guess they could have done a spell or something...anyways I'm just wondering if it was ever explained on the show and I just missed it.
 
Probably through some kind of variant of the original spell that the Shadow Men used to create the First Slayer and assure that she would be succeeded through the ages by other girls. Whatever the method is, it can't be perfect, because they had no Watcher assigned to Buffy until she was actually Called.
 
Willow did a spell in Potential and a glowing thinghie hit Amanda. Didn't she also had a map? The CW probably did the same thing, watchers/witches in different parts of the world.

I always assumed they did some sort of powerful locator spell. And remember, Willow said there was a powerful seer in the Coven who could also tell the approximity of some of them.
 
I imagine that they employ all sorts of magical beings to aid them. I wouldn't be surprised if they had at least one seer who had the sole job of locating potential slayers. Granted that whoever they had locating slayers, thankfully they must have really had something against looking very hard at California because good lord were they late in finding Buffy. Imagine a very proper and disciplined Buffy combating evil...booorrrriiiinngggg.
 
i had also been wondering about it but i guessed the Watchers they would perform some kind of spell!

it was good they didn't find Buffy as a Potential cause she grew to be the best ever!!!she didn't need strict discipline to do it!
 
Yah, some sort of locating type spell for slayers or humans with some sort of other worldly powers would be my guess.
