How do we pronounce our ship name?

I was shocked (shocked) to learn that there's even a question about this! I pronounce it rhyming with Angel.

Well, actually I pronounce it Bee-Ay, but that would just complicate matters further, so forget I said it.

:hehe:
Well, I always said it with a hard G, sort of like "Bagel" but with an "n". So I guess I'm in the Bangle Bangel crowd. 🙂

I don't understand the Bangle thing though. How does that make any sense? I mean, to each their own...I just don't get it.

Perhaps it some sort of quick recognition thing? You know seeing a "new" word a matching it to the one that you know that most resembles it?

I don't think I ever consciously chose to say it Bangle rather Angel with a B on it, it was just the sound my brain decided to place on it.

Or, you know, we all just misread it. 😱

Pahahaha! We have formed a sub-group of our own fandom :hihi:

I guess so! :D
Spuffy here, and I pronounce it 'bangle', at least in my head. (And then I add a little mental cough of disgust, but that's beside the point 😛)

Pronouncing it like Angel with a 'B' just sounds odd to me... like banjo. Baaaanjjel.

I also just say Bangel, like Angel but with a B in front of it. 😀

With some people I have talked to they say it the same way.

Hmm. I figured since it was a combination of Buffy and Angel to pronounce it like Bayn-juhl.

I never really thought people pronounced it differently, honestly.

Oh, and I can't find anything of any Whedonverse people saying it.

I wonder, are the creators/producers of the show even an authority on this particular matter? After all, these amalgamated names are fan created, not handed down to us.

I'd be very surprised to hear someone who was part of the creative team of the show call them anything but "Buffy and Angel".

Good point.
I never say Bangel. I think it sounds stupid no matter how you pronounce it, and I'm not fond of combo ship names in general (I think "Fourteen" from House is the only one I've ever liked, and I only liked it because it's an amusing pun and they actually said it in canon). I always just say Buffy/Angel. And I think Spuffy sounds even worse than Bangel, but since I loathe the Spuffy 'ship anyway, it's kind of fun to refer to it using a name that sounds ridiculous to me. Also, the only reason my little tagline thing by my icon says Bangel is that there wasn't room for Buffy/Angel. Which vexes me.

Two things, I always wanna type "Spiffy" instead of "Spuffy", but I hate them too, and I love that you use a form of the word 'vex'. :D

Nobody will ever believe this, but I actually use the word "Spuffy" out of respect. It's not their fault that the acronym alternative is B/S.
I think it should be Angel, but with a B...but I say Bangel--as in the way you pronounce a bangle bracelet. And spuffy sounds like stuffy.. but with a p in there 😀

Before reading this thread, to pronounce Bangel like 'Angel with a B' never occurred to me. So to keep pronouncing it like 'bangle' as I always have, I will henceforth start pronouncing 'Angel' as 'Angle'.

Well, that's a new angle.

No, it;s probably not a thing they would have created. BUT it would be interesting to see the ones that are cool about fandom, and actually respect fandom, to see what they would say.

I mean, I kind of think the "Bangle" is totally a fandom construct, so it neednt be "B-Angel." It's kind of...funny...or a play on it...than it's a completely made up word. But it would be interesting to me to see if anyone "in authority" has every commented on it and said it a certain way.

My 10th grade Englsh teacher said that pronouncing words incorrectly is a sign of someone who is well read, because they've READ the word rather than HEARD it.

I mispronounce words all the time, just for that reason. That's interesting.

I had not heard anyone say Bangel when I first found out what a ship name was, I just but a B in front of Angel because that seemed logical to me.

I say Bang-el when I speak with Russian fans (because in Russian Angel is pronounced "ang - el").
I mentally say "Bay-njel" in English (not that I have somebody to talk about it in English) 🙂

Yes, that's what I'm saying, it's interesting to see how people pronounce something they've not heard others pronounce. 🙂
