How do you feel about actors having other singers sing for them?

Now I'm going to get somewhere with the title k? In Xena Warrior Princess' season 3 Musical: The Bitter Suite; New Zealand broadway singer, Susan Wood dubbed for Renee O' Connor in the singing in a couple numbers in the musical.

What are your personal thoughts on Ms./Mrs. Susan Wood dubbing for Renee O' Connor in The Bitter Suite? Do you think it was sort of a "rip off" for the fans because of Renee not wanting to sing? Or was it better as it is?

I personally have mixed feelings about it. I love Susan's voice and she sounds a lot like Renee if Renee were to have sing in the musical but I think Renee should have at least tried to record her versions of the songs Susan did as Gabrielle

Doesn't bother me in the least. It's always interesting when actors singing really are them, but I don't expect it.

I mean, the vast majority of actors don't perform their own stunts, so I kind of equate singing to that.

Not everyone is a singer and signing on to be an actor/actress for a role doesn't necessarily mean that (unless stipulated at the signing of the contract) you're able or willing to sing for the character. It will require more work which many might be okay with, if they can sing... if you can't well then... someone doing it for you seems fair enough. Just because your character can sing doesn't mean you can 😉

(Obviously if you audition for something like Glee you have to be prepared to perform but something like Buffy or Xena... I think it's very understandable to refuse/get someone else to do it.)

I haven't seen that musical ep in particular, but generally, unless it's falsely promoted, it's ok. I mean, it's the character that's suppose to be singing, it's not actually suppose to be about the actor. It's like a stunt singer actor 🙂

But I don't think for example OMWF or Glee would be quite as awesome if they had used other people's voices. I guess it's like when actors do their own stunts. It adds something. Unless the actor's voice or stunts suck, then it's quite the oppsit. Of course, part of what made OMWF so great was that the voices weren't perfect, which made it more realistic than if all the scoobies sounded like they should do it professionally.

SMG said that she was going to have someone sing for her for OMWF but once she read the script and saw how emotional the lines/lyrics were she knew she couldn't let anyone else play her character. I don't think OMWF would have been half as effective if it hadn't been SMG preforming those songs. So for me, if the actor can preform, I will always prefer that.

Completely agree. If an actor isn't able to sing then I think it depends on the content of the show. Willow is not exactly a grand singer but it fit the episode well. Angel performing "Mandy" is hysterical. Unrelated but I had to mention it cause it makes me giggle.

Well in the case of "Once More With Feeling", I was sooo happy that the actors did their own singing. It makes me see it as more realistic, even if they actor or actress can't sing well. 🙂

I've never really been strictly opposed to actors lip syncing while others perform their part, unless the dubbing is so bad that you can obviously tell someone is not really singing.

But seriously, he did have the best voice. Not the one I prefered the most(Marsters'), but the best. I didn't think dislike any voices though, but that coukd be because I was simply so happy that my favorite show made a musical ep so I wasn't objective when watching. Now I don't like the ep due to me thinking about the rapeyness of the events in it, and Xander's OOC moments in the end, so maybe I would be more objective. So sad how my favorite ep turned into one of my least favorite ones.

I have no objections as long as the voice is reasonably close to the actor's own. When they are totally mismatched, it's awful.

They were all miming on set, that is how the episode was shot. Their singing was recorded in a recording studio.
And Old Master 3.0 was correct, if none of them sucked in air while they were singing, there wouldn't be a third line of the first verse from any of them.
Watch the episode closely, watch when a person is singing, watch how deeply they suck in air.

It would have been extremely impressive had SMG been able to sing well enough for the final version while doing all the physical stuff she did in "Going Through the Motions," for instance. I don't know if even a trained opera singer could do something like that.

Well guys every musical that I know of is done like that. Songs are recorded on studio and then actors mime them, just like in music video clips.

I'm ok with other actors singing since, in most cases, they didn't sign up for a musical.
