How do you rate SMG as an actress?

As Buffy I think she was amazing but I can't get past that. I mean I compare every role I have seen her in to that of Buffy and she falls short for me, which saddens me as I really tried with Ringer but just could not connect.
 
Personally, I think she's underrated because she is so well known as Buffy that people are rarely unable to see past that association. But I do think she's good; she may be instantly recognisable and there are certain pieces of body language that are always there (but that's because that's Sarah's habits in the way that everyone stands a certain way no matter way etc) but I never find myself thinking of Buffy when she plays a new character. I believe in the new persona. Like in ringer I never once thought 'oh it's Buffy' or 'it's like Buffy there'; I believed in Bridget and Siobhan. It's kinda like you always know it's Maggie Smith but I never see her as Muriel in Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and think oh that's Violet from Downton. For the duration of the film I forget she plays the dowager.
Did that all make sense?
 
I actually really like her in The Return as well. I hated the movie the first couple of times I watched it because I didn't completely understand it but now that I really understand what the movie was trying to say, I love it. I think it's an interesting mix of horror & love story, something that's really never done so I can see why she chose to be a part of it.
 
Sarah's sad face is utterly terrible... meaning that it's so normal as a person who breaks down, it just makes me tear up whenever I see it. Her face goes into all sad puppy dog mode, it's totally heart wrenching for me. I love that she's not a beautiful crier... if you can still look glamorous while crying, you're not sad enough! 😉

I oddly love her ditzy roles as well... though I suppose those will be few and far between now. I suppose the only things I have not really enjoyed watching her in are the Scooby Doo flicks, but that's because they're Scooby Doo. And I did have trouble with Ringer, because it was all a little too far fetched for my braincells so I didn't feel I could connect with anything going on.
